BEER INFO

Style: English Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 13.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
We are a family-owned microbrewery founded in 2009 to brew small-batch artisan beers made with the best local ingredients we can find. Located in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, we turn wine into beer, dream into Haiku, yodel in Esperanto and drink more Underberg than the Brouwer's Matts. To celebrate the 7th Anniversary of the Iconic Fremont Beer Haven, Brouwer's, we brewed this monster English Barleywine with floor-malted Maris Otter barley and Noble hops. Half was aged in bourbon barrels for 6 months, blended back together, bottled, and then we waited... and waited... for 16 months... through both the 7th and 8th Anniversaries. Now it is ready. Of course, please age this beer, but do try it today, and keep in mind, Brouwer's is not your typical beer mecca and this is not your typical American Barleywine.

This one pours a murky reddish brown, with no head and a little lacing.

Smells just slightly oxidized, with fudge, caramel, toffee and toasty barrel.

This tastes similar, with old barrel, oxidation, oak, toffee, caramel, toffee, and fudge.

This is medium bodied, low carbonation, with a good level of drinkability- very surprising.

Fremont basically only does BA beers well. This is excellent even with 4+ years in the bottle.

Bottle....some nice elements, namely dark fruits through the middle and tempered barrel with appropriate heat, but the front end is lacking and likely I missed out on this beer at its best. That's too bad, as this was a big want and I sat on it too long. Still solid, but not what I believe it likely was...

Enjoyed from a barrage tulip snifter.

a - brew pours a deep chestnut brown with a cream colored fizzy head that didn't hang around but could be rebuilt. Slippery spotty lace.

s - nose is incredible. Leads with a sweet liquid caramel glazed with some woody bourbon heat.

t/m/o - like all great BA barleys the most notable thing about this one is the body. Silky smooth, rich in flavor but not too heavy. Liquid caramel and toffee with giant oak notes and a glazing of bourbon...raw bourbon, like backwoods bastard. Really nice, really drinkable. ISO more of this! Top tier!

A - Muddy, ruddy brown.

S - Slightly weak nose.

T - Sweet and syrupy with fairly mild bourbon influence. Toffee with quite a hoppy aftertaste.

M - Thick and syrupy.

O - For an English-style barleywine, I found the hop presence was too strong and had this beer heading in the direction of an Amerian barleywine. Although not perhaps true to style and fairly straightforward in terms of the flavour profile, it's still a tasty brew.
