Hop Program - Beer IHop Program - Beer I
Notes: Our Hop Program is our way of always trying to move forward especially with new hops and new hop combinations. Never standing still and always trying to make things better are our goals. Beer 1 in our Hop Program is a clean IPA featuring Mosaic, Columbus, Centennial and Nelson Sauvin hops. It was inspired by Sapping Mammoth, our collaboration with Half Acre Beer Company. Thank you to Gabriel and Matt for being great partners.

The appearance was a hazy golden bronzed orange color with a thin white layer of foaminess. No lacing. The smell had started off with some sweet citrus and bitter grapefruit rind. Light sweet onion dankiness strolling in underneath. The flavor copies the smell pretty much the same. Light sweet danky onion and citrus aftertaste. Semi-smooth sweet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent ssessionably low carbonated smooth feel. Overall, great AIPA, definitely would have again!

L - lightly evervescent crystal gold. I can see right through this bad boy. Buoyant fluffy head with surprising sticking power.

S - smell is a hell of a lot danker than it looks. Bready, crackery, light spice. All mosaic. Such an overpowering hop. Mild lemon zest and pine. Some tropical hops and candied nectarines. Pine-sol as the glass empties.

T - strong dank lemony forward flavor. Mosaic dominates once again. Earth, grass, honey, candied apricots. Nelson hops shine through to impart a mature vinous character. A drying grapefruit pith on the finish.

F - viscous and creamy. Maine typically has that light, airy, refreshing feel, but this is smooth and full. Other breweries do it better, but it's nice to see MBC give it shot and complements the beer nicely.

O - Maine claims this to be clean, but it's far from that. Dank and sticky. Not what I was expecting from MBC, but I quite like it.

Bottle dated June 17, 2016. Poured into Kane tulip glass.

L: 2F head, moderate retention, leaves a lot of lacing and a ring. Beer is a pale gold and you can see carbonation bubbles.

S: Orange, pineapple, crystal malt, and a lot of pine on the back end.

T: Light citrus and herbal/pine, some malt on the back end to neutralize bitterness. Perfectly OK.

F: Light to medium body, light carbonation, good construction and balance.

O: Complex hop combination doesn't really pop out at you the way you might expect and even Maine beers, which I have noted seem to fade quicker than most, should be OK for two weeks. Perfectly decent, though.

Poured into a pint glass on draft at The Local. Pours a vibrant straw yellow, with a one inch fluffy white head that leaves a beautiful ring of lace.

Smell is lemon grass, apricot, honey, pine, biscuit, and grapefruit.

Taste follows, but better really well balanced lemon grass, honey, apricot, and biscuit upfront gives way to pine and grapefruit in slightly dry finish.

Mouthfeel is light and crisp, loads of life, maybe a touch dry, and excellent drinkability.

Overall this is a very nice beer, goes down very fast, especially on the hottest day of the year so far.

Appearance: pours a golden yellow color with a nice head, and some moderate lace developed during the session.

Smell: lemon zest and some pine tones come through.

Taste: caramel, lemon zest, green grapes, some earthiness, pine, and a nice bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp to start, less crisp and dry at the finish.

Overall: a well balanced IPA that is satisfying.

On tap at the Beer Belly in Albany, NY.

This one pours a very light yellow, with a small head or no lacing.

Smells like soft peach, a little bit of grape, grassy hops, and pine.

This is very light, but super drinkable with a nice crisp bite on the finish. The Nelson shines, with some nice peach and grape, and some definite grapefruit, with light crisp grassy notes.

This is very light bodied, but not watery, with a nice crispness, and a very high level of drinkability.

This is definitely a cool little beer.

Appearance is hazy dark yellow with a sticky bright white head that leaves sheets of lacing.
Smells of white grapefruit, orange peel, lemon zest, white peach, white grape, crackers, and clover.
Tastes of big white grapefruit juice, orange zest, lemon peel, cracker malt, a dab of honey, white peach, and white grape. Finishes with soft pine, lingering grapefruit and orange peel.
Mouthfeel is medium, smooth in the middle but crisp and dry on the finish.

Another fantastic one from Maine Beer Co! So good!

Had on-tap 03/23/16 at Maine Beer Company in Freeport, Maine

Appearance - The brew is clear and golden yellow, served up with an island of white suds floating atop the surface. Broken sheets make up the lacing.

Smell - Light notes of citrus and a 'catty' character.

Taste - Follows the nose. Crisp, hoppy notes of bright citrus with a hint of pine. Crackery malt sweetness. Mostly clean finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Clean, crisp finish.

Overall - A nice, clean hop bomb. A bit simple, but pretty tasty nonetheless.

My first one of this and it surely won't be my last. Another outstanding beer from MBC. Pale hue with a slight hazy look, nice head and lacing, citrusy smell with a group "hug" of ingredients that left a slight bitterness that was very nice. Good job MBC

From a 3-week-old bottle, pours a slightly hazy, pale gold with a couple fingers of dense, bright-white foam. Good lacing.

Smell is white grapefruit juice, oranges, pine, dank and an undercurrent of spicy, minty eucalyptus. Taste is similar, with a pithy, resiny bitterness. Very little malt in evidence.

Feel is on the thin side of medium, but a brisk carbonation keeps it from being too watery.

Overall, this is a fantastic IPA, clean, elegant and beautifully constructed.

Bottle dated 3/16/2016:
This is yet another crisp, clean IPA from Maine Beer Co. The hops sit atop a light crackery malt that allow them to shine. They seem to me to be well represented without being overwhelming, which is nice.

The beer pours a very light yellow-white, with a fair amount of haze. Head doesn't build up too large on a medium pour, but it does end up providing a little lacing.

Nose is full of lemony citrus leafy hop notes. A little citrus zest and pith in general, but mainly lemony. To a much lesser degree, there's a little earthiness and perhaps just a little funk on some sniffs.

Taste opens clean, and then a bit of earthiness comes out. It's a bitter earthiness, though, and out of that earth a the bitterness grows. It brings along with it a little citrus tang and pithy bitterness. The citrus comes and goes, but the pith lasts well after the sip is done. With warmth, a little bit of the tropics enter the taste. A refreshing feel with a medium body; in the end it is a little drying and not as clean as some other offerings. The lingering bitterness is quite enjoyable, however.

Fresh pick up from Maine brewery. Poured into a snifter.

Looks like most IPAS, light orange color with a nice head and light lacing.

Smells tropical; hints of oranges, mango, pineapple and hops. Very nice nose.

Tastes great. A smooth and balanced brew. I feel I like it's a great ipa to start people off who are against piney or bitter IPAs, but there is a nice pine taste to it.

Mouth feel is smooth, medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a great beer. Recommend everyone drink it you can, but maybe not seek it out hard in trades. Perfect as an add on. Well balanced and we'll constructed brew with a nice typical finish.

Pours clear, light gold color, moderate bubbly head that fades slowly.
Clean hop smell that lasts
Dry but not bitter taste, slightly sour, hops come through after a few swallows. Almost no malt flavor.
Light feel, but its clear you have a flavorful beer in your mouth
Nicely balanced dry beer, but I like Mo better

500 ml bottle was poured into a Spiegelau glass.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a puffy small layer. It is a golden straw yellow color with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Light tropical, lemony, grape, tangerine, grapefruit, biscuity, wheaty, and pale malts.

Taste: Have to say that this beer got better as it warmed up. Tropical, citrus, lemon, grape, tangerine, and grapefruit hops followedby biscuity, toasted, and pale malts. Light bitterness and chewy notes in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Light, crisp, refreshing, sessionable feel, medium carbonation, slight bitterness, and slight chewy notes.

Overall: Second of the four hop program beers. I like what I've had so far and will revisit this one again.

Poured a pale golden yellow color in a Spiegelau glass with a 4F head.

The aroma is not strong but quite pleasant: very floral, tropical fruit, earthy, citrus.

Taste: excellent balance of fruit flavors. Citrus, pine, and winey. The flavor is subtly different than
other IPAs. The key here is balance- no flavor dominates.

Finish: spicy, hoppy- just right and matches the taste.

An excellent IPA. I especially like the thought put into brewing a balanced IPA with subtlety.
Not easy. Drinkable and quite enjoyable.

Outstanding - soft body, smooth mouthfeel with a crisp dry finish. Autumn gold pour with a resilient head. Fragrant aroma of pine, citrus, hay and grapes. Those Nelson hops are unmistakable - pineapple, mango, orange rind, green grapes with a light cracker malt. Drinks real easy with a clean bitter finish.

500 mL bottle poured into an Allagash sample glass.

Look: Very pale yellow and very slightly hazy. Little to no head that subsides with a nice lacing.

Smell: Super dank, earthy hops. Pithy grapefruit, light orange and lemon, pine and a bit of berry. A bit of tropical fruits are somewhere in the mix.

Taste: Tropical fruits up front followed by grapefruit, orange and lemon. Berry on the end of the sip. Residual resin and pine on the back end.

Feel: Feels like any run of the mill IPA. Nothing special but it's certainly smooth.

Overall: Another great beer from Maine Brewing Co. I prefer this one to Lunch in all honesty as it's a bit more drinkable.

Not sure what it is but I LOVE the feel of this beer. WOW - so silky. The looks is a cloudy light yellow with carbonation floating slowly to the top in a tube in the middle of the beer. The head was two fingers when poured from a bottle into a large 20 oz tulip glass. The head is fluffy and the lacing is pronounced. The smell is lack luster. Not a lot here, but grapefruit notes. Not a lot on the nose but it is nice. Nothing to complain about - would just appreciate a stronger smell. The taste is subtle an very refreshing. The 6.5 abv was hidden well, would put this in the category of a 4.5 session IPA. The best attribute is the feel. Id you could imagine melting down a silt scarf in order to drink it - yeah - it is that smooth. I love this beer.

Nice IPA from Maine Beer Company. I'll take a Lunch or Another One over this most of the time, but still a nice change of pace.

Beer is a slightly hazy straw color with a thing ivory head. Aroma is a powerful hop blast: pine and citrus. Taste follows the nose. Citrus and pine give way to a dry finish that is a pleasant mix of bitter and tropical fruit. Mouthfeel is excellent. It is well carbonated. Assertive but not at all heavy. Overall, this is an excellent beer. An unusual mix of hops has produced an extremely tasty and drinkable beer.
