The concept for out third Hop Program beer, Beer III, was a hoppy black ale incorporating Citra, Lemondrop. Cascade, and Falconer's Flight hops. While dark in appearance, Beer III presents with massive hop aroma and flavor. It finishes dry with a touch of chocolate and coffee lingering on the palate. We hope you enjoy our latest hoppy creating. Cheers!

On-tap 12/16/2016 at British Beer Company in Walpole, MA, served in a nonic pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a large dense beige head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, a lot of smoke, some chocolate, floral hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with a strong smokiness that is quickly followed by a hearty roasted malt character and a strong floral hops bitterness. Then some mild sweetness comes in from flavors of citrus and chocolate to create a very good balance for the style. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is a very good beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.

Poured on draft into a pint glass at The Local Eatery. Pours a very attractive dark brown with a two inch sticky dark tan head, that leaves behind excellent lace.

Smell is dark chocolate, expresso, grainy biscuit, toffee, pine, and grapefruit.

Taste follows but less intense, dark chocolate, coffee, toffee, biscuit, pine, and some subtle grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is less than medium, moderate carbonation, a tiny bit dry, and very drinkable.

Overall this very good for a little 5.5% ABV. Was expecting better and bigger flavor from the nose, but it is a very solid beer.

Tasting glass at the brewery.

Appearance: Dark beer, very dark brown. Short white head that recedes to a crown of bubbles quickly.

Aroma: Citrusy, hoppy beer. Doesn't smell like what it looks like.

Taste: Nice combo of dark beer chocolatiness and hoppy beer pine and citrus. Good mix of styles.

Mouthfeel: Very drinkable. Not heavy.

Overall: Really good hoppy dark beer. Not a style I often reach for, but this beer nails it.

Citra black ale sounds gross. But I was never a fan of black IPAs. Aside from the fact that they are a fucking oxymoron, the combination of dark roasty malts and sharp American hops was at best okay and typically it kind of sucked. Thank god that trend died out quickly, and brewers turned their attention to serving us straight lactic acid at 25 dollars a pour...

Anyhow, I bought this not for the style but because Maine Beer knows their shit.

It pours very dark. Almost opaque ruby with a decent head.

Smells... just like hops. Maybe picking up a little buckwheat although it doesn't actually contain it. Strong cascade and ab it of citra with the others just leveling things out.

Tastes like a good hop profile all the way through, until the finish, which is dark barley. Odd for the first sip or two, and then after the the novelty wears off I'm kind of shocked no one else has been able to pull this off. *This* is what a hop-forward dark ale should taste like! Others have been like English stouts with overwhelming american hop profiles. This is more in the conceptual style of schwarz, but with a hop profile that remarkably does not clash with the stouty malt.
