Our take on an American amber ale. Complex malt bill delivers notes of dark raisin, chocolate and biscuit. Copious additions of American hops yield notes of pine and citrus.

Zoe pours a dark copper/amber color. It looks a little hazy. Backlighting reveals some scarlet highlights. It’s a nice color. It’s capped with a really nice, light tan head that stands almost two fingers tall. Impressive. It’s also very slow to recede, leaving a very thick, sticky web of lace in its wake. This is good lookin’ stuff!

It also smells delicious! The malt base smells like a nice mix of caramel, chocolate, and toasted malt. Smells nice and sturdy. It doesn’t smell all that sweet. Hops are a much bigger part of the equation than I would’ve guessed. They smell strong…and delicious. They have a nice citric scent that works well with the malt base. Grapefruit, orange, and lemon are noted. There is a good bit of pine in there, as well. Alcohol really isn’t noticeable. Nice.

The flavor is every bit as impressive. Really good stuff. The malt base is definitely a mix of caramel and chocolate varieties. It’s a little sweet. The chocolate flavors are mostly cocoa and bittersweet dark chocolate. Toasted malts are also noted. The provide a really nice platform for the hops that follow. Citrus grapefruit, orange, and pine flavors are abundant and are very flavorful. It’s nicely balanced, but the hop flavors are vibrant. Alcohol is masked very well. Not all that noticeable. Finishes with a nice mix of cocoa, pine, and toasted flavors.

It has a medium body that’s nice and smooth. Carbonation is light and restrained. The bubbles are soft. This stuff goes down so easily. I’d take down a few bottles if I had them. No doubt about it.

Zoe is my first encounter with Maine Beer Company. I’m really impressed. This is an Amber Ale that packs a ton of flavor. While it features a lot of hop flavor, there is a nice balance between malt and hops. This is really good stuff. You’d be remiss to pass it up.

500ml bottle: This one pours a clear, very dark amber color. There was a bit of a tan head on it, that lingered awhile and left some lacing. Nice nose! Lots of citrus, pine and malts. The taste is very good. Definitely a bit of a bitter hop presence. Pine and citrus, with a good malt backbone. No sweetness beating out these hops. Nice Beer!
