Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our take on an American amber ale. Complex malt bill delivers notes of dark raisin, chocolate and biscuit. Copious additions of American hops yield notes of pine and citrus.

First couple sips are all hops (not a bad thing) slowly gives way to a rich smooth maltiness with the hops in the background. Mouthfeel is so smooth and creamy. Could have it every day. Beautiful winter beer.

a: a hazy mixture of purple, amber, ruby red, and light brown. poured a large 3 finger solid tan head. real nice looking head

s: caramel malts, mango, pineapple, passionfruit, strawberry. there is a hint of sweet brown sugar, and a crackery malt backbone. just a hint of yeast aroma

t: an extremely smooth, yet rich caramel flavor hits you right away. that is followed by the bready, crackery malts. behind those is an extremely faint tropical fruity hop note, and some earthy tea-leaf like bitterness. the transitions of flavors in here is exceptional

m: mouthfeel is on the medium side. given the size of the head, i expected a little more carbonation. but, i think the carbonation level is very nice for an amber in here

o: my second MBC beer, and i think i'm in love with these guys. as mentioned above, the transition of flavors in this beer is very good. extremely smooth transition. it has the qualities i appreciate in an amber, with a nice amount of hops - not overpowering, not even the focus

L: Pours brilliant chestnut under a 3” cream to light tan colored persistent foam collar that hugs the side of the glass.
S: Earthy, citrusy, spicy hop aromas, light toast, faint chocolate.
T: A rich malt palate starts slightly sweet and then dries out on the finish. Biscuit, nuts, raisin, a little anise to horehound, and traces of chocolate and espresso give dimension to the flavor. A citrus rind bitter accent on the finish.
F: The carbonation if very soft nd creamy, slightly low, the body is medium.
O: A richly textured amber ale with big malt and hop flavors. One of the better ones out there.

Appearance - Bottled on date of 04/28/15

Appearance - Pours hazy and dark amber red in color with a sandstone colored two finger head. Good retention, then breaks down to a mostly barren surface with a thick ring of suds around the edge.

Smell - Smell evokes freshly cut orange with lesser grapefruit and pine notes, while the malts come through as lightly toasted and with a hint of caramel and chocolate.

Taste - Not quite as strong or aggressive as the pungent aroma led on, but still has good flavor complexity and great balance. Starts with a bit of citrus and pine hoppiness, but backed by a firm, almost equal malt backbone that consists of toasted malt with touches of caramel and chocolate. Hints of woodiness. Light orange pith bitterness lingers in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with low, soft carbonation. Smooth, easy drinker with a slightly dry finish.

Overall - This is pretty good, but feel it could stand to have more carbonation, because it comes across as a bit flat, and despite the complexities, the flavor tastes slightly muted; kinda reminds me of an Arrogant Bastard that's sat open all night. That might sound like an unjust description, but believe me an AB that's sat around for 10 hours is still pretty damn good. In any case, I wouldn't mind drinking this again, but certainly wouldn't go out of my way for it.
