Seen this bottle many, many times at my local spots but finally decided to pick one up. Bottled three weeks prior to pouring it into a pint glass. Nice black body with a tightly packed tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, bitter chocolate and vanilla extract. The vanilla smells like it belongs in the mix as opposed to be thrown into the beer to add another flavor. Taste warms the palate - roasted malt, ground medium-roast coffee, bitter chocolate, vanilla, walnuts and slight char. Excellent balance of flavors and super drinkable. Finishes with a nice bitterness and it's so smooth throughout. Great stout with an ABV that hits my sweet spot...but here comes a mea culpa on my personal failing as a reviewer - I just can't help but acknowledge the price/format. I'd like to think it doesn't impact my enjoyment of the beer but let's be honest - I know it does, even if just a sliver. I suck, I know. The price/format sucks too.

I had been wanting to try this for months before finding myself at Rosebud American Kitchen and Bar in Cambridge, MA, and seeing it on their beer list. I was not disappointed: it pours a dark black and has hints of vanilla to the smell. The taste is pleasantly mellow, with relatively minor coffee and chocolate tones and again a very soft hint of vanilla. Lighter and less thick than many stouts, it has a delightful fizz and slight sourness on the tongue.

Bought a bottle at Ryan & Casey's Liquors in Greenfield, MA. The beer has a dark black appearance with a light brown color, thin head with some lacing. Aromas are mostly a cocoa smell but I can sort of sense that vanilla bean hint near the end. The taste generally followed the nose with a bit of dark fruit or maybe raspberry. Very creamy texture and mouthfeel really makes this delicious. Overall, an awesome mouthfeel and pretty good appearance.

Pours a deep mahogany color with a tight, tan head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of deep roasted notes mostly, a hint of vanilla as it warms.

Tastes of the deep roasted notes layered with the vanilla and oats. Roasted notes lead off with coffee, cocoa, and some molasses. This gives way to a touch of sweetness before vanilla notes. Some oat nuttiness comes towards the end along with earthy bitterness. Finishes with a lingering roasted bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium with a soft, underwhelming amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a good stout profile, but the vanilla could be more prominent.

Liked this beer. Had a good look to it. Great vanilla smell with coffee/cocoa hints. Taste was enjoyable but not the best part. The best part was the feel to me had a bit more carbonation then I am used to in this style. Another great beer from Maine Beer Company!

500ml bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Pitch black with a one-finger tan head
S: Coffee, cocoa, vanilla
T: Tons of bitter chocolate, bitter cocoa, a bit of vanilla towards the finish
M: Medium-bodied, bitter, a touch smooth
O: This is tasty but not what I was expecting. I anticipated it to be a bit sweeter/less bitter with the vanilla addition but it packs in tons of flavor

Black in color with no penetration to light. There's an inch of densely packed brown foam resting on top. I smell a bit of dark roasted malt and a light dose of bakers chocolate. I'm definitely tasting what I smelled with bakers chocolate and a bit of dark roasted malt. As it warms you really start to notice the coffee and vanilla notes. The mouth is creamy and silky smooth. A really nice American stout.

Coffee and vanilla together. Pours black with just a very thin head. Aroma matches the taste coffee and vanilla. Feel is good for 6.5% stout. Overall, it's a good one. Give it a try.

Bottle to snifter.
LOOK: dark black, medium off white head, Fades to lacing.
AROMA: smells like an irish stout, with a vanilla backbone. Barley and vanilla.
TASTE: Bread, vanilla, ash.
FEEL: silty, airy, light.

Very much like a souped up guinness, or oyester stout. Flavors are nice, but do not blow you out of the water. Good beer, not great.

Poured almost completely black with a thin layer of brown head. The nose is Vanilla, coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. The flavor is roasted coffee with a good vanilla addition and some chocolate. The feel is a little syrupy and thick. Very good stout. Like the addition of vanilla.

Sampled at brewery. Great rendition. Still has that fresh taste of the sea salt air but fills the role of classic stout at same time- interesting combo. Dark opaque haze. Sweet malt build. Silk then crisper finish then most.

16.9 oz bottle dated 5/31/16. Hopefully still in prime condition, knowing even less hoppy Maine Beer Co offerings don't age. Poured into Carton Dubviant glass.

L: Big head, but no retention or lacing, little bit of a tan ring/cap. Beer is a very dark brown.

S: Caramel malts, roasted coffee, and chocolate. Not dominating, but nice. Less vanilla than you might expect.

T: Roasted coffee biggest, unsweetened dark chocolate, a bit of vanilla, caramel and wheat malts.

F: Medium bodied, light carbonation, good construction, a bit bitter on finish.

O: Might amend if I find a super-fresh bottle sometime, but I think this is about how it's supposed to taste and it's quite decent.

16.9oz bottle served in a big snifter. 041216 75 is the code printed on the label.

Pours dark, opaque, with a medium light brown head and lots of carbonation. Smell is roasty with a dark fruity sweetness, definitely some vanilla aroma.

Taste is a nice, mild, sweet and roasty stout. Pretty textbook, but well done, and the vanilla is a very nice kicker.

Mouthfeel is rich and smooth, overall, nice beer.

Cola black with two fat fingers of creamy-looking tan-colored head. Nutty aroma, with chocolate and a little chicory coffee behind. The taste is initially of a straight-forward stout, again with nutty malt flavors the most prominent. There's just a hint of the vanilla bean coming through on the backend, which does leave behind a little sweetness. Pretty nicely done in that regard. Medium bodied with modest carbonation in the mouthfeel. Not bad, but nothing all that special either.

This stout pours a pitch black color with a medium foamy tan head. The smell is fairly mild, but is of roasted grains and chocolate. The flavor is of roasted grains, chocolate, vanilla, and a little bit of coffee. The flavor is milder than the King Titus, but is more diverse with all of the flavors playing a more equal role. The finish is very creamy and a little bit Guinness-like, but not as dry. The body is heavy as it should be. This beer is a nice contrast to the King Titus. It is polished where the King Titus is a brute force of flavor. I would personally prefer the latter in most cases, but in this case I think it’s a fairly even trade-off. This is definitely a nice stout and I think it’s a little bit underrated.

A bit underwhelming.
Just a nice solid stout. A little thin on the feel, but well balanced and clean. Really nice vanilla aroma and surprising coffee taste in the finish.

Pours black with 2-3 fingers of creamy light mocha head with good retention and spots of lacing. Nice sweet nose with lots of roasted grain, vanilla and chocolate. The taste is also full of roasted grain, vanilla, marshmallows and chocolate with some light bitterness and char on the finish. Medium plus body with soft carbonation resulting in a smooth, round mouthfeel very nice considering its 6.5 ABV.

Near black with a beige head that quickly diminishes. Good lacing. Light smoked malt nose. More malt on the palate and drier than expected. Coffee, burnt malt, some vanilla. Over medium body and moderate carbonation.

Enjoyed (and lucky to have) from a growler in a snifter via Country Fresh Market in Beechmont. This Fine stout pours a deep black with brown highlights and a nice tan head of foam that settles to a thick ring, very nice pooling layer, and excellent sudsy lacing. Nose of balanced dark chocolate, subtle coffee, subtle caramel, and subtle char. Flavors follow the nose with charred dark chocolate, subtle raisin and coffee on the middle, and sweet cream and caramel on the back featuring prominent roasted malts. Nice mouth feel, medium carbonation, and a coating creamy aftertaste. A perfect stout. Excellent!

Cheers

A very nice mild Stout, well balanced flavors nothing overpowering. Was a little high on carbonation when first poured for my liking in stouts, but settled out nicely over 20 min. Would love to see this in a cask or on Nitro.

Gentle and mild, this semi-dry stout has just enough vanilla that you notice it if you're looking for it, but it doesn't get carried away. So extra points for balance and restraint of flavor, but it's just a solid "good" beer to begin with, so whatever. Worth a shot if you like vanilla stouts, not up to the legendarily mouthwatering reputation of the brewery overall.

Found this one in my beer fridge forgot I had dated 9/15/15 Poured jet black smelled chocolate and coffee. Thin head no lacing. Flavors came out more as it warmed to room temp. Very drinkable not to heavy. Nice vanilla finish, drank a little like a black ale or porter, in my opinion. Star Gazer Stout from Cape Cod beer came to mind as I drank it.
