Maine, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our “East Coast” version of a West Coast-style IPA. Intense hop flavors and aromas of tropical and citrus fruits and pine dominate. A subtle malt sweetness brings the beer into balance.

Lunch is a special whale that has been spotted off the Maine coast since 1982. She has what looks like a bite taken out of her fin, which adds to her unique character. We dedicate this beer to her determination and persistence.

Keep on swimming!

Brought back from New England trip; bottle dated 7/21/11; 16.9 oz. bottle poured into tulip glass.

A: Cloudy gold/amber; a little effervescence; some yeast particles; voluminous, fluffy, slightly off-white head that falls slowly and leaves a thick layer of solid lacing.

S: Citrus, with some pine resin and malt.

T: Malt and citrus/fruit, then modest bitterness.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation; creamy; neutral finish.

O: Very flavorful and balanced. This is a very fine IPA.

Thanks to mtardiff for getting me this in a trade. Bottled on 10/25/11. Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a snifter.

A - A gentle pour yields a coppery orange color with a thin head. The head dissipated fairly quickly, and there's not much lacing. Gentle carbonation is visible.
Edit: I poured the second half of the bottle into my glass more aggressively and it developed a nice 1-finger head that retained well and produced nice lacing.

S - Excellent nose on this one. Plenty of grapefruit, orange, mango and pineapple at the forefront with nice malty notes in the background.

T - Strong grapefruit with muted pineapple at first, then bready malts followed by a very faint caramel sweetness. The pine hop bitterness dominates the finish and lingers well into the next sip.

M - Medium bodied and smooth with light carbonation that let's the hop flavors shine. The hop oils coat lightly and the finish is slightly dry.

O/D - Second type of beer from Maine Brewing Co. that I've had. They are definitely one of my favorite breweries from out east so far. Would drink this again in a heartbeat.

16.9oz bottle served in a snifter.
bottled 10/25/11

pours a dull coppery shade with some haze to it; fairly aggressive pour yields a healthy 1 and 1/2" head, frothy with strong retention and lots of lacing.

aromatic nose definitely packs a punch with strong notes of citric (notably grapefruit, a touch of lemon) and pine hops... some malt character evident in the background.

taste follows the aroma closely. citrus, pine, and a hint of a floral component... average bitterness... medium-bodied mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

overall an excellent IPA, flavorful and very drinkable. for all its hype i'd put it behind a few beers that are far more readily available (ithaca flower power comes to mind) but i'd still put this up there in the A-/A range.

A: Cloudy dark amber/ruby. One finger white head with decent retention. Nice lacing.

S: Fresh hops, grapefruit, orange peel, smooth grainy malts with grassy/earthy tones. Big, full aroma.

T/M: One word comes to mind: Fresh. Fresh hop flavor, fresh, crisp mouthfeel, fresh ingredients. Moderately light body. Not far from the nose, cirtus and sweet malts with a load of fresh hops. Utterly delicious. Moderately carbonated.

D: Fantastic.
