Maine Beer Company
Maine, United States

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our first run at an American Pale Ale. Flavors and aromas of zesty citrus, passionfruit, and pine present themselves throughout. A very subtle malt sweetness for balance, but this is intended to finish dry.

Pours a golden amber color, relatively clear, with a thin cap of foam.

Smells very floral, with some pine and herbal notes. The malt is very, very clean, allowing the very subtle nuances of the hops to be picked out. Citrus is there, but I'm picking out a lot more of those very soft hop tones that are normally buried beneath heavier malt aromas. Given that the malt is all but nonpresent, you can really get the full hop experience.

My first impression is that the flavor is very good, but like Peeper, is unexpectedly light bodied. Not quite as airy as Peeper, but definitely lighter than what I normally expect from an american pale, and certainly a 6%er. The malt is incredibly clean and dry, offering very little to get in the way of the hop experience. For such a mellow beer, the depth of the hops is remarkable. Some juicy citric flavors, but it finishes off dry, foresty and floral. Maybe a little light on the tongue for mid-october, but there's no denying that these guys know what they're doing.

These guys certainly know how to brew. Northern New England is really experiencing a brewing renaissance after decades of buttery ringwood sameness. Two thumbs up.

Pours very light straw. A little cloudy. Fine bubble egg shell head. Sticky laces. The smell bursts with citrus notes: grapefruit, mangos, lemon peel, and pineapple. The taste follows. This is a great beer for citrus-heads. Very light malts backbone and distinctive yeast character. Very smooth, crisp, and light body.

This is a great beer - all around. A lot of the citrus notes of Zombie Dust are similar and the light malt to hop ratio of Pliney is present.

I think this is excellent and is underrated.
