A black ale that puts the flavor of the malt front and center. It has a mild hop character that balances strong notes of cocoa and hints of coffee. A full-bodied roasty treat that finishes dry. Pairs well with chocolate, BBQ, as well as fresh shellfish.

The beer pours almost black with an ample tan head of dense bubbles that ever so slowly falls. The beautiful foam cap falls to chunky rafts that eventually drops to about an 1/8 inch layer. It really hangs in there nicely. This beer is also extremely clear - beautiful in the glass.

The aroma is rich with chocolate, coffee, and I swear I smell some marshmallow sweetness and vanilla. A little caramel, maybe just a little on the overcooked side. Not super intense, but a very pleasant and nicely rounded aroma.

Based on the aroma, I expected a bit of a jumble in the flavor department, but the taste is very tight and concise. There's "just enough" of what the aromas reveal. The sweetness is just a whisper and that highlights the darker notes of the coffee and chocolate. Just enough bitterness on the end to do the reset.

Clean feel with maybe a touch of chalkiness on the finish, but quite light and not overly carbonated. Mellow on the tongue. A refreshing porter? Yeah - I'm OK with it being a bit light on the body.

Overall, a clean, well-crafted beer that is a good representation of the style even though it is a touch on the thin side. Recommended.

As good a session black as Baba. This is real porter. Bodega in Park Slope by the bottle.

A: Dark brown body with one finger tan head that sports retention and plenty of lace.

S: Sturdy roasted malt, cocoa, dankness, grass, and smoke.

T: Follows the aroma, roasted malt, cocoa, licorice, and dark chocolate. Surprising abundance of flavor (4) and fine bitterness at the finish.

M: Medium bodied with bitter and dry finish.

O: Great craft. This could be a regular in my fridge. Sum greater than it's parts, scores high for being session beer.

Growler filled at Steinmann Deli in Yorktown, NY ($11.99)

Near black, dark tan head, that stays nicely.

More then a hint of chalky chocolate in the nose.

Robust and flavorful porter. More chocolate, dark malts, smoke and some vanilla to add to the complexity. Would do well with some BBQ, or a chocolate desert.

Enjoyable, clearly a quality creation in brewing. More good beer from Long Island NY

Had on tap at Whole Foods on Columbus Circle in NYC. Review from notes.

A: Served in a pint glass, Black Duck was dark brown with one finger tan head on top. Good retention, lasting for at least half of the glass, before slowly reducing to a thin cap on top. Foamy lacing left behind.

S: Lightly roasted malt, a little bit of chocolate and cocoa, and a hint of smoke actually.

T: Similar to the aroma, lightly roasted malt and chocolate. There is a surprising bitterness at the end.

M: Medium bodied with active carbonation. Has a bitter and slightly dry finish.

O: Great flavor for a low abv beer. Another surprising gem from a brewery I had never heard of.

A - Pours dark brown, with a brown foam. Plenty of lacing.

S - Smells of cocoa and roasted malt.

T - Pretty tasty. Some sweetness that is kinda like belgian chocolate. There is a roasted malty flavor that continues throughout. Gives off a little smoky heat at the end.

M - Feels a bit heavier than it is. Really hits the tongue with both sweet, smoky, and bitter notes.

O - May be my favorite Greenport Beer. Really a solid porter that anyone who enjoys the style would like.

Decanted from a tap into a tulip glass at brewery.
A: Dark mahogany to black with a quarter inch tan head. Little lacing or legs.
S: Aroma roasty , almost burnt black coffee more than unsweetened chocolate.
T: Black coffee that has burned in the pot, light pepperiness for bittering. Little aftertaste.
M: Light bodied, light carbonation.
O: Burnt flavor detracts from the sweetness that would characterize this style. Bitterness seems as much from burnt malt as from hops. Drinkable without being something I would return to.

Had a pint at Astoria Bier and Cheese on a Sunday afternoon. Overall, this was just a nice smooth, yet roasty porter. There was a mild, underlying creaminess that should come with an English porter. There's no hops presence, but the barley brings a great mix of light espresso, blackened toast, and touch of dry, dark chocolate. Order a pint if you find this on tap.
