.2L clear bottle with a swingtop served into a stemgoblet at a bar in Vilnius, Lithuania. 14.0% ABV.

Best before: 07/04/2015. Expectations are high; this is purportedly the best beer in Lithuania. Cost was 12 LTL.

HEAD: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

There's no head, nor any lacing.

BODY: Dark luxurious deep amber in colour. Almost sanguine. Looks rich and exquisite. Quite inviting in spite of its seeming undercarbonation. No yeast/sediment can be seen within.

AROMA: Heavy on the spices, but boy do they seem to work well. Cinnamon, allspice, heavy nutmeg, ginger, and clove. Fruit is here as well, glued to a plum-redolent booziness which comes off warming and nectary. Ripe cherry skin, red grape, plum skin.

Evokes mulled wine. It's a fascinating aroma, average in strength, but promising an incredible beer. Subtle and teasing, with the amber malt base melting seamlessly into the other notes.

TASTE: The mulled wine aromatics were enticing, and the taste delivers on their promises. Spices are abundant - everything from the aroma pays off in the taste - and nutmeg dominates. Booziness is prominent as well, which may turn off some drinkers.

Refined fruity flavours of plum, grape, raisin. There's some fantastic subtlety here; each flavour is excellently integrated into the whole. Intricate, with above average depth and intensity of flavour. Flavour duration is average.

Christmas spice, faint herbal notes (mint), kisses of vine, anise, and caramel. Some faint burnt malt is there as well; this beer matures as it comes to temperature.

It's a sweet beer to an extent, but the spices and alcohol help curb the malty sweetness. Well balanced, with the mulled wine warmth strangely welcome in this unique ale.

It's a rich refined taste with enough nuances to interest the discerning drinker. I dig the mulled character, but this does lack the complexity and approachability of the best beers in the nearest style (I guess barleywine, but I consider this more of a Lithuanian strong country ale).

Some may find its lightly tannic flavour off-putting.

MOUTHFEEL: The undercarbonation actually works; as the beer warms, alcohol comes to the forefront and aids the warming sensation of the beer, accentuating the mulled/spiced flavour of the brew and evoking a hot wine at a Christmas market (if you'll forgive the pretension implicit in that phrasing).

Smooth, wet, full-bodied, and aptly thick & heavy on the palate. The low carbonation prevents it from feeling too filling or overbearing, but make no mistake - this is a sipper. Has a plump supple presence on the palate.

OVERALL: They picked the perfect packaging volume for this strong brew; I wish more breweries offered strong ales like these in smaller quainter bottles. A must-try when in Lithuania, and easily one of the best beers in the country.

Small bottle at Bambalyne.

Heard it pours with no head so I dumped it only to have the bubbles that did form fizz away right then. Fills the glass with a deep dark brown and amber.

The nose and taste is full of spice and herb. Orange, ginger, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, minty and alcohol heat is always present. A bit like gingerbread.

Pretty flat on the tongue. Not all that big bodied for 14%. More akin to mulled wine than beer. Would be great for winter time.

Quite a beer here.
