A classic tripel, but a few points subtracted for an overly carbonated mouth feel, which is not optimal for my taste, but that mellows off after a little while though. One of the must-try Belgians, and after a year or so of obsessing over quads, a reminder that the Tripel has many joys of its own.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours a golden yellow with good carbonation. Head retention was significant. Nose is pine, citrus peel, hoppy, bread. Reminds me somewhat of an IPA. Taste is caramel, bread, lemon, bitterness. Overall, really good, although perhaps a bit bitter for me. Mouthfeel is good.

Look: nice golden color, fair head
Smell: grain, mostly. Almost like bread
Taste: a wonderful palate, dominated by the grain flavors but well complemented by some fruity sweetness. Some spicier notes as well.
Feel: a decent mouthfeel but nothing spectacular. Has a tendency to leave too bitter of an aftertaste, though I've only found this when I've had it straight from the bottle.

I am just ending a week in the Netherlands. I saw this in the supermarket nearby for 1.75 e per 11 oz bottle. About $2. I really enjoyed it. I like that in NE they sell all beers individually and without a markup vs a 6 pack. A great beer and a great country. I will look for it back in the states. (Note: single pint bottles of weihenstephaner hefe weis sell in NE for $2.20!)

From the bottle, it pours a clear light golden color with a nice head that lasts a bit. Add the yeasty bottom and it becomes a cloudy light amber, still with a nice head. Scents of fruitiness and bread permeate the nose. The mouth gets some pepper and yeast, which amplifies, unsurprisingly, with the addition of the yeasty bottoms. Alcohol is definitely present, but in a pleasant way, along with the breadiness, particularly after the yeast is added. Yum!

Steadily poured into a Rochefort chalice. Pale golden yellow with a one finger white head. Lots of carbonation and very clear. After a few sips I poured in the yeast, which gave a more cloudy (and overall better) beer.

Scents of banana, cloves, caramel, malts and fresh baked bread.

Up front, I get flavours of pepper, spices and Belgian yeast. There are some hints of alcohol at cellar temperature, with a fairly strong bitterness, similar to that of lemon rind, but more malty with only a hint of the fruit's flavour. Once the yeast is added from the bottom of the bottle, the beer becomes sweeter and more balanced, with a bread sweetness, some biscuit and toffee...

Good carbonation that helps the flavours materialise on the pallete. A lovely Tripel overall.
