Notes: Westmalle Dubbel (7%) is a dark red-brown beer with a rich, complex taste thanks to re-fermentation in the bottle. You pick up touches of caramel, malt and fruity esters reminiscent of ripe banana. The beer pearls beneath a covering of dense, cream-coloured froth. A lovely lace pattern forms on the inside of the glass once emptied. The long, dry finish of this balanced, mild Trappist beer will stay with you.
Trappist or Dubbel?

In 1865 the monks of Westmalle started brewing a dark Trappist beer in addition to their table beer. They adjusted the recipe in 1926, doubling the amounts of raw ingredients to produce a new, stronger beer. Dubbel is a logical name for this doubled beer, though it is more often simply called ‘Trappist’. To this day, the 1926 recipe is the basis for Westmalle Dubbel.
Westmalle Dubbel: bottle and tap

We are all familiar with Westmalle Dubbel in 33 cl bottles. But around 150 carefully selected Belgian cafés and restaurants serve this beer on tap from barrels containing 20, 30 and 50 litres. In the barrel, this living beer evolves differently to emerge with a slightly sweeter taste.

Westmalle Dubbel can also be purchased in 75 cl bottles. The beer matures in a different way in a larger bottle to produce a noticeably milder finish.

This Westmalle Dubbel was purchased in a 11.2 oz. bottle that states 7% alc. vol. and does have an expiration date. This is a dark burgundy brown, cloudy, with a head that sticks to the sides. Has a licorice caramel smell.
The taste is malty and has a crisp cabonation.The after taste has a refreshness of the locorice caramel flavor.
Mouthfeel is not real syrupy with even carbonation throughout.
The drinkability is good for this type of beverage.

not sure why it took me so long to get to this legendary brew. i do not think it is as good or distinct as the tripel they do, which stands as one of the greatest old school belgian beers around. this is still really good, technically near perfect, and quite complex. classic dubbel, dark reddish brown in color, a little thick, with a pretty airy soda sort of head in the goblet. a little yeasty, but mostly cleaned up looking. aroma of fruity belgian yeast, almost german hefe elements here, esters of banana and apple and raisin all over it, with some nice sweet caramelized grain sugars and a toasted warmness about it. the yeast drives the flavor, pretty classic belgian strain, fermented warmer and allowed to show its true colors. less spice to this than other belgians, cleaner maybe, despite it being on the sweeter side. i think its amazing that the alcohol is a little lower here than we usually see in the style, its almost a session belgian for what it is. awesome richness and depth of flavor, some dried cherry notes as it moves along, vanilla, tobacco leaf, raisin, date, rustic but highly refined. often copied, but very rarely does anyone come close to making a dubbel this good.

330ml bottle into the appropriate Westmalle branded chalice. Paid £2.30 for a single.

Pours a cloudy, dark mahogany body, which displays some ruby garnets when held to the light and allows plenty of fine carbonation to be observed against the edges of the glass. A two-finger in height, thick, foamy, light tan coloured head slowly reduces to a dense cap, leaving behind only minuscule specs of lace.

The dark, rich and well-balanced nose predominantly consists of fruity yeast esters. Banana and raisin initially lead above impressions of stewed apple and woody poached pears. Tart red berries, red currants and clove spices follow, while traces of dark roast, lightly bitter chocolate malt and musty, earthy, woody hop profiles become perceptible towards the back-end. Taste follows in much the same way. Estery notes of banana, stewed apple and pears poached in spiced red wine lead above a host of red, dark and dried fruits. Raisins, currants, figs, plums, prunes, red grapes, berries and overripe cherry are joined by hints of lemony citrus, warming clove and faint traces of lightly roasted malts to form the bulk of the lengthy mid-palate. Towards the back-end, phenolic spice and roasted malt characters gently build, replacing well-defined individual fruits with a rich fruitcake-like combination. In the mouth, a light body paired with plenty of lively, expansive carbonation gives a feel that’s reasonably smooth and crisp, despite being just a little too thin and spritzy. After the swallow, rich fruitcake profiles gentle fade, while traces of musty and woody hops join hints of lingering clove to provide mild drying bitterness and a suggestion of vinous astringency.

Overall this is an excellent beer. Rich, robust and incredibly well balanced, it’s hugely complex but remains ridiculously easy to drink. Perhaps carbonation could be slightly less assertive, but ultimately it still smells and tastes delicious, is readily available and is excellent value for money. It’s my go-to Belgian Dubbel. Recommended.

Deep mahogany color with an inch of off white foam and fair amount of sediment. The nose is incredible, a truly remarkable blend of chocolate and stone fruit with touch of earthy woodiness. The taste is considerably more mellow in the flavor though most of the same notes are there as well as a touch of anise. One thing really surprises me about the taste, and that's the hop presence on the back end. The stated best by date on this is within a month so picking up hop bitterness seems a bit strange to me but it is pretty noticeable. Very smooth feel to this beer. I honestly think this may be better than the tripel.

Look:
Deep chestnut color with garnet highlights. Light tan head with fine bubble texture and great retention. Good clarity even though beer is very dark.

Smell:
Bread crust malt followed by yeast aromas. Slight oxidation, but the bottle is likely a long-time shelf resident at the store of purchase.

Taste:
Dark fruit, like raisin and prune, followed by a slight hop bitterness with noble hop flavors. Spicy yeast phenols with a slight clove-like flavor, and a slight apple ester.

Feel:
Medium-bodied. Delicious. No stringency or creaminess. Some alcoholic warmth.

Overall:
Really nice and a classic for a reason. A fresh bottle would have been nice but this beer still holds up very well.

Pretty grand.
Big abbey depth. All around well brewed beer. Just what you would come to expect from monks making beer in the name of a higher power!
Recommended.

Look:
3-Finger head when poured from a 750ml bottle. It is a cloudy dark brown with a deep tan foam. Quite energetic after pour.

Smell:
Sweet fruit and caramel. Quite rich with chocolate and nutty scents. Very yeasty smelling.

Taste:
Some upfront bitterness that quickly fades to sweet fruit. Fruit flavors are very intense: apple, grape, and a faint peach. As soon as the fruity flavors back off, the chocolate, caramel, coffee, and nut flavors make their appearance. There is a really nice roasted malt flavor that isn't overpowering. The finish is surprisingly dry because the first 2/3 is very sweet. It goes from very sweet at first and just plummets downward to dryness.

Feel:
Full bodied and very fizzy. There is a lot of interesting senses: fizzy, slick and syrupy, and then a dry tug on the taste buds.

Overall:
Very good. It is quite well balanced between bitterness, sweetness, fruitiness, and maltiness. Enjoyed this one immensely and will purchase more in the future. One of the better Dubbels that I have had.

The pour a murky brown color with modest sized dark beige head that is frothy in its texture and the resultant lace a fine velum like sheet to obscure the glass. Nose is lightly tinted with banana, slightly sour, hints of malt. Front is malt laden, and somewhat sweet with the top fair to middling in its feel on the palate. Finish has a prickly acidity and the hops pleasing and delightfully spicy in their bite, the aftertaste is desert bone dry and long lasting, a long favorite and one that has a permanent home in my DBF!

This beer pour a dark chocolate brown from the bottle into my chalice. it has a nice inviting light brown/tan head that sticks around to give you a full nose of the aroma.

The nose on this baby is big, really big. Coffee, floral, spicy.

The taste surprises me, not sure why. It is very stoutish in flavor, with a bit more hops and floralish flavors. Oh, don't forget the toffee and chocolate overtones. I only had one, and I think that was the right number. You don't notice the alcohol.

It tingles the tongue with mild carbonation, and has a pleasant coaty action that sticks with you and warms into a floral hoppiness.

I will buy this beer again, but it's not in my top ten.

L: deep burgundy liquid with a heavy haze... frothy, rocky, khaki-colored foam builds to a good two-finger height, then settles into a thin, uneven cap

S: prune, raisin, (all)spice, tobacco... dark-vinous, perfumy esters, and maybe a hint of black licorice and light molasses... pure ethanol not readily apparent... the overall smell is moderately potent and implies a dense maltiness

T: thread of burnt dark candi sugar up the middle with a brandy-like, though dry fruitiness enveloping... moderate bitter/burnt flavor with subtle metallic and peppery notes lingering in the aftertaste... the malt and more complex sugars do gradually emerge and assert themselves, rounding out it's muddy taste... dumping the yeast slug in is a big plus

F: medium-light body - dense, but slightly attenuated, with little residual viscosity through the finish... soft warmth emanates in back of throat after each sip... carbonation seems relatively lively, lifting the sugars off the tongue, giving the beer a surprising dryness... with the slug in, this edges towards elixir

O: actually quite lovely how dry (and horizontal) it is, making it very much doable with some roasted game meat and oily root veg perhaps... this is something I might buy once every couple years, but it's always been consistently satisfying

A - Densely packed tan head. Clear mahogany colored beer.

S - Smells sweet with a very distinctive, spicy yeast character. Caramel, toffee and a little bubblegum.

T - Very clean, bready malt influence. A slight woody taste. Less subtle than the other trappists, but much more approachable.

M/D - Medium bodied, but a clean, balanced finish. It's actually a challenge to savor the beer because it is so drinkable.

Pours a hazy coca cola colour with a sparkling head that dies down pretty fast, looks pretty flat to be honest.

Smells lightly o raisins and fruit syrup, yeast esters come through with light hint o marzipan, but nothing very prominent.

Taste follow suit, with fruity yeast esters up front, some golden raisins and a hint of green .

Luxurious crisp and sparkling moth feel, mid-bodied and sot.

Dark reddish brown, thick head sticks around briefly without lacing the glass.
Scent and flavors are raisin, prune, malt, banana, nut, caramel, maybe cherry, bready.

At Cafe l'Hooischys (I don't know how to say it, either) in Amsterdam.
Pours a mahogany brown, clear as a bell, with an off-white head that starts out thick but thins out and sticks to the side of the glass. Smells a bit complex. Caramel, toffee, not much alcohol evident. Sharp and clean, nice smell.
Taste is lighter than I expected. So smooth. Very smooth. The malt blends into the hops. Wait, is that hop bitterness? I think so!
Mouthfeel is medium, approachable with great carbonation. Drinkability? If there's any room in your belly, you will want to drink this!
