Atmosphere: live music is just okay. otherwise just an average bar

Quality: dragonmead makes great beers. i have enjoyed both their belgian and english style beers. of which i have had a good amount.

Service: attentive and helpful but nothing perfect

Selection: this is one place i can go and have difficulty ordering because i want so many different things. i could go there on a weekly basis and never get bored

overall: definitely have some of the tastiest beers in michigan and i go every change i get.

Atmosphere - feels like walking back in time to the Renaissance, decorum is all swords, shields and dragons, low lighting level lends to the feeling of being in a castle. Pretty unique atmosphere.

Quality/selection- I have had several of their beers on tap at various bars so I decided to try some of the stuff that I had not had before. I had the crowned Jewels IPA which was not bad but not great a solid B ranked beer, the honey porter B-, Juggernaut B-, and the Russian Imperial stout B. The selection of beers on tap was great with well over 20 beers all made by Dragonmead. However, the quality/variety of the flavors did not blow me away. All of the beers even though they were of different styles had very similar flavor traits it almost seemed like they used the same yeast in all the beers. The beer was above macros in quality but just did not meet my expectations of what a craft brewery should be producing. Stick with Final Absolution if you go here that is their best beer IMHO.

Service- The bartender was friendly, not overly knowledgeable of the beer but friendly and met our needs.

Overall, a slightly mediocre brewery in the flavors they bring to the table but worth checking out if in the area.

Brewpub is located in Warren in an industrial strip-mall type area. Inside, it's decked out in the medieval ware - a little hokey to me. They have a huge selection of beers available, and between four of us we tried about 10 (two different samplers) and they went from bad (probably just me not appreciating the style) to above average. I was slightly disappointed in the quality of the beers we tried. Service was slow, but it was busy. Food was only pretzels and onion rings and small stuff like that. I wouldn't recommend going for the food at all. If you're a fan of the beer, it's worth a stop, but if not, I don't think a visit to the brewery will change your opinion.

It's a small place, but the atmosphere is nice and bar-like.

The quality of the beer is top-notch, and the selection is enormous. I got a flight of 5 (out of 30+ to choose from; the biggest selection I've seen from a brewpub) and they give you a dry-erase card to write the beers you want on, which then sits behind your selections when you get it.

The service was prompt and our server was very knowledgeable when we had questions about a beer and gave recommendations based on what we normally like.

We didn't have any of the food there because there's hardly a selection (my high selection rating is based solely on the huge selection of their own beer, and would have been a 5 if they had more food). However, since they allow pizza deliveries and for people to bring in their own food, I give them credit for that. The beer is probably better because they focus on the beer itself.

Overall, the value is very good. I'd recommend starting with a flight. There's something for everyone with their selection.

Hehe. It's kind of funny in Dragonmead. It has the whole medieval thing going on, but from my point of view, it's entirely too clean in there. I mean, it's almost pristine kinda clean in there. It somewhat doesn't fit imo. But it's a pretty chill vibe. And, shocking as it may seem, these guys have more beer choices than Kuhnhenn. Yes. It's true. Food is kind of bar nibbling kind of stuff. I must say that the opportunity to dine of venison sausages is always welcome in my book. Or any other non-traditional meats, for that matter.

Walking into this place, I was sure to be greeted by a court jester. Kind of a kids type amusement place, but hey whatever works. The service was very slow even though the crowd was thin. Small selection of snack type food so don't come hungry. They did have a wide selection of beer styles that are average in taste. Not really a destination for beer geeks like me. The medival theme seems like a gimmick but if it gets people into craft beer, so be it. I would prefer they concentrate on fewer beers with better quality then such a vast selection of average ones.

They do an excellent job crafting beers from all over the world using ingredients that the native brewers would use. You must try the ring of fire if you like spicy things.

The food sucks but you can bring in something else or have a pizza delivered.

To the guy below who said Sherwood or even black lotus *cough* are better than Dragonmead I'm sure most locals would disagree.

If you find yourself here you should also check out Kuhnhenns which is only about 5 miles away, they're another top notch operation.

Stop #228 on my world brewery tour.

Located in a nondescript building on an interstate access road. Almost feels like you're headed into an auto parts distributor shop. The medieval interior reminded me of the Excalibur hotel and casino in Vegas.

Dragonmead has more beers than any other brewery I've ever visited. The best part is they are all well done. Our group of three shared a couple five beer samplers where you write the beers in ink on glossy stock so you don't ruin your sampler memento - excellent touch. We had...

Sampler 3
IPA, raspberry wheat, barleywine, Baltic porter, rauchbier

Sampler 1
Kolsch, nagelweiss, apricot wheat, hot pepper ale, cream ale

Sampler 2
trippel, abbey, quad grand cru, Belgian dark strong, golden (Belgian strong I think).

You can peek in and see the brewing operation on the way to the bathroom. It looked as if they did a lot of smaller batches.

The only downside to the place was the spotty service during our visit around 2:00 on a Friday. The bartender kept disappearing but did a fine job when she was there.

I would definitely recommend Dragonmead for any Michigan brewery tour.

This was the third stop on our Microbrewery tour and literally had no idea what to expect. We walked in and I was shocked with how cool the interior to this place was. Loved all the tap handles which they had a TON of with all different styles of beer.

One of the women that was working there gave my dad and I along with a few others that were in the brewery a behind the scene tour of the brewery. She brought us all over, and even let us try different types of malts. Which I have never gotten to try before which was great. She was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions.

I even got a chance to try to first Chipolte ale which I was pretty nervous to try. Over all I totally enjoyed it was well as the other 5 beers I got a chance to sample! If your ever in the area I highly recommend that you stop in and have a drink! Cheers guys loved the whole operation!

cool little place i stopped at on my trip in MI.

Like an old mess hall at a castle, this place was decorated with old brick, armor, flags and fun! The people here knew their beers for sure and the amount of stuff they had on tap that they brew in house as a ratio of how large the place is was mind blowing. Tons of great stuff on the menu. complimentary pretzels and mustard to keep you from getting smashed (and they were a nice break in between brews too to cleanse the palette).

Overall, a great place. We didn't order food here, but it is also bring your own food if you like...cool concept since a lot of places get mad at you for doing this.

Fun, would go again and highly recommend.

Great place, very unique atmosphere. Exactly what you would hope a place called "dragonmead" would look like- swords and midevil paraphernalia all over the place. Impressive amount of beers on tap, close to 25 I believe. Service was ok, food was bar food- got a decent burger with fries. Beer was great, and as I said, a great selection. We were able to get a sampler flight of 6 beers for about 10 bucks, so pretty reasonably proced for the quality of beer you get. Would highly recommend a visit to this place, very cool.

a great place to go on week day afternoons on my day off, the feel is very warming, cross between a family restaurant at a renaissance fair and a pub at the same fair, the beer is usually good if not great, and the wait staff has always been friendly and prompt. the variety of beer is normally pretty vast and the in house made pop is also a nice touch for the DD, never ordered any food from there so i cant speak on that. price wise you never feel like you were screwed over when you walk out. also the regulars i see there are more times than not kind people and some great conversations can be had

A few miles from my house, consider this to be my favorite place to grab an exceptional pint or 6 on the weekend. The selection is beyond stellar, with over 30 different styles. Pricing is on point, 4-5.50$ a pint, with the 6 sampler tray at 10.50$. The atmosphere is relaxed, pub/medieval feel inside. I enjoy the staff very much, always making sure you have pretzels, and your glass is never empty. Overall Dragonmeade brewery is an awesome place to grab some even more awesome craft. Only complaint would be the 11pm closing time!

Stopped here and was suprised by the extensive selection of beers. Figured out where to stay nearby and did two flights of beers... something that probably never happened before at a brewery because there usually aren't 10-15 beers I must try. The line up was great and had to buy a sixer of the Tripel. The atmosphere was somewhat laid back and lighting dark, which almost made me wonder if I was going to run into a friar at some point. Service was good but had to be to deliver two flights. I would most certainly stop here again if for nothing else than to sample their extensive list of beers. It's like a beer tasting sitting down.

Our last stop on the Detroit Brewery crawl.

Located off an entrance road to 496 Dragonmead seems out of place. Small parking lot with a simple storefront. Upon entering I felt like I was in the bedroom of a D&D obsessed 14-yr old. They've really gone crazy with the medieval kitsch (Check out the painting in the men's room to prove my point). Otherwise there's a somewhat cozy pub feel.

Loads of brews on tap (50+) which wasn't matched on any of our previous 9 stops. Not to mention a plethora of styles by country. Samplers (10.50 but large samples) consisted of 6 beers picked from the lot. I went with the Breath of the Dragon Bitter, Kaisers Kolsch, Inquisition Pale Ale, Holy Smoke Rauchbier, and their Russian Imperial Stout. The Kolsch was dead-on with great Pils flavor and late hop aroma with a crisp finish. The Rauchbier was a mess with over-done smoke with a watery mouthfeel. The others were decent but forgettable. I've had their Final Absolution previously so I know they can brew but my 6 weren't entirely impressive.

Food was prepacked frozen fried tidbits that at the time were just arriving from some bulk-sales type store. Regardless, we ordered sweet potato bites and jalapeno poppers which weren't great. Service was friendly.

Definitely the most unique place I've been in Michigan. That said, the beers I sampled were mediocre. Don't eat there unless you want to overpay for pre-frozen snacks. Is it a must-go? No, but if you're in the area stop in and try a beer as there is no shortage of variety.

Reviewed on 6/20/2010.

Stopped by here on a Saturday night. It is right off the highway. There are a lot of taps (~40) but this place is definitely more about quantity vs. quality. We tried a couple of samplers plus a few pints and all the beers were mediocre at best. The atmosphere and service were alright. Although it was a Saturday night, the bar was not completely packed and it probably was only mostly full because there was a special event going on. If you have extra time you could stop here, but there are better nearby brewpubs with higher quality beers (ie Rochester Mills, Sherwood, Black Lotus) that I much preferred to Dragonmead. I didn't try any of the food but there is a limited menu.

Ok, I have to stretch my memory a bit to review this place, but I think I can do it. I recall the bar area being neat looking with all of the various taps as you walk in. The one thing that will stick in my mind is the fact that I had the best pepper beer I've ever had here.

The bar is elongated so the bar seems to be at one and, seating at the other. The food is average, but the people were friendly. This is pretty reasonable as pricing goes.

Overall, worth a stop. Check it off your brewery list...it won't be the best place you've visited, but definitely not the worst either. I'd go back just for another pepper beer!

Dragonmead is a great establishment for beer lovers in Metro Detroit. They have a huge selection, and focus on beer, not food or location.

I'd purchased Dragonmead products for years at local market before venturing to their brewpub a few weeks ago. They're located in an industrial area on a freeway access road... you'd have to really be looking for this spot to know it's there. We were surprised when we entered... the brewpub is fairly nicely decorated and more spacious than we had envisioned... a 2-man band even had space to set up and play for the regulars (who started packing the place about 8PM on Saturday).

They have many (~20-30) of their own beers on tap. I tried many of them as samplers. Quality varies... I generally thought the Belgian-type ales were the best. It's great to have so much selection, although I would prefer a bit smaller selection but better overall quality.

The kitchen serves a some basic foods and snacks, but "bring-your-own-food" is allowed and encouraged. Great concept... I saw a table have a carry-out pizza delivered to a table on my 2nd trip to Dragonmead.

Overall, this is a nice spot with an expansive selection, a great crowd of real beer-lovers, and they have a number of solid-quality beers. I'll return many times.

Dragonmead occupies a unique space in an industrail mall on the I-696 Service drive. The decor is renaissance fair chic. Even if that is not your style it still works.

The sheer variety of their own craft beer is the draw here. They have multiple styles form varying regions of the world. They do not do interpretations of styles, but rather do a spot on example of the styles they are brewing. They have limited food service but do allow take out from nearby resturants. Service has always been great.

Stopped by here on my recent trip to Michigan.
Very cool decor and the interior is open and spacious. Nice medieval decorations and props. Nice, lengthy bar which is spaced away from the dining/sitting area. Two complete walls of taps. Greeted at the bar with a beer menu and a basket of pretzels and mustard for dipping.
Picked up the paper menu and saw a couple offerings that I would like to try. Then proceeded to open up the menu and find two more even more full pages of beers! All broken down by style and with complete info on all of them. I love that aspect. I ordered a sampler because there were so many beers I wanted to taste, but didn't have the time nor the liver to try them all. All the beers were solid and impressive. I would love to have a place like this near me. Wonderful friendly service and atmosphere, solid beers. Picked up a bottle of their Grand Cru to drink when I get home. Would most definitely return to Dragonmead on my next trip to Michigan.

Pretty reasonable priced and huge selection of beers. Had a final absolution, which is a great belgian IMO. We got a couple samplers, which was a good deal. Came here after a weeding reception that was dry with 4 other couples, many of which did not drink micros and they all had a good time and enjoyed the beer. I think the huge selection helped. The Ring of Fire was something else, wouldnt say it was good, but worth a try in a sampler. They told me they put habaneros in it and I believe it. Overall a nice place, good beer, service and atmosphere.

Dragonmead has it all. Good Beer, A Huge Selection, and a Creepy dragon painting with a naked lady in the mens bathroom!

Some of the beers are pretty mediocre though. I feel sometimes they focus on quantity over quality. The prices are can also be a bit steep for what you're getting. The sampler tray is a steal though. The service is usually pretty good, sometimes slower than it should be if they're busy, but the staff is always friendly. If it's on tap try the Ring of Fire. It tastes like fucking Nacho Cheese.

Visited on 10-18-08

Was headed to Warren for a family party, and figured I'd leave early and hit up a couple of local breweries. First stop was Dragonmead, and judging from the few mediocre beers they sell at the store, I was not expecting much. The place was almost completely empty when we got there, which isn't a bad thing, with football on in the corner, and a dimly-lit, pleasant medieval them to the decor. The service was decent, it seemed to take awhile to get a waitress, even though there was one other customer, but it wasn't a problem. The best thing about Dragonmead though, is the taplist. They must have had about 35 beers on tap, in every style you can think of. I had an abbey ale, which was very good, and got a growler of imperial stout to take home (which was awesome). We didn't have much time, so our stay was short, but I really look forward to going here in the future.

I made a road trip down to the Warren area with some friends and this was the first stop. On a Saturday afternoon the place was pretty calm and we had absolutely no trouble finding a table. The interior was pretty dark, but had plenty of windows and there were a lot of flags hanging off the wall inside. The tap line-up was amazing, I didn't really realize until I got there how many beers Dragonmead makes, considering the beers that are distributed. I was very happy with the Imperial Stout and even got a growler of it. The service was decent, pretty attentive and there were multiple waitresses/ bartenders taking care of us. I also loved that it was no smoking. I will be going back.

Stopped in with 3 other BA's on the way to Madison for Great Taste.

Not much to look at from the outside but once you walk through the doors...Bam! Beer Nirvana!

Passable job of decorating the interior with an English Middle Ages feel. Nice game area with darts and table seating to the left and a long bar to the right.

Ok, so what can you say about a place that offers 38 different home brewed micros on tap? Well, plenty if they were all crap but, they are far from that!

Thirty-eight freakin' taps...including a few cask selections....CRAZY! Plus, they make their own soda...in 6 different flavours!

The beers we ordered and shared were all good or better....a credit to the brewers for becoming successful at so many styles.

Nice to have brews offered in a lovely sampler platter, in half-pints or full pints....I took advantage of the half-pint offerings.

No food today....and they dont offer much....but enough to fill your stomach to keep you drinking!

Our server was pleasant and helpful. We never waited long between finishing one beer and starting the next.

Dragonmead is a beer stop in southeast Michigan that should not be missed. With Kuhnhenn being less than 10 minutes away these two locations make a fantastic one-two punch!
