Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
This 8% abv stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our Brewers, who value the mouth watering intensity of its roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention it's excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting this same special stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we're making it available for general release in America.

L: finger and a 1/2 tall tan, spongy foam, collapsing into a messy-bubbly, chunky collar and smeared sudsy film cap atop a murky dark brown liquid

S: dark bitter chocolate, powdered black licorice, espresso, hint of peppermint... second whiff reveals emerging, extra-rich prune and black currant aromas.... last thing I'm getting is a sort of black strap molasses taffy note up the middle... cannot wait to taste this!

T: the molasses and licorice peel off to reveal more of a 'malty' malt flavor with the hefty base malt and the rich, dark melanoidins of the character malt shining through without much impedance from any bitterness or flavor from the hops and roasted barley, which are there, but in sedate supporting role... hint of a dry, deeper burnt toffee note clinging to the bottom... I dare say there's a bit of a caramelized barrel char note that also gently creeps up atop the tongue, while a subtle hint vanilla surfaces on its sides... the alcohol is moderately apparent and does seem to enhance and extend some of the malt sweetness

F: lightly foamy atop, with a light airiness underneath those suds, while a subtly silty, oily viscosity billows along the bottom... the back end of its body drops off quietly, while the mellow heat of the alcohol takes longer to burn away... a ghostly bit of chub settles in the inner cheeks below the teeth; superfine residual sediment yanking the tastebuds maybe

O: fantastic - could this beer be too streamlined??... I've long been a fan of their Foreign Extra, and this seems like a Grand Cru version, who knows... thank you to the guy at Total Wine who let me wrench this one bottle from a 4-pack, I'm coming back to pick up the other 3

11.2oz bottle poured into a pint glass shows a midnight black body and floats a persistent tight bubbled tan colored head of foam leaving a webbed chain of lacing.

Aroma is roasty goodness and smoke that hints of stone fruit.

Flavor is smoked roasty barley, with a metallic undertone I blame on the carbonation. A roast aftertaste clamors for another sip.

Mouthfeel is a buoyant medium and a wet finish.

Overall a well crafted stout. Perfect for a roaring fire and a close friend.

I am so glad I got the 200th anniversary 12er, this offering alone made it worth it...

A beautifully dark beer with the patented tan foam, high and tight. It had a touch of lacing with a head that had just a bit of staying power. The mouthfeel was more carbonated than I preferred to start with but it did feel creamier than when it warmed. The smell was a light blend of chocolate, coffee notes, and a hint of roasted malts - a very nice combo. Taste-wise I simply enjoyed this beer - distinct, yet not overwhelming chocolate, malt, and coffee flavors all blending well with the 8% ABV - special in my book. Certainly this was an exceptional offering out of their 12er for the 200th anniversary.

Pours black with a tan head, with red hues on edges. Smell is roasted malt and smoke. Taste is similar. The smell and taste makes me think of a fireplace. I can taste the firewood. Mouthfeel is medium for a stout. Overall, favorite Guinness so far.

My least favorite in a Guinness taste testing along with the Foreign Extra Stout and 200th Anniversary. Slightly more sour than the others with less chocolate and coffee flavor. I'd heard good things about this one but it was average at best.

11.2oz bottled June 2017 poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 8% ABV. The beer pours dense very dark brown with chocolate tan colored head. The head quickly recedes to a fine ring and sprinkle of bubbles. The aroma is a pronounced sweet cherry chocolate. The taste is more of the same with a semisweet cherry and chocolate sliding to a tangy dry finish. There are bits of dark dried fruit and roast malt tastes that are interwoven in the flavor. Mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied, adequately carbonated, a bit chalky & dry. Overall, excellent. I have always been a fan of Guinness FES and like this version even more. I would love to have steady access to this fresh. Recommended.

Appearance: Pours black with foamy off-white suds and light, thin lace.

Aroma: Caramel roasty, sweet, smoky.

Taste: Big sticky sweet, with notes of chocolate, smoked malts, and fruit underneath it all. Finishes with an almost licorice taste. Really a pretty solid stout here, with the 8% ABV hidden nicely. My favorite of the 200 Year Anniversary Mix pack.

Super dark brown that looks black, huge frothy head. Aroma is good, maybe a little light, roasted malt, cream, oat, faint milk chocolate. Taste isn't very robust or explosive, which is tefreshing cause so many beers nowadays wanna pound you into submission. You get good flavor but it is still very drinkable & you could have 2 or 3 without getting overwhelmed. Chocolate malts, dark roasted malt, whispetrs of coffee & chicory,, vanilla creme & medium oats. Body is a little light, like normal guinness, guess maybe it would be fuller cause of the abv & flavor.

Aroma of roasted grain, chocolate, and smoke.
Taste of sweet chocolate smoke/peat.

A crisper stout with subtle chocolate tones, and a slight roasted malt throughout.
