Style: Foreign / Export Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This 8% abv stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our Brewers, who value the mouth watering intensity of its roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention it's excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting this same special stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we're making it available for general release in America.

This is different from Guinness Extra Stout in a few ways. First, it has a smokier taste. Second, it has a higher ABV (8%), which makes for a stronger alcohol taste with less balance. Third, it is traditionally carbonated as opposed to using nitrogen. It is worth trying if you like Guinness, but I would choose Extra Stout if given a choice.

Very dark brown clear colour. Black treacle nose, roasty notes, earthy hop notes, and dark fruits. Heavier, very toasty throughout. Burnt grains and black treacle body, minerals, dark fruit notes, bitter burnt lingering drier finish. Very nice.

A nice addition from Guinness. Think Belgian dark version of a Guinness Stout. Nice to enjoy when you want a Guinness but with some sweeter chocolate and cherry notes.

Beer pours black with a light head. The smell for me was banana and milk chocolate. The flavor is chocolate, some coffee and yes banana. The beer is smooth goes down real easy. Overall a nice offering.

Poured from a 11.2oz bottle into glass.
Very dark brown to black colored body. Some brown highlights when presented to glass. Creamy, khaki colored head. Some sheets of lacing on opposite side of the glass.
Aromas of dark chocolate/cocoa, dark strong coffee, toffee to molasses sweetness, and slightly sour dark fruits.
Taste is generally sweet, with some minor sour dark fruit additions at the end. Dark chocolate and coffee. Some sweetness from the toffee/molasses.
Creamy smooth, medium mouth feel. Rather dry.
A sweeter Guinness stout recipe.

When compared to Guinness '200th Anniversary Export Stout', the 'Antwerpen' is lighter (more brown than black in its body color), has a lighter colored head (khaki to tan), has more lasting lacing, is much sweeter and with more dark fruit, and is more creamy in mouth feel. Both about the same medium mouth feel.

It pours very dark black with a tan head. Some nice lacing. The aroma is fairly complex, with notes of burnt bread, caramel, coffee, syrup, dark chocolate, bread pudding and dark malts. The taste is surprisingly sweet, but somewhat balanced degree by a roasted/burnt bitterness. Very chewable and thick. Creamy mouthfeel with no harsh carbonation bite at all. A very nice stout.

Taste follows. Chocolate, dark fruits, plum, raisin, roasted malts.
Body is a tad thin.
Pretty good beer.
