Style: Foreign / Export Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This 8% abv stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our Brewers, who value the mouth watering intensity of its roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention it's excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting this same special stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we're making it available for general release in America.

A rich, high-ABV Belgian-style stout that's supposedly been brewed since the end of WW2 and is available just now for the first time in the US.

Pours a viscous, very dark black with a wonderfully large and retentive brown head.

Smells very sweet and malty with big nodes of chocolate and ripe fruit. Very smooth with nothing betraying the relatively high ABV.

Tastes really good. Not as assertive as you might assume, but very well done. The hops are toned way down from regular Guinness or the Foreign Extra Stout, and a lack of any booze burn allows the rich malt nodes to really shine. Chocolate, ripe fruit, and light butterscotch dominate throughout, starting dry and getting gradually sweeter as the sip progresses, with a lingering finish that's the distillation of what you want out of a stout grain bill.

The Guinness name and relatively accessible price point might turn away some snobs, but this is actually a wonderful beer.

Pours a dark fudge color with a thick creamy beige colored head that settles very slowly into a frothy mass, just a great creamy looking head.A mix of mocha coffee aromas mixed with some underlying fruits.Love the creamy feel of the beer,no harsh edges with an almost airy quality to it.Coffee and chocolate upfront on the palate with slight char and licorice in the finish, not an in your face flavored export stout like way to many are. This on a nitro pour would be very dangerous for me,as is I wish I would have bought more.

looks like a classic guinness, depending how you pour it, a nice frothy slightly tan head..
the smell is roasty, creamy, slightly sour & alchoholy (might not be a word lol)
for me it taste pretty similar to the guinness extra stout, but seemed a little more bitter, and more roasty call my crazy but would prefer it a tad bit sweeter.
mouthfeel is again similar to classic guinness nice and creamy...overall its not bad, but with so many craft beers out there im not sure if i'd pick it up again.

Pours dark brown with a very heady 3 inches of pillowy foam. Almost thought it was infected the way it poured, but it's just overcarbonated.

Aroma of roasted malt, faint peat smoke, perhaps a bit bready.

The taste has cocoa, dark roasted malts, coffee and light alcohol. Faint hops round out a light bodied, toasty stout. Medium carbonation which works for a beer like this.

Overall it's another solid stout from Guinness, not a surprise.

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle into pint glass in January 2017. There is a batch code on the label, but I did not see any brewed on or drink by dates on the bottle. Not sure if the 09:28 in the code is the date or time of bottling.

Appearance: Deep black with smooth dark tan head about 2 fingera high. Beer is thick and not hazy. Head leaves a nice thick lacing on the glass, long after it is drunk.

Smell: There is roasted malts, some sweetness like chocolate, and some hops. I like that each of the aromas is balanced, and one is not over powering.

Taste: Nice mix of roasted malts and coffee flavors. There is a little bitterness from the hops and some chocolate flavor as well. I also get just a little hint of caramel. There is a moderate alcohol bite as well. The aftertaste lasts a moderate amount of time.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium to strong alcohol level, which confirms the 8.0% on the bottle. There is some creaminess to the mouthfeel.

This is a very smooth and creamy stout. It is nice mix of flavors and aromas. Interesting version of a stout, I would buy this again.

Poured from the bottle, into a Funky Buddha snifter.

Frothy, khaki colored head that stands 1 finger tall.Dark black / brown in color, with no light showing through the glass.Carbonation is hard to detect.

On the nose I get mostly roasted malts, and dark chocolate.I also get some smokey notes in there.

The palate follows the nose, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and some smoke.Im getting a little bit of toffee and caramel also.

The body is bordering heavy and medium, with a smooth finish.

This is a damn good stout.A little heavier, and more flavorful than their extra stout.Nice beer.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's an inch of dense creamy brown head. Heavy lacing. I'm smelling dark malt and plum. The taste is dark malt and plum. The mouth is dry and light chewy.

L-Black...minimal head

S-Roasted malt...sweet..some brown sugar and molasses...coffee...dark chocolate.

T-Rich roasted malts with dark chocolate and coffee. A hint of smoke is there and a lingering sweet/sour type of thing on the finish.

F-Full bodied but not immense. Velvety texture. Very drinkable despite the body and abv.

O-Excellent Export Stout that could sneak up on you quick as this drinks pretty easy.

Pour is black with amber foamy head and sticky lacing. Smells of sugary coffee with some chocolate notes and little oat.
Taste is nice, you get a mild coffee, chocolate, little dry fruit, and some burnt oats. There is a mild alcohol presence and mild dryness but overall a pleasant beer. I would rate this one as a strong brother to Guinness, some similar items involved but its own person, good beer.

Good beer. Its like guinness extra with more booze and a dark fruit like aftertaste. I ran through a four pack on a friday night and I would gladly pick up another!

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

L: Inky black pour. Two fingers of thick tannish head leaves respectable lacing.

S: Coffee and roast... dark sugars

T/F: Expected roast character... surprisingly sweet with dark fruit notes and hints of coffee and cocoa. Lots going on here and surprisingly complex. Mouthfeel is robust and thick... almost creamy. Leaves an off-sweet aftertaste... mellowed by some hopping.

O: Much better than I was expecting from a Guinness product, and tastes nothing like their flagship Irish Stout. On the sweet side, so this falls into the 'dessert beer' category for me but one I'd definitely drink again.
