This 8% abv stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our Brewers, who value the mouth watering intensity of its roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention it's excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting this same special stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we're making it available for general release in America.

11.2oz bottle into SA perfect pint glass.

A: Pours a deep darker than cola brown with a couple fingers of very dense light brown head. The head took forever to slowly fade into a thick and lasting fuzzy collar that left a thick network of impressive lacing down the glass.
S: Ashy, smoky, nose with notes of tobacco smoke, savory barbeque smoke, chicory, and slight sulfur.
T: More of a roasted and toasted grain quality to the flavor than it is pure smoke like the nose. Still, there is a subtle smoky undertone throughout the flavor. Roasted malt flavors up front followed by sweet and sticky flavors of molasses and slight caramel. Savory, meaty, smoke and slightly acrid flavors round out the finish, and I get a hint of chocolate and chicory lingering in the aftertaste. Mild spice.
M: Dense, softy, and creamy carbonation that really froths up on my palate. Full body, chewy and thick mouthfeel, moderate bitterness.
O: The aftertaste was like a lighter version of the taste that lingers after smoking a cigarette. Thick, chewy, and drinkable, but probably not something I’ll revisit.

11.2oz bottle purchased somewhere in the greater Spokane area, most likely either Huckleberry's or one of the Total Wines. Can't remember what I paid for it. No obvious freshness date, just some sort of code on the rear label: L619OGF0003.

Poured into an Iron Goat snifter, this was lovely to look at. So dark brown as to be virtually black, with a big, creamy tan head that took it's time dropping and left lots of lace on the sides of the glass.

Initially the nose was of toasted dark malts, like one would expect from an Irish dry stout. As it warmed, an odd, sugary sweet aroma took over, eventually dominating the aroma entirely.

The flavor was an odd mix of traditional, dry stout flavors such as dark roasted, restrained coffeeish bitterness and a strange, somewhat off putting burnt sugary thing that reminded me of burnt marshmallows and candy. These did not meld together all that well. There's also a little bit of alcoholic heat. Finish is bitter, dry and slightly reminiscent of elderly noughat.

Creamy, light mouthfeel that hides the fact that it's an 8% stout quite well.

Many years ago I really would have loved a chance to try the Belgian Guinness. Haven't been a Guinness fanboy for a long time now, and this isn't doing much to bring me back. It's an overly sweet booze bomb that tastes like artificial sweet flavors were added with a heavy hand. It's not awful, but it's definitely not my thing.

Nice appearance, with a jet black body and a light tan head, which has good retention an deposits globs of lacing on the glass. Dry roasted grain aroma mixing in with cocoa. The taste is fine, but by no means spectacular. Kinda reminds me of a slightly amped up Irish dry stout. Prominent oak and stale coffee flavours, mixed in with cocoa powder. Some hints of fruit and sugar, but overall very dry. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. Alcohol isn't even perceptible.

This didn't really impress me that much. While it is a decent beer its not in the same class as other foreign/export stouts, and it didn't have the richness of flavour I look for.

A - Pours black with 2 inches of tan head, which leaves some rings of lacing as it falls.

S - Chocolate, coffee, roast malt, alcohol

T - Large amount of roast malts at first, with some chocolate and coffee coming through. Alcohol warmth comes through in the aftertaste.

M - Creamy, full, smooth, surprising amount of carbonation.

D - Much better than the original and worth a try.

I have had a good several days as a customer at The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop here in Lancaster, PA. They took delivery of a bunch of new & different beers on Thursday & our crew of (usually) Friday evening knuckleheads swooped in to procure them.

From the bottle: "A rich and robust Stout"; "First brewed in 1944 for export from Dublin to Antwerp."; "The Brewers Project"; "A group of enterprising brewers on a quest to explore new recipes, reinterpret old ones and collaborate freely to bring exciting beers to life. This 8% ABV Stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our own brewers, who value the mouth watering intensity of its roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention its excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting this same special Stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we're making it available for general release in America."

I Pop!ped the cap and began a moderate pour, but as soon as I saw the pseudo-cascade begin, I backed off to allow it to do its thing. That turned out to be the creation of three-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration and showing cola highlights only on the bottom edges of the glass. Nose smelled of dark chocolate, light smoke and treacle, but not terribly different from other Foreign/Export Stouts. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but close. The taste very much mirrored the nose - bittersweet chocolate, smoky charcoal and the tart, off-sweetness of treacle. Finish was semi-dry, very much of bittersweet chocolate & treacle with a light, lingering smokiness. Not bad, but does it merit the hype of bringing it to the U.S. for the first time? Eh. I can find Guinness Foreign Export pretty easily as it is, so the arrival of this one does not really trip my trigger.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's an inch of dense creamy brown head. Heavy lacing. I'm smelling dark malt and plum. The taste is dark malt and plum. The mouth is dry and light chewy.

Black porter looking beer with a thin tan head. Roasty nose with some burnt edges. Tastes like regular Guinness with more body, more roast, added baking chocolate, and not as much sour tang - almost none in fact except where the bitterness of the roasted malts come into play. Not unlike an imperial stout, but perhaps on the milder side of that.

Looks delicious, deep brown to black, really compact head, tight bubbles. Didn't like the aroma so much (oily, buttery mollasses. Fat toffee and roast, thick and rich. Very long roasty finish, quite bitter. Some mollases and raisins aswell, very thick mouthfeel. Beautiful rich, bitter chocolate finish. A beautifully rich stout.

Take your normal Guinness and put it on steroids. Darker. Thicker. Sweeter. Then make it only availible in Belgium and (where I found it) West Germany to torment beer drinkers everywhere else, and you have Guinness Special Export.

Coloring is almost completely black, with a strong tan head. Scent is pretty much identical to taste in every way, strong but not overpowering, dark fruits, coffee, chocolate. This beer is thick and creamy, to the point that it severely hurts the drinkability. Nice to sit down with one and relax, but this is by no means an every day sipper or a drink to get drunk sort of beer.

Thank you Abusmaster. Jet black with substantial off-white creamy head. Good malty and licorice and roasted barley aroma. Taste is dry and bitter, baker's chocolate, with diesel fuel and smoke at the end of the bottle. Easy creamy mouthfeel while you absord this dry stout, Certainly better than any Guinness I have had, far from the best stout.

Pours dark blackish brown, opaque. Thinnish tan head dissipates steadily leaving no lacing and a thin filmy slick on top of the beer. Smell has notes of malt, lactose, chocolate, and milk chocolate. Taste follows the nose. Flavor has notes of roasted malts, lactose, milk chocolate, and cocoa. Mild hop bitterness on the back end. Feel is thin for the style. Smooth with medium carbonation. Overall I didn't think this was anything special. Its just another variation on the same basic theme.

i think its really cool that these guys have after all this time, decided to brew up (and/or release) a few new beers and get them out there, and i have liked the ones i have had better than expected. this one is a really different sort of stout, with some belgian elements, some funny mouthfeel components, and a lot of cool guinness grainy roast to it. not much of a head on the pour from the bottle, but a nice shiny near black liquid still looks inviting. aroma is a little bit of almost intentional oxidation, not the wet cardboard thing, but a maturity, not staleness, of the grain that always seems to mark some of these imports. lots of roast here, but very little perceived bitterness, slight dried fruit, ash, and an aged earthy hop. there is also a neat yeast to this, maybe sort of belgian, hard to tell though the stouty nature of this overall, but there certainly seems to be some fruitiness and brightness from the yeast, but it also has a more classic guinness yeast factor, maybe multiple pitches or just temperature variances to bring more flavor out of it, but i like it a lot, and its definitely unique in that regard. it doesnt need to be acidic in the finish, which it is a little bit, but in general i think this is pretty darn solid. neat to see some innovation from a brewery like this too!
