Sampled on draught in some gastro pub somewhere. Quite a foamy white head with a body that is golden orange, medium-high carbonation. Smell quite cidery and a little chemical. Taste is quite malty with quite a bitter aftertaste for the style, it's like an IPA only less sweet and less thick. Finish is crisp with some lingering sweetness. I like this beer enough and much prefer it to the black water that is this brewery's more famous offering.

Big fan of Guinness, never had this before. Also I have never had an Irish lager!

Looks impressive, lots of alive foamy head that stays in the glass for a while. Hoppy fresh aroma, out-does most lagers in terms of aroma definitely!

I'm impressed. Nothing like Guinness, except a smoothness and faint hoppy aftertaste that reminds me of it somehow.

Lots of complexity in the hops. Nothing is over-powering, all hops elements and the Irish malt balance perfectly to create a quite bitter, complex lager.

330ml bottle, poured into pint shaker.

A: Golden, clear, tiny thin head which disappeared straight away, didn't leave any lacing.

S: British style earthy malts, hints of sour apples.

T: Earthy, tangy, notes of slightly sour berries.

M: Low to moderate carbonation, medium body.

O: Combined elements of an English style Bitter with a euro style pale lager.

New in the supermarket shelf in Germany. I thought "might be some kind of IPA, let`s try". Usually they don`t sell much IPA style beers here.
It seems to be a hybrid between IPA and Lager, and luckily it doesn`t taste like some of those heavily overhopped IPA s that smell like grapefruit juice and give you the worst alcohol and hop-hangover for days.
This one has the IPA feeling without the aggressive hop dominance of the hardcore IPAs, and you can drink more than 2 without being drunk (5% alcohol it says on my bottle).
Goes very well with dark rye sour dough bread and cheese.

Smell is overpowering, similar to an orange scented air freshener. A horrid almost metallic after taste and I am unable to taste any malt in this beer whatsoever. Hop House 13 is apparently brewed using galaxy hops, I say apparently as I have tasted galaxy hopped beers before and they taste nothing like this Frankenstein offering from Guinness!

Hoppy Yeaster Sunday (2020) to all of my beer & bread peeps! The dough has risen! I am continuing to purge the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody/L'Abbaye de ChANdler while The CANQuest (tm) waits patiently in abeyance. If there was a silver lining to the COVID-19 cloud, it is my quarantine with all of this beer to be drank!

From the Bottle: "Hop House 13 Lager"; "The Brewers Project"; "Named after a early 1900's hop store building at the Guinness Brewery, St. James's Gate, Ireland. Hop House 13 is a premium-crafted, double-hopped and brewed with Irish barley. The combination of three types of hops delivers a uniquely fresh hop aroma and unique flavor with hints of apricot and peach."

I Pop!ped the cap & started a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass for no reason other than I was still a wee tad groggy after a nap. It foamed nicely to form two fingers of fizzy, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with limited retention. Color was Amber to Deep-Amber/Light-Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. The nose had a sweetish, malt-driven quality, but my first thoughts were honey & vanilla, not "apricot & peach". Okay. Mouthfeel was medium, solid for a Lager. The taste of honey was definitely there and I'll take their apricot while becoming unsure about my vanilla. If nothing else, it was clean & adjunct-free. Finish was more towards semi-dry than semi-sweet, although it was close. It left me with white wine flavors & now I could see where they were coming from with peach, but I stand by vanilla, at least on the finish. I only wish that they had named it something else since it set me up to expect a greater hops presence. Just my $0.02 as usual. YMMV. All 5s? Try all 4s!

A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that left a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of pale malts are present in the nose along with hints of floral hops.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of pale malts with notes of floral and grassy hops. There is a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and both clean and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This lager does a good job at subtly combining in the hops and the malts.

On tap in Ireland. Clear golden color with white head. Smells of lager yeast and floral hops. Light feel. Pretty dry taste with light malt and spicy hop flavors. Decent among macro lagers, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Pint at the gravity bar.
Brilliantly clear deep gold in color with a thin white head.
Bready crackery maltiness with bits of floral spicy citrus hop.
This was everywhere in Ireland and was a good choice when there wasn't something more interesting and your were tired of Guinness stout.

When you’re in Ireland or anywhere in Europe, your palate HAS to change. Hop House 13 was the only beer that kept me from throwing all beers into the bay over there. God bless Hop House 13.

Looks dark for a lager! Smells similar to...an IPA? Unfortunately, taste does not quite live up to the promise of the look and smell. Not bad at all for a lager though. Mouthfeel is pretty thin. High carbonation. Dry finish. As lagers go this is one of the better ones. Highly sessionable. This will be my go-to lager for awhile.

Review: 500 ml bottle of Hop House Lager 13: 4.1% vol.

Have had this on tap and thought it wasn’t too bad to be fair to Guinness, so let's see what it’s like at home from the bottle.

Comes in a very nice dark brown bottle, with a very eye catching “13” logo on show in red lettering, this double hopped lager definitely stands out.

My bottle said 4.1% while on most reviews I see 5%. Bought it in Ireland where our government dont trust us with strong alcohol.

Also from the bottle we can see that it is “named after the 100 year old building where hops are still stored at St James Gate”.

Looks like a regular lager, small white head with a clear golden yellow colour. Head dies a little but does stick around a while.

Overall it looks ok, not bad, looks nourishing!

The smell is strong enough, a real lagery smell on the nose, quite strong. I am getting fresh hops, citrus, with a good bit of passion fruits. Stronger on the nose than what a regular lager tends to be be. Promising!

On the taste found it very, very hoppy. Well it is called hop house, but wasn’t expecting a “lager” to be so bitter. More an IPA really than a regular lager, I guess that’s all that double hopping then!!
Lagery taste on the fringes, the grainy malts there, but this is hop filled to the max.

Bit dry in the mouth too while very strong in the hops, otherwise can get the citrus and light malts. If I really want to taste all those hops in a lager then I will just order a regular IPA!

Hoppiness and that’s about it really, otherwise a very bland beer from Guinness, at least from the bottle.

No real character or flavour, it is a very weak effort as a lager to rival the big boys. Just boring and not one to seek out what with so many to choose from these days.

A can full of disappointment.

Starts well with a great gold look with a frothy three fingers of head. Great retention.

Smell is malty, grainy in particular. There is a faint hops at the end, but the double hops is doing little.

Taste is sweet grainy malts, with a hops finish. Not much going on, rather dull.

Feel is light and limp. Finish is slightly bitter but I get a sweet aftertaste.

I shouldn't have been surprised, Guiness isn't exactly known for lager. I'll stick with the dark stuff from now on.

Big impresdive shead head that settles to a decent cap before descendi g to a ring. Golden clear apple juice colour. Apple juice on the nose, alongside some grain and a whiff that comes across to me like a mild dose of nail polish. Odd. Hops, appls, grain to taste. Medium bodied with a gentle bite from carbonation. Ordinary stuff.

Bought from Tesco, London. I hadn't realised this is by Guiness until I read this. BB 30/05/19.
L - Darker golden than most lagers. Good thick white head very slowly reducing [should I be surprised for Guiness product?]
S - I'm surprised that the thing that stands out for me is soft fruit, quite unusual though not unpleasant.
T - Swiftly from fruits > slight tart/sharp. It offers those two points but little in between.
M - The carbonation on the tongue holds up well, but then again perhaps the CO2 adds to it's acidity/sharpness. This is a pretty dry beer, and one with curious [lychee?] perfumed aromatics alongside.
O - Guiness does a craft lager [per label], well that's amusing. Average to average/- really, I shan't buy it again.

Had on tap. Actually one of the better beers I have had in the euro pale lager style. Decent hoppiness, more amber color on the pour, and nice malting on the finish with a lack of extreme adjuncts is refreshing. Still thin, light and weak, but that’s to be expected.
