Created by the brewers at The Open Gate Brewery as a holiday gift for their colleagues, friends and families, Guinness Rye Pale Ale proved so popular they had to share it with everyone. The rustic, spicy character of rye grain is balanced with citrus and grapefruit from the mosaic and cascade hops, making it a fine addition to the Guinness family.

500 ml bottle, from Tesco Express, Belfast. ABV is 5%. Deep golden to amber colour, moderate white head. Meaty aroma, notes of broth - weird. Bland and boring dry flavour - weak malts, and no sign of the Mosaic and Cascade hops. What a sick joke!

Tried some out of a variety pack. I'd never tried a rye beer before and probably wont again. Too bitter and off tasting. I guess it's an acquired taste. I tried the first bottle and used the remaining ones for beer shampoo.

Pours hazy, gold in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is mineral, wheat, and a touch of rye on the finish, Sweet, medium bodied, medium-low carbonation. Makes for a solid, above average rye beer. I prefer other rye beers, but this is worth a shot.

very different from an ipa but closer to that strong taste. The rye is clearly there and is a very unique.

Brief initial impression:

Refreshing yet subtly spicy with a nice blueberry flavour from the Mosaic hops. Cascade hops lend it plenty of floral notes, and it's well-balanced and highly drinkable.

Light to medium-bodied. Well-carbonated. Smooth and wet. Somewhat soft. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough or scratchy.

Guinness could easily have just phoned in an IPA in their 12 pack variety box and gotten just as many initial sales (if not more) from drinkers trying the new lineup for the first time. This is a good bit more inspired than it needed to be, and it's a beer I'd definitely nab a sixer of from time to time. Mosaic and Cascade are terrific hop selections, and the utilization of rye malt for a subtle dry spiciness is exceptionally clever. It won't dazzle discerning drinkers, but it's well worth trying. I never thought I'd see the day Guinness of all breweries put out a pale ale that's actually notable, but alas - that day has come.

A likeable pale ale. Robust head. Nice lacing. Color light yellow gold. Smell is slight citrus and pine. Taste smooth, malty with slight hops. Body is lighter side of medium. Good carbonation.
