Had on-tap in Ireland. Poured into a pint glass.

L: Pours a clear dark golden/copper color. Thick creamy white head with some good lacing.

S: Mild... grains and malts... a bit of floral hops.

T/F: Not offensive. Toasted malts and grains... a bit of a mineral water flavor. Some sweetness throughout. The hop profile is mild... just some bittering at the finish... a bit herbal/floral. Smooth and drinkable. Good carbonation and almost creamy on the tongue.

O: An inoffensive beer. Nothing special, but easy to drink and goes well with a meal. I've had much better beer on both sides of the proverbial pond.

This is a beautiful pour with a dark brown color, red is visible when I hold my pint in front of the light. Head is full and lasts a while, lacing stays present. Regrettably the pour is the highlight, a non existent smell at 44 degrees, perhaps too cold, and a mild flavor with little of the heartiness I was expecting. just a roasted flavor. Feel was good, thick and full, coating the tongue but overall I had hoped for more.

Poured into pint glass. It pours a rich, dark amber with a milk-white head and lacing. The smell is mostly bready malt with faint caramel and hops. The taste follows the nose. It is very dry and malty with only a faint sweetness. The finish is fairly bitter. It is moderately carbonated and with a low ABV of 4.5% it is very easy to drink. Smithwick's Irish Ale serves its purpose of being a good sessionable pub ale. I would like to try it on draught as I suspect it is better than out of the bottle. This is a famous ale and I would certainly drink it in Ireland but there are much better offerings this side of the pond.
