look: 5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: Pours an opaque dark brown/black. The head is a beautiful tan color, thick, perfect, with great lacing. I can't see any carbonation since the beer is opaque, but I can see bubbles forming quickly at the bottom of the head.

Smell: Molasses, copper pennies, roasted malt, toasted nuts, brown sugar.

Taste: Surprisingly flavorful with a great roasted/toasted flavor, molasses, brown sugar, and pine bark.

Mouthfeel: Nice carbonation, rich and creamy.

This is a great beer. I think it would be better if it had a little more coffee/chocolate taste. It's too heavy to drink in the summer. It's definitely a winter beer, and even then I couldn't drink many, but I'll enjoy each one.

look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.25

Appearance- The pour results in pretty much half head. It also seems to have excellent retention. And by excellent, I seem to mean obnoxious. The head is a medium beige while the body is a dark chocolate brown which allows the slightest hint of garnet to show when held up to the light. Looks as if there will be considerable lacing.

Nose- Rich with good amount of complexity and presence. Heavy chocolate notes paired with raisins and roasted malts. Roasted malts have some coffee hints which, in combination with the bitter-sweet chocolate, creates a small sour or tangy note. Lush, dark grains and caramel. Some cocoa as well. Swirling shows some creaminess- milk and vanilla.

Taste- Starts off with raisins on the front. These are very sweet and move into a very bold coffee which turns the sweet raisin notes into a roasted sourness. Lots of cocoa and lots of bitterness on the linger. It's a bit of letdown after the aroma. Some caramel but the flavor profile is pretty much dominated by raisins on the front then coffee in the middle and on the finish. Some chocolate in the background. Lots of woodiness. Some grittiness. It's not a bad beer but I'm failing to understand the high rating of this beer. At this point this really seems just above average. Lots of presence but really lacks integration. The raisin and coffee are good contrasts but they never really meet at any point in the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel- A little more than medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Maybe a little too much zing. Some syrup to the texture. Some grit to the finish.

Drinkability- No heat but the notes of the flavor profile really clash. Okay for about 2 bucks a bottle.

Overall- Just above average- I definitely prefer the ease and accessibility of regular Guinness. However, if you like bold, bitter-sweet beers, you might just enjoy it. This will not be a repurchase.
