Appearance - 4.0
Poured two and a half fingers of light brown head over a solid black body. Head reduced quickly to a thin layer.

Smell - 4.0
A strong, rich smell of stewed fruit, roasted and chocolate malt. Noticeable alcohol, slightly burnt smell.

Taste - 4.0
I can't really imagine a strong stout tasting any better than this. Sweet, smooth and malty to begin with, stewed fruit, dark chocolate, finishes very burnt and bitter, overly so in my opinion.

Mouthfeel - 4.5
Very nice, moderate fine carbonation, heavy in the mouth, quite thick.

Drinkability - 3.0
Would I buy it again? Possibly. Would I have a second in one sitting? Never. Despite the mostly good taste, drinking one was not easy.

OVERALL - 3.95
Again, I have to give the disclaimer that in general, I do not like dry stouts. This is unquestionably a quality beer that I did enjoy, but I think you have to be a true lover of the black stuff to truly appreciate this brew.

I went over to London for a vacation recently and finally got the chance to try Guinness' Foreign Extra Stout. It lives up to the hype!

A - Solid looking stout with a black/brown body and a firm head.

S - Roasty, chocolatey goodness.

T - Nice flavorful roasted malt taste with coffee and chocolate being the fore-front tastebud tantalizers. Much more taste than a regular Guinness.

M - Way stronger than their standard brew!

D - Oh yeah, this one goes down easily but with the added bonus of tastiness!

I poured from a bottle into a glass. It had a nice thick, creamy 2 finger foam that lasted about halfway down the glass before it began to disappear. It had a light, roasty smell. The taste was very good. It starts out smooth and creamy before it becomes slightly acidic/sour and finishes with a refreshing hoppiness. This beer has a lighter mouthfeel than most stouts and porters, but it is very creamy and satisfying. A very drinkable stout with a refreshing finish that is dry and hoppy, with a slightly sour edge. Very good if you like stout. I will definitely drink this one again.

Having heard and read many positive things about the Foreign Extra Stout, I knew this was one I needed to find when traveling recently to Bermuda. Most Guinness pours on 'The Island' are the garden variety 'Draught' version, but shop the local groceries and bottle shops and be rewarded with the 'FES'.

I picked up a six-pack ($12) at Henry's Pantry, Southampton Parish. Poured this 33 cl bottle to a pint glass back in good ol' Portland.

Best before: 26/01/09

A: Perfectly black, but for thin threads of auburn near the top and bottom of the glass. Head is a creamy 2+ fingers, slow to fall, dusty tan in color. Lace is superb, clinging in wide curtain-like bands.

S: Dark roasted aroma, chocolate-y and earthy. Smells a bit of ash and pitch, with a semi-sweet lactic note.

T: Dark, almost burnt, malt hits upfront. Mix is an acrid espresso coffee and a bittersweet (emphasis: bitter) raw chocolate. Some tangy fruit and a sly malted milk creep in, but mostly this one is about an undeniably big roast.

M: Sneaky mouthfeel starts smooth and creamy, seemingly very light. Powerful bitterness builds and builds, all after just one sip, leaving a long-lasting mouth-filling coating that's worth savoring. Low carbonation, velvety. Alcohol is all but undetectable.

D: A real treat. I can't say this is the Guinness version I'd want exclusively (flavors a bit oppressive after a while, abv is pretty high), but it's one I'd love to have again and would want to have access to when the craving hit. Unfortunately, a trip back to Bermuda isn't in the cards anytime soon, so I'll have to find the right time and place to enjoy these last couple hoo.

Appearance - Black, 2 fingers of brownish head which reduced.

Smell - The usual strong coffee smell.

Taste - Certainly stronger than Australian brewed Guinness Extra Stout, but not any better.

Mouthfeel - Pretty smooth.

Drinkability - Higher ABV, but not really any harder to drink than GES.

Overall - Unfortunately, this fails to improve on regular GES.

This beer comes straight from Ireland, thanks to jspruit for trading me a few. Had been curious for some time to see how the version in Ireland differs from the version we get here in the states. Mostly though, I will review this as just another stout.

Pours dark, like any stout should, and a good inch and a half of soft, billowy foam forms. Very good retention of course, some lacing as well.

The smell of Guinness is there (a tangy yeast aroma) but this one has a bitter kick to it and clearer aromas of chocolate, toffee, and cocoa. A bit of chocolate milk as it warms up. A touch of vanilla and lactose sweetness is there too.

Hop bitterness up front with bitter chocolate and a roasted finish. Bitter and dry on the finish with a nutty aftertaste. Don't have too much to say about this one, it's just ok. The bitterness seems to tone down as it warms up but I didn't even pour this one cold so it might just be my palate getting use to it.

Mouth-feel is semi-dry with a slight cookie dough after taste and roasted bitterness.

Not a big fan of this one but there's more going on here than on the stuff we get that's for sure.

Pours opaque black with three fingers of rich, tan head that settles to a soapy layer in a few moments.
The aroma is rich, with a lot of dark malt, roasted grains, butter, butterscotch, piney hops, caramel, and maple. mmm.
Initially malty on the palate, with the sweetness quickly balanced and then overridden with roasted grain. The finish is of acrid grain, with most of the bitterness that balances the malt stemming from the roastiness as opposed to the hops.
The mouthfeel is excellent: smooth, med-full body, very dry and astringent finish, but with a little lingering sweetness on the center of the tongue that balances the bitter astringency on the sides.
This machine will plough.

This is definitely the best Guinness I have ever had. I am a fan of all things Guinness, so I was surprised when I was on a research trip to a remote town called Hopkins Village, and was able to get Guinness in a bottle! Belize is hot and humid, but drinking this beer did not feel out of place, even on the hottest days.

A: Dark, thick. Pours thick head when forced, but the head dissipates rapidly. Best to just drink from the bottle.
S: Malt comes through. Very faint hops.
T: Absolutely delicious. Slightly sweet, rich. Not overpowering.
M: Rich. This will wash the sand out of your mouth without killing your palate.
D: Very drinkable. I lived off of this and Belikin Stout for over a month during a very hot July.

12 ounce bottle received as an extra from seaoflament, thanks for including this Irish brew in my package, split with a friend as the night cap on St. Patty's Day, poured into a pint glass

A-Almost black, very dark brown with hints of red, hufe two inch beige head that slowly faded into the top of the glass, only some lacing

S-Roasted malt, milk, caramel, some hoppy aromas, hint of coffee, maple syrup, scents were pretty weak overall and nothing really stood out

T-Much different than any other Guinness product I have had before, much sweeter and not as dry equals better in this case, starts off with a roasted malt flavor, fades into some slight chewiness and milk chocolate, ends with some hoppiness and some dryness but not too much like the other, also some coffee in the finish but it is barely noticeable, went down pretty easy compared to the Guinness I have drank in the past

M-Dry and somewhat sweet mouthfeel, lots of carbonation, medium to thick body, taste did not linger as long as a standard Guinness does here in the states

D-Could drink a few bottles of this but the ABV is higher than normal, so it might affect me eventually, smooth, not too heavy on the stomach surprisingly

Not a big fan of Guinness but this strong stout brew changed my mind a little bit, would drink this over the standard stuff in the United States any day, would drink again if I ever make it to Ireland, recommended to try

I've never had the Foreign Extra Stout, although I'd been wanting to try it for a long time. Finally found a few bottles. The beer is very dark black, although not completely solid: a dark brown translucency is present through the pour and in the shallows of the glass. The beer is an impressive site, though...the head is mammoth and seriously solid. It's a dark tan, nearly nut-brown color, and it leaves intricate lace. Nice. The aroma is a mix of alcohol, a touch of malt, and heavily roasted (burnt?) malt. It has a serious booze quality, and I didn't expect the malt, considering it's not really present in the normal Guinness ES or Draught. The taste is full of chocolate, coffee, and roasted grain flavor. The beer presents more alcohol in the flavor than is really present in the ABV...rather than hiding it, it become part of the flavor. Fairly heavy in body, the beer is satisfying and smooth at the same time. It's a pretty dry stout, but there's more sweetness than expected. I found it satisfying and solid. Head and shoulders better than typical Guinesses.

Very excited to try this one. Thanks Riggsy for including this in my Secret Santa package.

Pours super dark, almost pitch black. Only a slight burgundy can be seen through the thin portions of the glass next to a light. A dense and very stable head rests on top and doesn't want to go away. Very uniform, filmy lacing is left behind.
Roasty notes accompanied by a slight hint of black liccorice. Slight caramel notes as well.
Nice dark malt and crystal flavors. Mild hop presence. Slight hints of fruit. The best tasting Guinness I've had.
Medium bodied and nicely carbonated. A slight pleasant bittering lingers in the upper palate and on the back of the tounge. Overall, extremely well balanced.
I've been a fan of Guinness for sometime now. The Draught is a good beer that is fairly easy to find in many restraunts that don't have a great beer selection... The Extra Stout has often been a saple for me at home... This one takes things to a new level. What a wonderfull offering!

Just drank one of these at a brothel on St.
Marteen don't know if it was the beer or the location I liked better but it was a welcome change from the weaker guiness at home because of the 7.5% content overall very good the carribean is paradise. Wish I could find this in the States.

My first real experience with a true stout that can be called as such. Rich flavor, chocolaty, bitter, heady aroma. This was brought back to me from family members, and I loved it. 7.5% alc. by volume, a nice difference for me and my Guinness draft regularity. Drank at room temperature, as instructed by the Guinness brewery.

Bottle purchased from recent trip to Ireland.

Poured into a Alsagash glass.

Big head and dark black. Left tons of lace.

Slight roasted malt scent. Not a big nose.

Tastes like a Guinness...only better. All the flavors are more pronounced. While nothing is out of kilter. Nice an balaced. Smooth, with no alcohol bite. This is damn good. Not too bitter or acrid.

Mouthfeel is creamy and thick. Coats the mouth. Velvety.

Drinkability. I could have a few of these, but I am sure the 7.5 would catch up to me.

Overall, I think this is the only Export Stout I have had so not a lot to compare to. Either way, this was a good beer. I would seek it out again. Too bad you can't buy it in the US.

this was a godsend when i was in st. lucia and limited to piton and heineken. i like this version much better than the smaller stuff we get stateside. bigger bodied, bigger taste, bigger mouthfeel. nice roasty finish to provide balance to the dark, sweet, complex malt character. a bit of grainy astringency. why they use fish bladder crap to clarify such a dark beer is my question.

Thanks to mmmmBEEEER for sharing a bottle from his travels. The beer pours nearly black with a bit of amber around the edges. Medium thick and foamy dark beige head that dissipates steadily, and rings of lacing. The aroma consists of coffee, roasted malt and molasses. Rich, roasty body with coffee, chocolate and burnt malt flavors. Some bitter hops shine through as well. The finish is bitter coffee and hops with malty/chocolatey undertones. Leaves a hoppy aftertaste that lingers awhile. Miles better than the "regular" Guinness.

Yet another brewery for Guiness Foreign Extra Stout.
Pours deep black with a two finger off white to tan head of loose bubbles that slowly melts leaving a thick mapping in it's wake.

Aromas are solidly British Stout with burnt malts and a hint of hops with a trademark yeast.

Taste is burnt dark malt with some coffee and chocolate as well as a bit of bitter hops at the end. Very solid and satisfying. Still with the very classic Guinness tastes, smells and feels.

Mouthfeel is substantially creamy and smooth and alcohol is almost completely hidden.

Love this stuff.

Got this in a trade with jspruit, thanks for the opportunity.
The beer pours a solid black with a slight dark ruby highlight on the edges. I might have poured to quickly, but this thing had a full 2+ inches of head and I had to swallow the last little bit out of the bottle. The head faded slowly to a thin layer on the surface of the beer and laced all the way down the glass. Smells of chocolate and an almost wine like soury fruity funk in there. Taste is a soured chocolate with a slight alcohol sting. Definitely has that signature Guinness sourness to it. Creamy and smooth to drink, I wish I had let it warm a bit more. Very nice stout, I wish I could get it more easily!

My second FES.. this one's to serve as a compare with the hard to get SES (Special Export Stout) that I am going to taste tomorrow. I shall cut the chase and go straight to the beer; this one pours out opague very dark brown black with a thick creamy, rocky head that refuses to settle without sitting for a good amount of time. Smells of caramel, coffee and burnt or roasted malts; very light chocolate hint perhaps. The beer enters with a light coffee note which transforms into thick creamy roasted malts with a certain milkiness to it. When I am near the finish, I sense chocolate creeping in and there's also some dark fruits here which lasts well into the after taste. Light caramel, coffee hints show up here and there and the milkiness was pretty obvious after its initial attack on the palates. The taste exhibits an increasing level of bitterness which hits a crescendo in the finish but somehow I felt that I was able to contain the bitterness much better than the last time and I can really enjoy this one this time. The after taste started off with roasted malts and coffee and this quickly moved on to plums and dates with the malts constantly sitting at the back and dark malty fruity aromas on the nose throughout the after taste. Generally this one gets better as it warms; the mouth feel was rich, creamy, chunky and thick, needless to say with average carbonation (as it warms) and topping things up a creamy smoothness as it goes down. Great experience with a great stout; let's see what the Special Export variant has to offer.

the 640ml bottle says "brewed under license for diageo greater china limited" it also clearly states that alcohol is only 5% but clearly says guinness foreign extra stout on the bottle

a: pours deep brown with large amounts of off-white foamy head; not nitro so no beautiful casacading effect

s: caramel/toffee with hints of burnt coffee flavor; sweet molasses flavors also very present

t: delicious coffee malts with with syrupy sweet barley presence

m: it is a real shame this one is from the bottle since the carbon instead of nitrous makes the beer too syrupy/cloying and not creamy enough

d: this is some weird asian guinness foreign extra that is not as enjoyable as other guinnesses i have enjoyed in the past; too syrupy sweet to have the staying power of its brethren

After 5 days of fruitless searching, I thought I'd never find this in Aruba despite its apparent ubiquity. But lo and behold, a convenience store trip finally yielded a 6-pack. One I drank and the rest made it on the plane back with me.

APPEARANCE: Pours completely opaque black into a nonic pint. The head is 2 and a half fingers high and is a faded beige. The bubbles are so incredibly small and tight that the head resembles a pillowy cloud. Eventually it drops to a full surface coating of foam with rings of lacing showing me the depth of each gulp I take.

SMELL: The smell is quite robust and high on chocolatiness. Boozy fruits accompany the dessert-like tones, and a lactic sweetness forms the backbone of this intensely rich-smelling ale.

TASTE: It starts out as a boozy chocolate burst on your mouth, but the booziness becomes vinous as some fruity flavors creep in. The finish is dominated by a wonderful dichotomy of a lactic sweetness and bitter roasted malts and a balancing hop bitterness.

MOUTHFEEL: The chewiness is knife-and-fork worthy and the carbonation is just enough to tickle the tongue but still maintain a fantastic smoothness.

DRINKABILITY: Such a thick beer but so easy drinking. The alcohol comes out slightly but doesn't really get in the way. A fantastic choice for dessert or any other time of day.

Oh, how I wish this was the Guinness that was sold in the US. It's sad to think that when I finish my 6-pack, this will be it for me for a very long time.

Gorgeous. Like herbal single orgin chocolate. Complete, complex and alluring. On the palate it is quite tart up front, like sinewy vine sap (from hops, I gather). Then this releases its grip to reveal toasty fine bitterness. Throughout there is an effusive display of sweet herbs, pomegranate, black grapes, vanilla and coffee. Winey. Food beer. Perfectly weightless. Unexpectedly refreshing and complex. This is not milquetoast, childish beer.

08/07/07- Received via trade from BA member Talisker.

Presentation- 11.2oz bottle with a best by date printed on the neck of the bottle. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance- Black as expected in the pour. Larger inch plus creamy looking head. Left decent patchwork lace behind.

Smell- Light dusting of chocolate, maybe a touch of hops and the lightest bit of coffee bean notes.

Taste- The cross between dark and milk chocolate comes though consistently, while the coffee flavor seems to be almost absent. Malt is fairly deep and a touch smoky. Seems to be a bit bitter from the handful of hops they put it.

Mouthfeel- A tad more carbonated than I would like, but becomes lightly creamy and more smooth as it warms to room temp.

Drinkability- Don't know what all the fuss is about. It's a pervectly fine beer, but I've had many other of the style that are better and have better outright flavor. I guess it's because of the scarcity.

This is now available more and more around in Ireland-at a relatively affordable price too so that is nice. Poured a jet black from a 330mL bottle with a large creamy tan thick head.

Smells of coffee and molasses and syrup-your tastbebuds already feel a bit heavy when your nose is working.

Tastes of a great stout-more fullness than your average draft stout. Coffee and malty and a bit sweet at the end too-maybe even a bit nutty and chocolaty too. This is definitely a full stout, and I feel like I can detect a bit of the alcohol so I know that it is strong.

I would like to drink more than one of these in a session, but I dont think that I really could handle too many. It is a great beer to enjoy though and I am glad that they are more available to me everyday now!
