Bottle pour into 2/3 pint glass.

I can't believe it's taken me so long to discover this one. A regular Guinness Draft drinker during my student days this one passed me by completely. This is lovely stuff; bitter, herbal and complex with a reasonably soft mouthfeel. Doesn't have the same intensity as many of it US counterparts but sometimes a bit of subtlety is what you want; it gives you a little more to contemplate. A cracking surprise and readily availability/good value means that this will be a regular buy for me.

Cheers!

A very knowledgeable specialty/beer/wine manager at my workplace (#TeamWFM) refers to this as "Expedition Stout." Not sure why.

Appearance: About 3/8 inch, toffee-tan head lasting about a minute plus. Lacing hangs on the sides of the glass a minute and a half at least after drinking quite a bit of this. (No, I'm not sipping slowly, I was thirsty!) The color of the ale is black or almost black.

Aroma: Dark roasted coffeeish. Activated my yeast allergy so I sneezed! Nose stuffed up.

Taste: Fairly full and balanced between slight sweetness and malt and bitterness. Satisfying, although there are a few brews, especially Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, that top this by a long shot. A thin and annoying bitterness remains on the tongue long after a swallow. (FYI re: my taste preferences: I'm a much bigger fan of Imperial and oatmeal stouts because they are generally sweeter and less bitter then regular stouts.)

Mouthfeel: lighter medium, between thin and thick ale, but towards thinner. Like light machine oil might feel if it weren't oily.

Overall: If it weren't so bitter, and the bitterness didn't stick to the tongue so long afterward, this might get a higher rating. Given the choice I will always pick the black chocolate, imperial or pretty much any oatmeal stout over this one.

Pours dark brownish black like cola. Thick frothy khaki head dissipates leavings sticky lacing all the way down and a thin head.

Smell has aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, and a slight hoppy aroma. Its like a regular guinness but with a hoppier aroma.

Taste has notes of chocolate, roasted malts and hops providing a slightly bitter finish. Beer is slightly sweet with a cola like touch. The roasted barley really comes outs the beer warms.

Feel is very smooth, a bit lighter than some other Guinness variants, but still good for the style. Very dry on the finish.

Overall a nice Guinness variant and a good example of a foreign export stout.

From a bottle, pours almost black with a one finger head. There is a mouth filling maltiness followed immediately with a hopsy carbonated tang. Relative to a "regular" Guinness Extra Stout", this had more hops (with hops bitterness) and a bit less fullness.

Review warning, I am tasting this at Guiness in St. James Gate (so discount what I say). Wonderful inky black color, a nose of coffee and chocolate, and a mouth filling flavor that follows the nose and lasts a good twenty seconds. The extra hops (designed in 1801 to help the beer travel without spoiling) brings a gentle bitterness that is more pronounced than Guinness Draft. A fine example of a stout.
