Always looks great in a pint.

L: Dark ruby / near-black. Nice creamy khaki head.
S: Roasted malt
T: Bitter and somewhat malty. Like a bitter water.
F: Very thin. Like water. Just the right amount of carbonation though.
O: There is a distinct difference between a pint in Ireland versus what we have readily available in the US. Its not a bad stout, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely still my first pick when I want something malty and bitter and its the only offering on tap that fits the bill.

If they could only put this back into the horse that produced it. Guinness is the most overrated beer in the world. Low in ABV, disgusting in taste, and horrible to drink.

Purchased at Sydney Galic Club/Molly Malones, Darlinghurst Sydney.

Appearance: one of the most strikingly beautiful beers. Jet black with Ruby are peeking out the bottom of the glass. Succulent looking creamy white head, it's an art show watching the head cascade to the top of the glass. Like Kilkenny, and most nitrogen beers, a beautiful beer to look at.

Aroma: Dark Roasted malts and grains. No hop presence to really talk about. Just roasted malty goodness.

Taste: the head is smooth and milkshake creamy, the beer is roasted malt, slight bitterness. Somewhat watery flavour. Actually not as flavourful as I've had it before, but I fear this is brewed under license in Australia.

Feel: It's a little thin and watery. Again, if this has been brewed under license I feel it's been done from a syrup. It's smooth and easy drinking.

Overall: Whilst I've never been to Ireland, I have had Guinness on the UK and my memories of the UK Guinness are much fonder. This one feels bland, thin, and watery. A real disappointment actually. Been a while since I've had one and was expecting a lot more. That said, it's still a classic. Smooth, easy drinking.

I'm sure in Ireland and the UK (as mentioned) it's much better, but I can't help but feel it's been wimped for the Australian hot climate.

The greatest of them all! What can I say? It’s fucking perfect! Delicious on any day! Such a wonderful brew! I always purchase in bottles since I believe that aluminum ruins the taste of any beer, and any beer in a can must be poured in a glass to be properly sampled.

 

It's pretty good. Legend has it if you fly to Ireland and catch a leprechaun, he'll do the rain jig of his people, and a glass of Guinness that actually tastes amazing will materialize in your hand--but I can't be bothered to find out, and I'm skeptical of how true that is vs. the likelihood that people just think everything tastes like god's nectar on some psychological level when they're traveling. But it is true you should pour it and wait a bit before drinking if you want those fruity notes to come out.

 

 

 

 

Nothing else comes close to the appearance of a Guinness. From the settle to the silky smooth, creamy head. To me its rather bitter tasting but very little hops come through. The smell is very classic. Nothing fancy just a nice stout. Could not recommend enough.

Poured from a 14.9-oz undated can into a stout glass.

Look: Opaque black, with a 1” tan head that lingered long, leaving very abundant lacing.

Nose: Medium dark roast, some brown sugar, some dark dried fruit.

Mouthfeel: Thin for the style, but adequate carbonation.

Attack: Not as full as might be expected from the nose; medium dark roast, malt, a hint of the brown sugar.

Finish: Slight bitterness from the roast.

Overall: A classic; an enjoyable, eminently-drinkable and safe bet especially at a bar that otherwise serves mostly American Adjunct Lagers. Begging the pardon of especially younger raters who have grown up drinking only craft beer, downrating this beer is rather like downrating the athletic greats of a former era such as a Jim Brown or a Mickey Mantle because you don’t know their context, or because they didn’t wag their rear ends around after a play the way today’s “athletes” do. I’d be happy to order and drink this beer anytime.
