A: Dark and cloudy brownish orange color with a short lived foam head. Lower carbonation, no lacing.

S: Sour and grassy notes, with a belgian yeast aroma lacing everything. Some minor sweet citrus notes. Not bad.

T: Slight tart and sour, with a natural fresh sweetness. Mild malt character enhances the nuances of citrusy spice and clove. Hay and grassy farm qualities are present and appropriate.

M: Medium bodied. Very low carbonation. Still comes off rather well.

D: Average. It's worth trying, and perhaps a good entry point for those looking to explore the saison style.

At the brewpub, one additional reason to go there. Bit of alcohol incredibly in the aroma. Yellow with a bit of foam. Bold taste with tartness, then honey and spices aftertaste.Honey offsets the dryness characteristic of this style. Aggressive carbonation.

Bottle shared by Rhino Chris, Summer Solstice 2011 bottle. Into a tulip.

Pours a golden brown, with a nice offwhite head that retains well. Nose is pungent, really. Vegetal in some respects (onions are all that come to mind - Summit hops?), as well as some undefined citrus and fruit pits. Taste is dumbed down from the nose, but the flavours still prevail. Mild citrus notes, hints to some tartness. Not a ton of funk. Medium high carbonation, lighter than medium body. Good if interesting - definitely some unique flavours that I've never encountered before and can't pinpoint. Not sure I'd revisit, but it was worth a shot.

sampled on tap at the brewery dec 27/2006. listed as 6.5%

pours a nice amber colour with a half inch of dense off-white head. drops fairly quickly and leaves spotty lace.

aroma is nice. bit of funk. light bubblegum. nice peppery spice. bit of orange peel. very fresh aroma.

taste is good. bit of funk. bubblegum again. tangerine. orange peel. spicy. pepper and maybe cardamom. bit of clove. less funk than i'd expect in most saisons, but still quite good.

mouthfeel is good. light carbonation and a fairly dry finish.

drinkability is good. very enjoyable. alcohol is hidden well. i'd glady drink lots of this on a warm summer day.

Bottle thanks to Jale.

A - Kind of a darker amber colored body with two fingers of nice, white head. Not a ton left behind on the glass.

S - Smells pretty sweet, belgian fruity, and surprisingly tart. Slight bit of peppery spice, but most is blown away by the sweet and tartness.

T - I wonder if this is infected, keep thinking of infected Matilda as I put this down. A lot of tartness and sweetness, with a bit of fruity yeast. Taste is initally quite good, but gets more syrupy and sweet as I go and somewhat fatiguing.

M - Medium bodied, hard carbonation.

O - Strange beer, not sure if it is supposed to be like this, but wouldn't have really guessed it was a saison if I had it blind. Not bad though.

Pours so dark I thought it was mislabeled. Light brown body with no lace and a small head.

Very yeasty aroma, like fresh fruit, specifically apples and grapes.

Tastes like both sweet and tart apples. Spices like a fresh pie. This is a saison? I had to read recent reviews at ratebeer to confirm this really was the right beer. Finishes with distinct malt sweetness and alcohol.

Feels like a good low carbed pale ale.

Good beer, but wtf?

Enjoyed at the brewpub. Hazy orange/amber with some fine bubbles that ring the glass. Some lacing, fair retention for what's there. There's a light funkiness to the aroma, some fruity sweetness and a little peppery spice. Maybe a bit of bubblegum too, but only after it warmed a bit. Light bitterness with sweet, tropical fruit and a bit of funk. Citrusy lemon with a spicy finish. Some dryness, medium bodied with fairly low carbonation. Not bad, but falls a little short for me.

12oz bottle as part of the limited release Belgian series variety pack. Purchased at the brewpub, big thanks to Frozensoul 327!
Pours extremely dark for a saison, a bronzed over copper colour. Head that last only along the outside of the glass. Plenty of barnyard funk, long pungeant yeast sourness. Quite strong with notes of rotting pear, apple, grapes. Leaves alot to smell! Mouthfeel not as sour as others in the series. This still rather yeasty, but showcasing a real toasty (not quite roasted, just lightly toasted) malt bill. Some lingering caramel, flavours a little too mild. The yeast really works well with the taste. Soft malty aftertaste. Certainly getting the funk. I found it a little different for a saison but was quite interesting.

Bottle from 2011 Summer Solstice, thanks to jale. Served in a Bell's tulip. Moderate gusher, so be ready.

A - Pours with two fingers of creamy-off-white foam that slowly settle to a thick cap, leaving minimal lace behind. Hazy dark peach body.

S - Belgian yeast, spicy esters, moderate peppery character, some stone fruits, mild earthy and grassy pungency. Quite a bit different from the Alsace Saison I had on-tap at the brewpub a few months back.

T - Taste is sweeter, with notes of bubblegum, stone fruits, and light citrus. There's a hint of spicy Belgian yeast character in the finish, but this is definitely on the sweeter side for the style. No discernible funk or acidity.

M - Carbonation is zesty and slightly harsh to start - I'm guessing the gushing is from a bottle-conditioning issue and not from wild yeast. If you let the beer sit the bubbles settle out quite quickly. Pleasant medium-light body with light residual stickiness. Some warmth after 8oz or so - this batch may be higher than the 6% listed here.

D - A decent beer, but not a particularly great take on the style. Paired nicely with the salmon I had for lunch in place of a fruity white wine. It was quite easy to drink 12oz of this one and get back to work without having to take a nap. I probably wouldn't buy it again but I appreciate seeing lower ABV beers of varying styles at Kuhnhenn.

Suggested musical pairing - "Intrata di Rob-Roy Macgregor" by Hector Berlioz.

2011 Summer Solstice bottle, courtesy of jale (thanks Jim!). Poured into a Stone Cali-Belgie glass at home.

This is pretty dark for a saison, although I realize there's a wide range within the style. SRM of 18-20 or so. A couple fingers of foam on top, just a little wispy lacing.

Mildy fruity character to the aroma, lots of esters, seems to be a Belgian yeast or maybe a German hefe yeast (unlikely on the latter). It tastes initially sweet, with some slightly bitter spice-like notes in back. A little astringency in the aftertaste, maybe Kuhnhenn did place some spice of some sort in this beer after all. Well carbonated, heavier than usual body. Lots of flavor and body for a 6% beer, Kuhnhenn never seems to approach a beer in a half-ass way. Pretty good overall, but not really worth the cost versus the many better saisons that are more widely available.

12oz bottle into a tasting glass. Thanks to Chris for sharing.

A: Clear amber body with a finger of fine off-white foam. Good retention, light lace. Nice.

S: Huh. Sweet + spicy, with the spice resembling rye malt much more than yeast phenol; there's also some vanilla and light pepper. Maybe a bit of tartness as well. Weird, but not unpleasant.

T: Quite sweet, with caramel + vanilla leading to that rye-like spice and a dry, peppery finish. Tasty.

M: Lively medium body. Very creamy. Pleasant.

O: Good beer, but nothing like any Saison I've ever had. Of course, I almost never expect a Kuhnhenn beer to be to style.

Golden amber colour, slightly hazy, white head, one finger, some lace. Smell is yeasty and floral, tea like, chamomile and a nice amount of spice. Taste is spicy and malty, orange, chamomile, tea, nice and balanced hop profile, citrus with a nice tartness. Medium carbonation, good feel, nice weight. Really nice stuff, finished my sample very quickly, easy drinking stuff here. Thanks to Chris for sharing.
