Fourth Dementia - Bourbon Barrel-Aged

2017 bottle sent my way by way of the generosity of @FlintB during NBS BIF #007.
Aggressive pour yields a small flare of off tan head that recedes pretty immediately. Body is murky raisin brown.

Nose brings forth the classic notes of leather and raisin and wood and a faint hint of spice. Surprisingly mellow.

Rich body with notes of milk chocolate and tobacco and spice and sweet vanilla and marshmallow char. As it warms more of the middle range 'old ale' characteristics come forth with leather and toffee and more of an emphasis back on the tobacco.

This is every bit of 13.5%, but it's not overwhelming or harsh. Rich and spicy and boozy it's definitely a sipper. Starts off a bit sweet, but as it warms that becomes less pronounced and the other stuff moves more into the forefront.

Look - Pours a very dark brown with a light head, some of which sticks around a while.

Smell - Molasses, fig, malt, toffee, and maple syrup.

Taste - Malt, oak, bourbon, fig, and barrel char.

Feel - Fairly smooth and easy drinking.

Overall - This is a fairly nice beer, though I think I'm rating it below other people's scores.

 

Received a bottle courtesy of DIM on 12-7-23. 2022 edition consumed for review 5-28-25.

Beer poured brown with a nice off white head with the original pour.

Nose is very nice, getting toasted caramel malts and cherries.

Taste is very nice as well as the malt base gives strong notes of toffee and cherries. Back end hopping and the barrel are good enough but allows for style appropriate sweetness.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and very soft and velvety.

Overall, this is a really nice brew, thanks Dan!

Dark body with lighter than expected tan head. Aroma: pleasant but not very strong with bourbon & roasted malt. Sweet, complex flavors: lots of caramel, fig, bourbon, maple syrup, toasted malt, marshmallows & some spice. Thick & velvety smooth feel, good carbonation & it’s 13.4 % is well hidden. Overall: excellent, one the best!

 

 

Semi-aggressive pour into my favorite snifter revealed a dark cola with cherry hue and a half-finger tan effervescent collar that faded quickly without much lacing. The raisin figgy nose is wonderful right next to the bottle. I had a tough time smelling it from the glass; you really had to cup and coax it. Medium mouthfeel that coats the tongue and lingers nicely; promoting the same raisin figgy flavor that was in the nose. This 2024 13.5% ABV wasn’t very noticeable in the mouth but there was a bit of heat in the back of my throat as I got further into it. Took my time considering this one. I enjoy this style and Kuhnhenn did I nice job with this one. I’ve got a couple more from them that I’m looking forward to. Cheers!!

Excellent

Dark brown color. One-finger thick, beige head. Dark fruits, raisins, caramel malt, and wood in the aroma. Sweet, malty taste with notes of bourbon. Warming.

 

Great pour. Brown body, good carbonation, beautiful brown head that stuck around and left lacing.

No nose.

Smooth, easy to drink.

This is not a style I especially enjoy, but still very delicious.
