about as good as old ale can be, but for my money i can find a better one out there. not to say that this isnt special, just my second or third beer from these guys, and its downright fabulous, but its a shade below some of the best old ales ive had. its far too sweet for my palate, certainly a once in a while beer at most. rich brown sugar liquid with some yeast floating around and a lackadaisical than head that lasts just a minute. toffee and butterscotch on the nose, like a sundae, with a ton of sugary malt and alcohol, not much hops, not much balance, not much subtlety, this is a sugar and grain bomb. the taste makes me curious to try the non barrel aged version. its hard to tell how much of the sweet, wood, and booze come from the barrel or the base beer, its mixed well, but tough to separate. a side by side would be real cool. undoubtedly one of michigans best products, its just a little sweeter than i can handle, and the alcohol really dominates once it warms up. some dark fruit maybe and burnt sugar, belgian yeast would do wonders. a big and rich brew, not entirely unique but well executed. i will look forward to more kuhnhenn beers, and to some day getting my hands on the not barrel aged version. a great beer overall but a tad under my lofty expectations for it.

Served on tap at the Solstice bottle release day, 2013.

Appearance- Like foamy brandy- rich leggy amber that you can't see through. Looks amazing.

Smell- Super complex- butterscotch, caramel, toffee, creamy coffee, faint sandalwood, vanilla, creamy chocolate, caramello!

Taste- Big fruity rye whiskey, followed by vanilla, smoke, raisins, figs, currants, dulce de leche, big chocolate toffee. Wait two minutes, and its like the finest cigar you've ever had all over your mouth. Super tasty!

Mouthfeel- Super smooth with just enough bubbles to keep it refreshing and not fizzy. Amazing- suits the character of the beer very well.

Overall- AWESOME! I truly did not expect this much out of it, but I now believe the hype. Glad it's local, and if you haven't had it, try it. One of the most complex, tasty brews I've had. Amazing stuff. Well done Kuhnhenn!!!
