12 oz. bottle. Deep brown. Small head. Smells of classic BA 4th D. Hefty oak, wet sock, bourbon, brown sugar. Tastes of oak, a tinge of funky oak, deep rich sweetness. For a while, it's exactly as I remember regular BA 4th D, but then a comparatively bright caramel flavor kicks in. Sweet, rich, heavy, slow to drink. I know the original was sweet and I know my memory is not reliable, but this seems unnecessarily sweeter. Doesn't lose anything, just sweeter. Also, salt?

This one pours a very dark brown, nearly black, with a small head and not much lacing.

This smells like caramel, port, leathery bourbon, root beer/sarsaparilla, oak, gooey caramel, and chocolate.

This tastes quite good. The caramel is not overdone, at all - it’s fairly light, and the base 4D still shines through quite strongly. There’s that chocolate and sort of herbal cola like sweetness that is so classic to this beer. There’s some vanilla, toffee, and lots of port/dark fruit. It’s so distinctive and tasty.

This is silky, with very little carbonation or booziness. It’s much more drinkable than the ABV would suggest.

I’m still a sucker for these beers. I really wanna try the vanilla version at some point.

Pours a shiny dark brown color. One finger velvety brown head dissipates steadily but never completely. A thin layer of foam is retained on the top of the beer.

Aroma has notes of dark fruits, ripe cherries, bourbon, oak, leather, and some toffee and caramel notes. Really a decadent aroma that comes across sweet and dessert like, but not overly sweet.

Taste follows that notes with notes of leather, oak, toffee, caramel, some dark fruits, tannins and a real blast of bourbon on the back end. As the beer warms you really get that Himalayan salt coming through - providing that salty/sweet contrast that is so pleasing the palate. This is a 2018 bottle and this thing is still HOT. The bourbon genuinely provides not just warmth but a slight burn on the throat as its consumed.

Feel is medium to full bodied, sticky and viscous. Literally sticky. Moderate to very mild carbonation. Somewhat drier on the finish that seems to get drier as the beer is consumed.

Overall this is a damn lovely beer. Its a real artistic take on the Old Ale style, but it works really well. It was a real pleasure to get to try this one.
