Amber in color; unfiltered, so it is not crystal clear. Quite bitter with a balance of malty caramel-like sweetness. Aroma is of intense dry hopping; meaning- lots of hops were added late in the beer making process post boiling.

On tap @ Hop Cat.

A - Pale yellow/orange colour with a small amoutn of white head.

S - Light nose. Some sweet and earthy hop aromas and not much else.

T - Floral, herbal and earhty hops. Bitterness is light with fairly prevalent sweetness and some grainy and bready malt flavours. The hop profile seems to be completely dead on this one. Not sure if Hopcat was sitting on an old keg or if I was served the wrong beer, but based on the other reviews, it seems like something was wrong with my glass.

M - Light to medium body with moderate carbonation.

Growler picked up last week by Alex, in my growler though, so thanks to us both...There was concern when this poured as it was bubbly and you can tell it affected the beer for sure. A bright orange, much darker in the middle, but now carbonation. I'll have to get this a generic score until I get back up to Kuhnhenn and try this again...The aroma is super bad, all totally and complete cat piss. A Columbus IPA on steroids and not at all in the good way, can't get past the piss to pull anything else out...The taste is mostly cat piss too, not as strong.

I did not enjoy this at all, carbonation was a small factor but this is just total cat piss.

Probably my least favorite offerings by the brothers. While most of the Kuhnhenn beers lean toward the malty side of things (even when they are well-hopped there is always a malt backbone) this one is an exception, the hops totally obliterate all competition on the palate.

Served a bit too cold into a curvacious tall mug. Pours a bright gold, hazy with a thin head that had decent retention. Nose is very floral and piney, strong hop presence with a variety of different notes, this made more sense when I was told a few to several hop varieties are used for aroma and flavor. Taste has a lot of grapefruit going on and is quite bitter, not enough to make me pucker but enough that it really wasn't too enjoyable. Mouthfeel was about average, but drinkability suffered from the flavor imbalance.

Slàinte!

A - Bright orange beer with a bit of a bubbly head. Decent head that left some lace on the sides.

S - Bit of pine, ammonia, light malts, floral hops. Just too much bitter and ammonia like aroma on this one.

T - Tastes about the same as the aroma, with cat pee being the dominant flavor on a malt backbone. Not really a huge fan.

M - Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, a little gritty.

O - Not sure if something went wrong with this or what, nothing I'd care to try again, unless someone told me it was significantly different.

Whaddya know-- A beer by these people that doesnt stand out. Pour is avg amber murk ---vinegar smell-malty taste with the cloying mouthfeel. This one is nothing special but I could see the drinkability improving if you start out with these with either some BBQ or anything else spicy.

6.5% ABV according to the menu. Pours out to a medium amber, hazy, with a small white head. Mild to moderate carbonation. Aroma of fresh, crisp green oily hops. Malts aren't prominent and it's not balanced, but I don't expect it to be for an IPA. Moderately strong floral bitterness with an odd chemical presence. Medium bodied. Odd off-taste that I can't quite place. A pretty generic stab at the style but falls short of the mark.

Cloudy and copper with gold highlights and a thin creamy head that recedes to a very thin film of bubbles. Syrupy fruit smell with a hint of hop.

Syrupy and caramel sweetness with plumb and grape notes. Abrasive but not overly powerful resinous hops finish up and leave a bitter aftertaste. Starts out biased towards the sweet malts, and as it warms the bitter hops developed to overcome. Moderate body is a tad to slick for refreshing, but very nice nonetheless.

Not bad, but I won't go out of my way for it.

12oz bottle received as an extra from a very generous trader - thank you, TheBlackMallard! 6.7% ABV, best before 16th May 2008. Chilled and poured into my Urthel tulip.

A: Deep crimson (surprisingly dark for an IPA) with a dense beige head that recedes slowly leaving a lot of lace. Plenty of carbonation and this one looks very appealing

S: Sweet with a lot of caramel. Hops are present as pine with a hint of floral character. There's also some fruitiness - plums and figs. Good but a little sweeter than I like my IPAs

T: Dark caramel sweetness forms the backbone of this IPA with a hint of pine hops coming through almost as an afterthought. Not incredibly hoppy by any means, almost unbalanced. This one's full bodied and is mildly bitter on the finish with a fair bit of sweetness

M: Soft, full and smooth - great stuff but again, a little over the top for on the body

D: Good but I'm not the biggest fan of this interpretation of the style

Pours highly carbonated with a orange/amber glow. Huge head dissipates slowly leaving a curtain of lace on the pint
Aroma is sweetened caramel with pine and citrus hop notes.
Flavor is decently balanced and nice mix of sweet and bitter. some grapfruit rind flavor comes out in the finish after a coating of sweet caramel.
Mouthfeel starts with a sugary sweetness that is then cut by some pine tar and finishes with a sweet citrus/grapefruit. Nice progression and transition of flavors that I would expect in an IPA.
Drinkability is good. Bottle probably doesn't do this justice.

Poured into a becker from the kegerator.

A: Dark golden hue. Pours a slight, foamy, white head. Settles quickly, but leaves a little of a blanket collecting around the rim. Some spotty, but nice spider web lacing.

S: Lavender, bubble gum, and hops.

T: Slightly hoppy, and bitter, and fresh flora with a slightly sweet indistinct flavor.

M: Steely, and bittersweet sticks with you throughout.

D: Not quite a session, due to the bitter and floral combo.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Nice head, and slight but distinct lacing. Nose is floral hoppy with a floral, hoppy, and lightly sweetened flavor. Overall this is a good quaff.

Presentation: 12 oz bottle with a shipping scene on the label. Brewed on and best by date both clearly visible. Also has a description of the beer.

Appearance: Pours bright orange with a large white head. Slight haze. Nice lacing.

Smell: Almost completely hops - mainly piney aroma.

Taste: Taste is dominated by hops as well. Starts out with some fruity flavors, and then leads to a very bitter finish.

Overall impression: Not bad, but a little light on the malt. A bigger backbone would make this one more drinkable.

Appears an orange with a lush thick, soapy white head. Lots of streaky lacing.
Smell is of citrusy hops, which are standing out above anything else.
Taste is of bitter citrus hops with some malt trying to come through but failing.
Mouthfeel is creamy but bitter with a heavy need for a sugary malt balance.

Pours a cool red/orange color, with a surprisingly dark head. Very good head retention and lacing.

Smell reminds me of sweaty socks, very buttery with just a hint of hop fruitiness.

Taste is all grassy hops, with a good malt backing. Lots of dry bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is good, very smooth and super creamy.

Drinkability is good, a solid, well balanced beer.

P.S.
Thanks to david131 for sharing his growler!

Well, here's a brew that tests the limits of the BA number scale of rating, in terms of how a brew fits into the description of its style, and perhaps how it reflects its regional roots. When I think American IPA style, I do not at all think of what I found in my Kuhnhenn bottle. But their IPA does have a couple of outstanding traits that make it worth tasting. It's just... well, let's just say that IPA fiends might be underwhelmed.

It's a cloudy brew that, interestibngly enough, is just about exactly the color of the bottle it came in. Okay, so maybe there's a touch more red in the ale. A vigorous pour yields an inviting solid yellow/tan head. The aroma is mid-sized and nicely balanced between floral and grain, without the screaming hop monster warning note.

The first starnge sensation was the unusually, dare I say it, watery mouthfeel. The carbonation promised in the head was simply not in the glass, making the brew Keystonesque in feel. Or maybe it's like hand-pumped stuff, that no-sparkle-to-the-carbonation thing. It does make it not very filling, and cetainly drinkable.

The malt lingers on the tongue alongside the hops. Hops were not nearly as assertive as I had expected. Is Michigan hop-sensitive?

First had: on tap at Rattle N Hum, NYC, NY

Hazy copper pour, bubbly carbonation feeding a small head that was nothing more than a ringlet after a minute or so. Aroma was a decent mix of pine/herbal hops and malt sweetness. The taste was pretty good, but also a little off. Pine and herbal hops, pale malt sweetness, and an underlying mineral taste...it wasn't too offensive, but did throw things off a bit. Medium body, a bit filmy, but overall, not too bad an IPA. I was just happy to see any Kuhnhenn beer on tap within my general realm.

Many thanks to beernut7 for this one of many...bottled in April '05...not super fresh, but still well within its prime.
Pours a very attractive clear amber color w/ a full two fingers of white head...a decent amount remains on top and some decent lacing is left behind.
Nice aromas filled w/ juicy fruit hops and sweet malt...no alcohol detected and very inviting.
Taste is enjoyable...a fairly hefty dose of hops, definitely taking the front seat on this offering. I would prefer a bit more malt to balance out the hops...the aftertaste is quite bitter and lingers a bit.
Mouthfeel is average and the carbonation is nice...another good beer from KBC and one more I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on. I would enjoy a few of these if given the opportunity.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with Pailhead (thanks!). Brewed on 04-04-05 and best before 07-04-05.

Poured a medium and cloudy amber color with virtually no head. Lighter aromas of mainly flowers with some light citrus. Tastes of flowers, sweet malts and light pine. Has a medium sweet to a lighter bitter balance.

growler filled locally yesterday enjoyed from a Kuhnhenn snifter. through the growler the beer has a nice almost amber hue. poured into the glass a mahogany color with a thin almost cream colored head. Rely looks like a barleywine. the nose however screams IPA. really fresh sticky pine cone like hops. flavor is a bit more multi than I expected but still a great ipa with a nice non offensive hopping. No dripa, but certainly a worthy beer. Hopheads might be a bit let down though as the caramel malt back bone shares the spot light with the hop.

A: Deep, dark, dull amber colored beer. Slightly hazy. Forms a small, but rather stable off white head. Leaves some very nice lacing.

S: Rather aromatic scent of pine and caramel with citrus fruit to a lesser extent.

T: Rather odd flavor. Malty. Caramel malts. A mild sweetness. Then pine and orange with a mild sweet/bitter finish.

M: Medium bodied with carbonation that is slightly lower than I would have expected it to be. Mild bitterness.

O: I've got mixed feelings about this one. On it's own, it's not overly impressive, with a kind of flat mouthfeel, high malts and deficient hops. However, I just so happened to pair this one with a cheese spread (Carr Valley Smoked Cheddar, Widmer 1 yr Cheddar, and Widmer 6 yr Cheddar) and the maltiness and low bitterness paired exceedingly well. In the end, I found this beer paired rather well with food, but was a bit lackluster on it's own.

S-Underwhelming, rather light on both hops and malt.

T-A solid malty sweetness starts things off with an earthy hop finish.

M-Medium bodied and crisp.

D-Nice, almost sessionable.

On tap at Gingerman in NYC on 8/6/12. Served in a tulip

Pour: Deep clear amber orange with two fingers of cream colored head. Leaves some pretty solid lacing.

Smell: Lots of pine, and some grapefruit and tangerine. An equally large portion of caramel sweetness comes out on the nose.

Taste: Really, really sweet caramel malts with a sticky pine bitterness. Some citrus and oranges. Too sweet.

Mouthfeel: Really sticky. Medium body.

Overall: Ok, but really too sweet. I feel like they aimed for balance and overshot with the malt bill.

A- Pours a sunset orange hue with a small, white head.

S- Very hoppy, some sweet fruits, similar to aldebaran with a bit more sweetness.

T- Strong malt up front, a bit of a strange, musky middle, followed by a quite bitter hoppiness.

M- Thick for an IPA with ample carbonation.

D- This is definitely an interesting IPA. While I can't see myself drinking more than one of these in a sitting I could definitely drink another one again. The lingering bitterness is pretty intense!

Bottles were bought straight from the brewpub with a brewed on data of 04/04/05 and enjoy by date of 07/04/05. This poured out a clear amber color with a very small head which bubbled away quickly. Not even a fairly hard pour stirred a head from either bottle I had. The feel wasn’t flat though when I was drinking it. Citric hop bitterness and light sweet caramel malt made up most of the aroma. Light piney notes were present as well. The hops and malt are also fairly balanced in the flavor. The edge is to the biting bitter hoppy finish that it has. Citric and floral hops blend over a bready sweet malt backbone. Nice solid flavor with that extra bitterness I like in my IPAs. The body was about medium with a smooth feel over the tongue. Easy drinking as well though not as good as the on tap version. The bottled seemed to lack something. Still a good IPA though.

Served on tap at Rattle N Hum in New York, NY

A: Pours a slightly hazy copper with a quarter finger tall off-white head. The head retention on this beer is very good and significant lacing is observed.

S: Lots of aromas of hops - primarily pine with some grapefruit.

T: Caramel malts, some grapefruit hops, and then a huge amount of pine hops.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Some crispness.

O: Really enjoyable and sessionable. Another quality beer from Kuhnhenn Brewing, I guess I should be expecting very good beers when I order theirs. I could easily drink these all afternoon or evening and not want for anything else. I really like the complexity in the flavor.

On-tap at Craft Beer Company in London, of all places. Amazed to find Kuhnhenn on tap across the ocean.

Sticky white lace on a caramel-coloured beer. Head leaves soon.

Caramel malt, with pine and resin in the nose.

Taste is quite balanced between malt and hops. Lots of caramel, along with a chunk of pine and some bright citrus, orange mainly. Malt is a bit too strong for the style, but still nice.

Medium bodied, low to moderate carbonation. Sticky.

Overall, pretty good. Not excellent, but a nice beer for sure.
