Notes: Made by our very own Todd Schwem, this Chocolate Stout was made with cocoa nips from Ghana and vanilla beans from Madagascar. It is quite rich, black in color and complex. It begins with intense chocolate and finishes with vanilla.

Served poured into a goblet from a 12oz bottle picked up at the release yesterday

Appearance- Thick, oily ebony. Like a dark espresso with only about a half inch of hot cocoa-looking head that didn't quite rise to the top of the glass. I had to shake up the last quarter of the bottle to even get this carbonation up. Aside from the lack of head, a great looking imperial milk stout.

Smell- Roasty cocoa and coffee, strong vanilla extract, sweet lactose tartness, a hint of allspice comes through as all of the aromas blend together. Perhaps this is the hop character poking through, as there is really no hop aroma to speak of. Overall, this has a nose of homemade hot chocolate spiked with a dash of cognac. Very nice. Again, a great representation of the style.

Taste- Big chocolate hit followed by malted milk, nutmeg, cinnamon. Very akin to a Mexican chocolate without the chilis. Not much coffee flavor given the coffee character in the nose. Faint corn sweetness (maybe the malt working in tandem with the lactose) creeps in leading to an added bonus- the aftertaste in your mouth tastes like you just ate a big bowl of cocoa puffs. This is awesome.

Mouthfeel- Smooth and creamy. As expected. As I mentioned in the appearance about the lack of noticeable carbonation- I find this to be normal in every kuhnhenn beer I have had. While in some styles I find it off-putting, I am perfectly fine with it here. Smooth and creamy from start to finish with very minimal bubbly interference. Just enough carbonation- perfect for an imperial milk stout, and helps the drinkability quite a bit.

Overall- I am not going to beat around the bush here, this beer is AMAZING. I did not expect to enjoy this beer as much as I do. That being said, I am super bummed that there was a 1-bottle limit on this when I picked it up. I may have to head back and get another. Everything works in harmony here to produce a great result. This may be my favorite kuhnhenn beer, and hope that some day I can get a bourbon barreled offering if they make one. I would love to try a draught pour. I love big stouts, but milk stouts are not usually my favorite style. This one breaks the mold and is definitely up there in the ranks for me now. A great breakfast style stout for sure. I would drink this any time.

Huge thanks to BigBadBarrel for this bottle!

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: black bodied beer with 1 finger of tan head. Drops down to a thin uneven cap.

Smell: milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, lactose note and mild roast.

Taste: mild to moderately sweet milk chocolates. Lactose note, a hint of nuttiness and roasty malts. Cocoa and vanilla notes add to the sweetness of milk chocolates. Finishes with a mildly bitter and dry cocoa note and the vanilla sweetness seems to linger and balance out the cocoa flavor. Really nice!

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low end of moderate carbonation. Silky and creamy mouthfeel. Ultra smooth beer that drinks like is 5% abv.

Overall: This milk stout is even a little more enjoyable than both Moo Hoo and Lugene; who are both big names in this beer style. This is probably my 2nd favorite Milk Stout that I have ever drank. Only Surly Four is better! Kuhnhenn another wonderful beer! Wish that this beer didnt have a single bottle limit this would be a great beer to add as a regular offering at Kuhnhenns. It really too bad this beer was such a limited offering, I would like to see more of this beer!

2013 bottle courtesy of wade5614 into a kuhnhenn tulip.

a - brew opened with a gushing, but there is a lot of carb. 30% pour of the tulip was filled to the brim with foamy head that seemed to just grown and grow and grow. i poured fairly carefully as well. none-the less, after a LONG time of settling and pouring and whatnot, i got a decent pour. black as night with the grey cream colored head that i already spoke about...which really dominated the beer and the pour.

s - nose is chocolate with some strong char.

t/m - the taste is where this one comes to life. like chocolate milk...smooth and silky and fairly soft. the carbonation shows itself in the mouth on the finish which is a bit harsh and overly charred.

o - overall, not a highlight for me from the kuhnhenn catalog, but far from a bad beer. if the carbonation was more under control, this one could've been a moo hoo killer, but alas the carbonation is intense making the foamy head overbearing at times. as always, glad to have tried it!
