Kuhnhenn TRIPAKuhnhenn TRIPA
BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Kuhnhenn Brewing Company
Michigan, United States
kbrewery.com

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.25%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The newest member of the DRIPA family, this is the next step up– a Triple Rice IPA. Brewed as a bigger, more intense version of DRIPA, yet still employing the same proprietary cereal mash method, lending to the dry snap at the finish. The aroma is ALL hops; big sticky, citrusy hops. A nice malt sweetness occurs throughout the taste, with cracker-crumb notes complemented by the same huge hop characters in the aroma. This extremely limited beer has only been brewed once, so get it before it’s gone.

This pours a clear golden honey color with some white head that quickly dissipates. The appearence looks thin, almost like a wine. The aroma on this beer is outstanding. Lots of citrus, a hint on pine, and some melon. A little bit of malt sweetness is there too on a big whiff. The taste starts nice and malty with hops quickly assaulting the palatte. A wide range of hop flavor is present, citrus, mango, pineapple, and melon. A little bit of a grassy/pine flavor. Bitterness is balanced well with the sweetness, and it finishes super dry. Good brew, but price point is a little off.

On tap at Kuhnhenn for Summer Solstice '13. TRIPA pours a deep amber and woody brown color, quite a few shades darker than DRIPA but sharing the same exceptional clarity. The stark white, foamy head reduces to a skin quickly and leaves some nice splotches of lacing along the top of the glass.

Without having them side by side, it might be hard to distinguish DRIPA and TRIPA from the aroma alone, at least right at first. TRIPA hits with a beautiful bouquet of citric hops; grapefruit, tangerine, lemons, and a solid heap of pine, resin, and herbal notes. What do you expect when you take an already great hop profile and just amp it up?

With some warming, TRIPA finally reveals it's darker and heavier malt backbone, first evidenced by the darker color. Bready malts, borderline caramel sweetness and a touch of alcohol warmth creep in and remind you that this beer is actually 11.25% ABV. I think DRIPA smells a little better, if only for the fact that the hops are slightly blunted by some of the malts in TRIPA.

And again, just like DRIPA, the taste contains a good assortment of fruit; mango, pineapple, grapefruit. TRIPA is certainly more bitter than DRIPA - the hops are pungent, oily, and downright dank; there's no denying that TRIPA is severely hopped up. The higher bitterness takes away from some of the pure flavors of the hops, but it isn't so strong as to be off-putting or difficult to drink.

TRIPA has a bunch of extra malt to compensate for the excessive hoppage; toasted bread, light toffee, and a substantial sweetness that really isn't found in DRIPA. However, the hops are still the relative "star" of the show, but there's no doubt that the back end is pretty sweet. TRIPA is pretty huge on the palate; thick, oily, smooth, and just a bit sticky. The finish is a bit bitter with some sweet malt and alcohol warmth.

One of the problems with "Triple" IPAs is that they tend to be far too sweet and heavy to enjoy, because extra malts are needed to balance the hops. So either you end up with something way too bitter or way too sweet. While I prefer DRIPA by a mile, TRIPA is still a good beer, and hats off to Kuhnhenn for finally making a "Triple IPA" that didn't scare me away. Much better than Double Crooked Tree or Devil Dancer.

Super clear, light lacing, yellow tinted amber colored. Actually quite surprised by the clarity. Smells of alcohol, peach and citrus. I expected more from the nose. Tastes much of the same way that it smells. Finishes clean and dry with an alcohol burn. Almost wine-like in how it drinks. Very low carbonation, and full-bodied. Good brew, but I think I would rather have a DRIPA.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - That is an ugly beer. Clear. Gray with a pinkish tint. Strange. Not much of a head.

Smell - Kind of a fruity aroma. Some hops. Some booze. Not much of a malt aroma beyond the fruitiness.

Taste - Hoppier here, but retains the fruitiness. Sweet. Tough to discern the hop flavor. Really strange flavor.

Mouthfeel - Light, but still sweet and boozy. Strange combo.

Overall - Just not digging it. I liked DRIPA, but this is too weird.
