12 Days of Christmas #11

Beer number 11 from Aldi Australia's 2023 Christmas Beer pack, courtesy of Kalea. I'm not doing these beers in order.

Vessel: 500ml pint can, poured into my IKEA tumbler. Best before, March 2025.

Appearance: A lovely orange, almost burnt orange appearance . Thick, slightly off 2-3 inch white head, Not completely filtered, some haze to the beer.

Aroma: Sweet malt and citrus. Sweet orange, tangerine, mixed with honey. There’s a strong wheat element to the beer too, with hints of candied banana. Smells inviting and sweet.v

Taste: Sweet malt mixed with that sweet citrus hop spice. Lovely hop spicyness to the beer. Not overly sweet, but it’s a smooth sweetness that compliments that spicy floral hop finish. A lovely balanced beer between malty sweet and spicy hops. It’s not overly bitter, but you do get a hint of alcohol at the back of the mouth.

Feel: Smooth, well carbonated and a medium mouthfeel, it’s a very easy drinker as ai keep going back to see that sweet, spicy hop finish.

Overall: An impressive and very solid beer. Probably my overall favourite of the pack so far, it’s smooth and drinkable, with just enough complication to make the beer that little more interesting than most. If I found a 6 pack of these I wouldn’t hesitate to pick them up.

Appearance: Amber Gold in color, brilliant clarity, pours an off white foam stand woth excellent retention.
Nose: baked bread crumb and toast, just a hint of digestive buscuit. Very low spicy and floral hop aroma. Otherwise a clean fermentation character.
Palate: moderate bread crumb with a medium toast and hint of caramel. Medium carbonation, medium alcohol, medium-low bitterness. Medium spicy-earthy hop flavor. Very balanced between malt and hops. Clean fermentation character, dry crisp finish that really rinses the palate readying another drink! Great quality, comes across as a low mineral content dortmunder exportbier.

day 19 of the beer advent calendar. poured from a 500mL can into a new glarus dimpled mug. pours burnt orange with a finger of firm white foam. sweet bread and earthy hops on the nose and taste. it has a nice malt sweetness up front that gives way to rye bread in the finish. the malt really leads the way on this one. full mouthfeel. malty and thick. this one is a little heftier at 5.6% and with its malty richness, was a perfect pour on a cold day.

500mL can stamped EXP 2025/03 poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 5.6% ABV. The beer pours bright light amber with light khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and patchy cap. Slight lacing. The aroma is mild with sweet pale malt and orchard fruit. The taste follows with semisweet pale malt and floral, grassy and fruity flavors. Mild trailing bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. There's a slight mineral note in the finish I'm unsure about, but it's not off-putting. Overall, good Dortmunder.

November 22nd, 2016 - Coming into the back half of the Kirkland German beer advent calendar is the Alpen Staff in a serious, even gothic looking black can. The amber beer throws up a little less than a finger's worth of head, and offers a somewhat anodyne grain smell. It's pleasant but unexciting. The flavor gives some more character, and projects some yeasty sweetness that is reminiscent of a golden ale, though more quenching and just a bit easier to drink.

Pours a pale bright golden with white head. Kinda has a sweet corn aroma. It tastes like a a helles, a very well rendition of one at that. This is what I expect when I drink a helles. Delicious and refreshing.

Pours amber with thin white head. Small amount of carbonation seen rising.

Aroma is sweet, malt, hay, grain. Some other things I can't quite place.

Taste is hay, honey, grain. Quite light flavors. Nothing much stands out. Not offensive but not inspiring.

Mouthfeel is medium/light. Somewhat lifeless on the tongue.

Overall, OK. Nothing more.

APPEARANCE: Clear amber, with a big head of off-white suds. Little lace.

NOSE: Sweet and caramel malty.

TASTE: Sweetly malty, with a hint of fruit on the palate before flatlining into a medicinal note. That kinda killed this one for me. A fair Dortmunder.

500ml can, stange, expires March 2024.

Crystal clear dark gold, copper maybe, with a satisfying large crema head.

Hearty bready malt, slight rich sweetness, very clean.

Chewy, substantial bread, a small amount of caramelization, moderate leafy hop bitterness. So clean and almost crisp.

It’s medium bodied with tight moderate carbonation. It’s quite full, yet light.

Not many export lagers around to compare to, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this one.
