Bottle sample at Mondiale 2010. Some roast aromas. Yes tehre is roasted barley, coffee taste. Lots of bubble head. Rather thin, better than average beer, although have had better coffee beers never mind RIS style. Could use more bulking up, complexity.

Brazilian´s are known to be big coffee lovers, but their major brands of beer don´t live up to their coffee. Here´s a microbrewery west of Rio de Janiero which has combined the two drinks in a stout, using Olinda Gourmet Coffee from western Bahia. Discounted 355 ml bottle from Costi Bebidas, on to the beer:

This is a lovely beer to look at. The black color with a glow of cola brown at the bottom of the chalice is common among stouts, but the creamy, whipped head topping hugging the glass, outstanding head retention that lasts until the last sip, and tons of lacing warrants a 5. It smells like a fresh cup of coffee. Very roasty and a little sweet. Mmmm. I can smell peppermint too.

Good things continue in the mouth. Coffee is pretty dominant, perhaps to be expected. There´s enough coffee bean present, but also enough stout to keep the coffee in check. Bitter chocolate and blackstrap molasses, plus a little smokey note. I´m also taking note of the creamer-like flavor, which along with the roasted coffee bean lingers on in the aftertaste. Very soft in the mouth with no harshness. The warming feel of alcohol is felt in the stomach.

Is this in the same class as Péché Mortel or Speedway Stout? No, it isn´t. But despite being 4 months past it´s date of validity, it is a pleasant coffee stout that´s worth hunting down.
