Took my in-laws here for New Year's, a free-standing place tucked away in the western burbs of Pittsburgh.

The vibe was very friendly & unpretentious, that of a no-frills, neighborhood Italian restaurant/grill. TVs around did not all have ESPN on, & for a Saturday evening the place was not too crowded (though it was in the single digits outside).

I'd checked out the beer list beforehand, & found it very respectable. Still surprised to see some surprises around (Dragon's Milk on tap, for one). I ordered an Orval, & my wife was happy to see Wexford on the menu. Maybe not the right glassware, but I'll forgive-ohs.

I asked the waitress about the "Beer Tour" posters hanging around -- apparently a club at the Pine in which, each month, patrons are invited to order each of 12 beers from the "Beer Tour" menu. Those who complete the tour by the end of the month get a free tasting & buffet. This sounded very cool, & I like it when places make beer appreciation interesting for their patrons.

The waitress (who was a little nervous but very sweet & attentive), brought out the specials on a tray. Three of us order the Pollo Italiano, a breaded chicken breast stuffed with portabella, provolone, & roasted pepper, served over risotto. Good stuff, & very substantial. Their menu varies from pub grub to some more entrees, but doesn't get too fancy. And very reasonably priced.

Upon gettin the check, the beer was a little more than I'd expected: my Orval was $9.50, closing in on Sharp Edge prices. The Wexford wasn't bad, so I'm guessing things there are priced in the "moderate-to-high" range with a few outliers. The food was definitely good value, though.

I'd wanted to try more beer, but was too stuffed to even think about it. All in all, I'm not sure that I'd go out of my way to hit the Pine again, but it's definitely a worthwhile stop if you're in the area. Nice atmosphere with good food, a place that knows their beer & is willing to take care of the customer. I'd be very happy to have it as my local go-to spot.

This is a nice quaint local bar that is in Kennedy Twp. on the main drag (Pine Hollow Road) across from the church. Probably a 5-10 minute drive from the insanity of the Robinson Twp. area.

Your typical local non-commercialized suburban Pittsburgh bar/restaurant. The restaurant section has two entrance doors and some booths and tables to be seated at with several TVs around with a different station on each. The bar area is actually quite impressive. Through double doors in the restaurant or through the patio on the outside the bar is a rather large horseshoe shaped bar.

It offers 22 beers on tap w/ 15 rotating taps dedicated to American craft beer- not too shabby for a local joint. On tap I've seen Allagash, Troegs, Victory, East End, Southern Tier, Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn, Founders, Clipper City, Southampton, Smuttynose, Rogue...etc. They also have about 75 craft bottles available. The prices are outstanding. I've paid as little as 3.50 for a pint of Mad elf and Brooklyn Black Chocolate. They also have pitcher specials when they are trying to kick a keg ($7 for a pitcher of East End Snow melt).

The servers are wonderful, friendly people. You'll find a variety of beer knowledge from knowing craft beer inside and out to not knowing the difference between good beer and BMC. The regular crowd is more BMC drinkers SO the Pine has monthly beer tours to better a quaint the public with better beer.

The food is excellent, though pretty typical for a bar/restaurant. They have a variety of well prepared greasy foods as well as nice dinner specials.

Overall this is a gem of a local find with great prices and a bar that I frequent (I do live in the area after all). It's really nice to see a local bar stick its neck out into the craft beer scene. If you are in the area, by all means this is definately worth a stop.

The Pine Restaurant hosted one of the meetings for the TRASH homebrew club this summer, which was my first introduction to the place. The place had just recently been taken over by new owners, who were making a concerted effort to connect with the craft beer world (hence pulling in my homebrew club).

The beer selection is pretty good, with about 8 beers on tap--mostly craft beer. They even have a craft beer special on wednesday's where ever bottle is available for 2.25. You can't beet that. Seriously. The selection trends toward some of the more accessible craft options, but that's probably not a bad thing

I actually made a point to head back out for dinner a few months later, and was rather pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The covered patio also makes for a great place to go for a summer night out.

For more detail, I gave them a full review on my blog...
