Cloudy light orange with thin ring of fizz for a head.

Smells of raspberry syrup, cranberry, sour cherry and hint of light malt- no hop smell.

Slightly sweet raspberry flavor with light pale malt background. The somewhat dry finish keeps it drinkable.

Light bodied feel with low, soft carbonation. This beer is a great ingredient for their vinaigrette dressing.

Why is it I feared tasting this beer for so many years? Is it the beer's iconic reputation for wimpiness? Is a pale ale infused with raspberries just not macho enough for my abundant and self-evident manliness?

Well, real men don't fear raspberries. That's what I told myself. So 23 years after Ruby first went online, I had a pint at The Spar Café in Olympia where it may or may not be brewed.

Ruby is a thin golden ale awash in raspberry flavor. I'm still not sure I want a beer as full of raspberries as this one is, especially a simple golden ale. (Perhaps a weizen or lambic.) But if for some chance I did want a raspberry golden ale, I suppose this one would fit the bill. Ruby boasts a bright, fruity abundance of raspberry aroma and taste. The berries are considerably enthusiastic, not an afterthought, and caused me no end of confused flashbacks to lost episodes spent at the International House of Pancakes.

The base beer holding Ruby afloat however is a watery golden ale all too eager to hide behind a raspberry or two. The beer does warm well and delivers rounded contours before long. But would this ale hold up sans fruit? Probably not.

Bottom line - I'm not a big fan of Ruby, but for what it is, it's not bad.

A: Very cool looking beer, poured a cloudy reddish/orange color, small head not much lacing down the glass
S: Smell is of wheat with good raspberry scent
T: Sweet raspberry taste, not sweet but slighly tart. Not like most fruit beers that I've had. Also tastes slightly yeasty and of wheat.
M: Smooth creamy, a little low on carbonation
D: Pretty good beer, very refreshing, good change of pace from NW IPA's that I had been drinking all trip.

Pours a one finger white head that fades quickly leaving no lace. Clear pink/amber color. Very light carbonation and light bodied. Raspberry nose. Starts sweet, clean raspberry flavor, some tartness at finish, good summer beer. $4.25 for a 22oz bottle from the brewery in Troutdale, Or.
