A really ugly pour...actually a slug of yeast (I hope) under the cap. Otherwise, a bit on the carbonated side, it took a while to pour.

Wasn't sure what to expect based on the description. The first taste was unimpressive and I was wondering what the big deal was about this. I think I figured it out eventually, and even though it did use barley (in addition to non gluten fermentables), it reminded me of Dock Street's Sudan Grass a gluten free beer. It had a similar sweetness and mouthfeel. It ended up being a refreshing beer, I could see wanting to try it again.

 

Poured a cloudy orange with a huge head on top of a standard, citrusy aroma as some wheat/yeast and a touch of spice that reminded me of a Japanaese rice ale for some reason. While somewhat true to the hefe style, this light and smooth beer is little too carbonated and spicey, as some of the citric notes and tropical fruit tastes seem to be muted on the finish with a sour spice edge. Worth a try but not the best hefe by any stretch.

A- pours a cloudy golden color with a fluffy white head. Retention isn't the greatest.

S- aromas of bubblegum, spicebox and very unique ceral grain considering what they put in this brew. Yeasty componet on the finish.

T- flavor follow the nose with bubblegum, spices and yeasty goodness. Nice full grain and malt flavor that is truely unique and very interesting. Getting notes of taffy on the finish.

MF- round mouthfeel with a medium body and soft carbonation.

D- very drinkable.

Overall a great little brew.

This beer is expensive, not much else to say about that. If you have the money by all means check this one out. The beer poured out as a cloudy looking golden color. The head was big and white, it leaves a trace of lacing down the glass. The smell of the beer smell like most Hefeweizen's. There is some wheat like grains on the nose and just a touch of some spice and soft fruit. The taste is pretty good but I feel that I've had better beers of this style. The mouthfeel was soft, gently carbonated and easy to drink. Overall I think this beer is good but the price tag kills it. I feel there are better Hefeweizen's out there for a cheaper price.

The description alone made me order this one... Nrewed by prisioners using tapioca, quinoa, amaranth and rice.

Immediately i knew I would have a hard time revewing this beer, as its quite unique. More herbed/spiced beer than hefe.

Pours a hazy golden blonde color, frothy white head, little retention. Scent is quite complex and hard to pin down - herbal, spicy, lightly medicinal with grassy and citrus notes. Taste follows nose, quite unique - acidity combines with the herbal and spiciness, earthy and grassy backbone. Tough to describe with accuracy as a lot of new flavors are present, but a great experience none the less.

With tapioca, quinoa, amaranto and basmati rice.
Orange, hazy appearance. Quite creamy and delicate head, cream colored.
In the smell the spicy notes prevail, with ginger, green pepper, and something else. With the strange things used to brew this one, it is a bit difficult to detect.
At the taste, aftert a delicate start, it rises up a tropical fruit sweetness, a bit too cloying. The starting spiciness doesn't last too long.
Average body, with a lightly peppery aftertaste, and then again sweetness.
Pculiar ingredients, and strange flavour. You have to like the sweetness.

Served in an Ayinger weizen glass.

Brewed by prisoners, eh? Why the hell aren't I committing crimes in Italy? Oh well... This guy pours a surprisingly clear orange straw with over a finger of white foam on top, which dies down to a surface froth. The nose comprises banana, bubblegum, cloves, orange zest, and cardamom. Yummy spicy fruit, baby. The taste has all of those elements, along with some orange peel and coriander, just 'cause those damn jailbirds wanted more in the flavor than the smell. Tsk tsk, I say. It still tastes pretty dern good, but still... The body is a very light medium, with moderately active carbonation and acrsip, refreshing, fruity finish. These prisoners made a very solid brew here.

I picked this up at Downeast beverage in Portland ME. Poured chilled from the bottle into a snifter.

A - A marigold color w/ whipped cream cap of off white w/ tight beading. The clarity is murky/unfiltered w/ rocky top and sticky lace clings

S -A sweet tropical odor -banana and pineapple w/ mild spiced notes, slight white grape and mild tart apple accents w/ gentle yeast esters

M - The feel is fully carbonated, spritzy effervescent and light bodied w/ a light tangy fruit tinge and mild toastiness. The feel comes off dry w/ light spiciness in the finish

T - I was not sure what to expect from the adjunct grains but the base weiss flavor has mild grainy tastes w/ gentle fruity yeast tanginess like kiwi or white grape and the flavor of rice seems evident slightly w/ light toasted and spiced edges. I enjoy the pineapple like accent even though it is mild and more tangy than sweet w/ spice notes balanced. The tropical essence goes well with the weiss quality w/ cereal sweetness and mild bitter notes

D - I found this to represent the style very well and it was an easy drinking wheat with a lot of interesting flavors from the quinoa, basmati, tapioca and yeast blending and adding complexity to the overall taste. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys German wheat beers.

Because hefeweizen is a favorite style of mine, and this Italian hefe was made with some oddball additions (such as tapioca), I had to try it. On to the beer:

Somewhat clody in the body of this blonde colored beer. Aroma: creamy banana, tapioca, great. No clove though, but that's not neccesary in this case. The taste follows the route of the aroma; bring on the banana and tapioca pudding. Oh, and then throw in a little balsalmic vinegar that somehow works well with the overall picture. Easy to drink too.

The standout for me of the 9 Italian beers I tried at Beachwood BBQ over the two days I went. It retains its hefeweizen roots while going in a direction inspried by creativity.

A: Pours a cloudy gold, with a light white head.

S: Flowers, banana, honey,

T: Bananas, Meyer lemon with a mild acidity. Rose petals and honeysuckle flower come in with some bitter earthy hops at the finish.

M: Spritzy, smooth, medium-bodied.

D: A nice surprise to kick off the Italian Beer Fest. Tasty, delicious, one to have again.

A: Cloudy golden color with a large white head that settles quickly to leave delicate lacing.
S: Aroma of sweaty gym clothes and thigh perspiration from Cuban virgins.
T: Flavor is a whirlwind of spices - anise, wet grass, in a slightly sour base and a red/malt vinegar finish.
M: Light body.
D: Very interesting, but I'm not sure I could drink more than one.

A - cloudy yellow, head is bubbly but doesn't linger

S - bright citrus, straw, yeast, banana esters, light malts

T - dominated up front by the light/sweet malts and the citrusy flavors. More of a green apple tartness (good call by the 1st reviewer) than your typical hefe's lemon/orange zest. Tangy and interesting without deviating too much from the style. Turns a little bitter at the end with darker malt notes. Nice.

M - light to medium body, good carbonic zing, even leaves a bit of a coat -- but without a bitter aftertaste.

D - very easy. don't be put off by the ingredient list, any fan of light European ales can enjoy this.

Nose of bananas and stone fruits and candi sugar with carmel and sweet toffee.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice carbonation and a rich quality feel. Nice creamy character while still remaining bright.

Flavors are pleasing green apple, hints of banana, pears and stone fruit. Hints of carmel/toffee and light sweet coffee. Initially seems fruity, sweet and simple but develops complexities and layers of flavor on the palate.

Finish is apple and pear with some hints of malt.
