Poured from a bottle into a snifter
very nice consistency extremely dark very light head almost none
smell: is heavy chocolate and oak not as much boozy as I would like and is reflected in the taste
Taste: heavy tones of chocolate and not much bourbon as I would like think it needed more time in the barrel before bottling
mouthfeel: is nice possible a little thin on the backside
overall: it is smooth and the flavors work i found it nice enjoyable to drink at the price I would have expected a little more and think will pass in the future

So, I've now had it on tap (@ Duckworth's in Charlotte) and from a bottle which was a pain in the ass to get (had to drive to Raleigh, NC.) I have to admit the beer isn't that wonderful from the bottle (it seems to lack certain characteristics) so I will be reviewing from my on-tap experience. Its very black in color with a medium reversed head that goes away fairly quickly. It smells of roasted flavors and some good stout coffee. Tastes of sweet roasted awesomeness, coffee, chocolate, and ester. Mouthfeel is thick and oily and awesome. Drinkability is high.

2013 vintage, cork and cage. Poured in a snifter, the beer is an opaque, blackish-brown coloring with a tall, dense, small bubbled, chunky head of a solid inch that doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Aromas of bitter roasted coffee, hints of campfire smoke, bittersweet chocolate, and woody characteristics. The nose just begs you to bundle up and sip this brew. Flavors are heavily roasted forward, with coffee bitterness followed quickly by the subtle charcoal and smoke of a fireplace/campfire. Creamy highlights, with bittersweet chocolate darting in and out of the palate, and the beer also has some charred wood notes. Very interesting, and very much tailor-made for cold weather and plenty of time to sip. Heavy and smooth in mouth, with a velvety feel as it clears your taste buds. The finish is smoky and bitter, with a coffee linger. Solid brew, very robust and rich, and damn tasty. Glad I snagged some of these to age a bit.

Poured into a Darkness snifter.

My 3oz pour is very black with a full two finger mocha colored head. The smell of bourbon creeps from my glass. Pretty powerful. I come back to it a second time after a gasp of air and I find a little vanilla trying to come through. Sipping time. Holy crap is this beer carbonated. Way too much. Distracting even. Getting past that I find some bakers chocolate up front accompanied by roast and char. Then of course the booze heat wave in the throat. This beer burns a touch. After the sip settles the aftertaste is rather awful. I wasn't a fan of this beer.

Thanks to n2185 for an excellent trade and the chance to try this one...

A - this is an excellent looking stout. I'd go so far to say it is a perfect example of the style. A fairly slow pour produces a frothy three finger cappuccino head. I had just received this in a trade, and when I took the bubble wrap off the shipping package the cork and cage blew off the bottle. I planned on cellaring it until next winter but so much for that! The beer itself is jet black and the lacing is great.

S - fairly malty with big notes of chocolate, coffee, and a whole bunch of smoke and oak. Bourbon not too noticed but you can tell without a doubt this is a barrel aged beer.

T - truly delicious....the barrel aging was done so well here. Bakers chocolate, coffee, molasses, and burnt toffee. Oak plays a big role and the profile of this beer suits the much more noticed bourbon very well. Hops sit well and finish is dry with heavy vanilla extract. Bakers chocolate aftertaste hangs around forever.

M - prickly carbonation with a fairly thin body. Despite being so light-bodied, it maintains a very good level of creaminess to it. Not too on par with the style but it works with this beer.

O - I really enjoyed this beer. This honestly may be the best looking stout I have ever tried. I think after trying this brew I will definitely be seeking more from mother earth. Very good job guys, highly recommended for stout lovers.

750 mL bottle into a snifter, split. Pours a dark brown with excellent head retention. The nose has mild bourbon notes, along with some light coffee notes. The taste is pretty much the same with coffee and chocolate at the front and bourbon at the finish. It also tastes a bit boozier than 9%. The mouthfeel is smooth but unremarkable. Overall I like this beer but would like stronger coffee and bourbon flavors when comparing to other beers of this style and price.

2011 vintage

Appearance--Black with a fine tan head. Head and lacing linger for a long while.

Smell--This bottle is very fresh, so the boozy, sweet bourbon which dominated the nose is what I expected. Underneath the bourbon there is a nice balance of milk chocolate and vanilla. Minimal roast on the nose.

Taste--For a BA stout bottled one month ago this is ridiculously smooth. Lots of sweet bourbon and chocolate up front. A little bit of earthy roast as well. The finish is a tiny bit boozy, but it's a good, complementary boozy finish. Very warming, perfect for the season.

Mouthfeel--Not as viscous as some big imperial stouts but very solid for the style.

Overall--A very good BA stout. Not on the level of Event Horizon, but still an awesome beer worth seeking out, especially if you are a fan of BA beers

750ml bottle poured into a CBS snifter.

A: Pours a dark black color with motor oil viscosity that develops a light tan head that recedes quickly.

S: Lots of malts and I sense some chocolate undertones as well as some coffee.Bourbon comes on at the end and I can smell some of the barrel that houses this magic beer.

T: Tastes like it smells. Lots of malts with some chocolate and coffee undertones, it finishes with the bourbon barrel aftertaste that balances out this brew perfectly.

M: Medium bodied with a slight oily texture on the palate.

O: I Really look forward to each Winter when I can indulge in this North Carolina masterpiece.
