Didn't have the "usual" Belgian flavor, and the sweetness of the first sip put me off a bit. However, the more I drank this one, the more it grew on me. The flavor absolutely delicious; coffee, chocolate, vanilla, almonds, and dark fruits. Abv totally hidden. I hate to sound sappy, but sitting in front of the fire, surrounded by the family, loved ones, and dogs a few days before Christmas, this was heaven in a bottle. I can definitely see buying more of this one in the future.

Thoroughly enjoyed from the 750 ml bottle in a snifter. This FINE strong ale pours a dark brown with mahogany highlights, a very nice head of khaki foam that dissipates to a thick ring, light layer, and excellent lacing. Nose of light coffee (!), cream, cinnamon, cocoa, and candy malts. Flavors blow out the nose with cola and dark roasted malts that fade in the middle to a light coffee touched by subtle cinnamon and chocolate. Back fades to a sweet Belgian candy malt and a warming booze note that is decently well hidden with a touch of fresh bread and cream. Excellent and complex. Perfect moderate carbonation, great mouth feel. Overall excellence from Belgium.

Cheers

750mL bottle into a tulip
Bottled on: 7/10/13

I bought this today, and it was just recently put on the floor of the beer store, so not sure how it was cellared over the last year plus.

A: Pours a very dark brown, nearly black, with some ruby hues when held to light. Just under 1.5 fingers width of tan colored head builds and then dissipates down fairly quickly, leaving only a few small patches of lacing. 4.25

S: Starts with coffee notes and cocoa, then lots of dark fruit like raisin and fig. Really surprised by how big the chocolate notes are. I bit of balancing booze. Not really what I was expecting but this smells fantastic. 4.5

T: Cocoa, anise, dark fruits, blond roast coffee, a bit of booze. Licorice and dark fruit lingers forever in the aftertaste. Wonderful. 4.5

M/D: Medium body, carbonation on the higher end but appropriate, ABV is well restrained and drinkability is very good for the style/alcohol content. It is a bit thin for such a big beer though. 4

O: Exceeded expectations. Loved it. If you are reading this, stop right now, and go out and buy one to enjoy yourself. Great beer. 4.5

Bottled on: 7/10/13.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is quite sweet with toasted malt, chocolate syrup, cocoa powder, and coffee with cream aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet coffee, espresso, cream, caramel, toffee, and slight chocolate syrup flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with great Starbucks coffee drink like qualities all around that I wasn't expecting from a Belgian beer of this style.

Serving type: bottle.

A- Attractive brown color with very nice lacing.
S- Starts out with some slightly burnt toast and coffee. After warming, turns more toward toffee and ground dried fruit.
T- Smoky, Toasty dried fruit and a bit of coffee. Nothing really jumps out but a nice blend of flavors. Alcohol of 11% is well hidden.
M- Lots of carbonation, maybe a bit too much and a bit watery for the style.
O- A tasty brew but not excellent like many of the others from this brewery. Would drink it again but I wouldn't seek it out.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/26/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, cocoa, toffee, toast, coffee, molasses, clove, pepper, raisin, prune, apple, brown bread, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great dark/bready malt complexity with light-moderate fruity/spicy yeast ester balance; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, cocoa, toffee, toast, coffee, molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, apple, clove, pepper, brown bread, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, molasses, licorice, clove, herbal, brown bread, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a great robust malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a slick, bready, and moderately creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong dark ale! All around great complexity and balance of robust dark/bready malts and liught-moderate fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured into a tulip.

A: Dark Amber, tan head disappears quickly.

S: It's like a nutty prune cake explosion.

T. A burned malt hits you from the get-go then you get a prune, fig, nugget and spice cake thing happening.

M: Quite a bit of carbonation, slightly creamy, not to much of an alcohol burn for a 11% er.

O: Of all the strong dark winter ales that I've tried this season, this one really offers a holiday dessert taste and aroma. This will sneak on you , so be careful; to late for me,though. Cheers!

Served chilled into a snifter.

Pours a beautiful walnut brown with half an inch of dark tan head that recedes leaving moderate surface layer and lacing.

Aromas of roasted nuts, toffee and cocoa.

A wonderful mix of flavors. Roasted nuts, toffee, cocoa, coffee. I even picked up hints of leather and tobacco. All present with none being overbearing.

Moderate body with moderate carbonation followed by a fairly dry, woody finish.

Very impressed with this beer. The only downside is I didn't pick up more bottles while it was around. Great winter warmer.
