375 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red/brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of lightly tart cherry, berry, raisin, plum, red grape, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light nuttiness, oak, hay, straw, herbal, light funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, oak, and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of lightly tart cherry, berry, raisin, plum, red grape, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light nuttiness, oak, hay, straw, herbal, light funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/acidic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, berry, raisin, plum, red grape, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, oak, hay, straw, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, oak, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness fro macidity as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth and lightly creamy/acidic/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is a very good Flanders brown ale. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, oak, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. A bit tame on complexity, but still showcases nice classic style character overall. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured into chalice.
L: Dark brown color, transparent with a weak white foam head.
S: Sweet red wine notes, caramel.
T: A little sourness, spicy, tart may be raspberry notes , but too ordinary.
F: Low carbonation, average body.
O: Interesting but not my kind of beer.

Bottle purchased at Drink Vanuxeem in Ploegsteert Belgium in May 2016. Cap on bottle said 20/10/2017.

Pours a clear mild brown color with very little head. What head did form dissipated in a few seconds.

Smells of fruit and vinegar, but very mild.

Tastes the same with a moderate acidity. Very pleasant on the tongue. Not as sour/tart as many other Oude Bruins.

Feels very smooth with just a slight carbonation. Low carbonation for a Belgian!

Overall very drinkable. I'd drink it again if I could find it easily.

Poured into a Goulden Carolus chalice on 5/5/16, bottled on 5/22/14. Beautiful rich dark brown malt color. Impressive grey brown head. Smells faintly of cider or raspberries, and rust. Crisp mellow tartness, very refreshing, good mouth feel, light yet not too thin.

MJ's "Great Beers of Belgium" calls the West Flanders shop Van Honesbrouck "prolific" and says it "has in the local style a beer called Bacchus: lightly toffees, with an almond nuttiness, and a spritzy raspberry-like tartness in the finish."
