I have always wondered in Portland why in the world Homebrew shops are often closed on Sundays. Simply don't get it. I want to brew on Sundays more than any other day of the week by far, and yet, Above the Rest and Steinbart are both closed. I'd heard good things about HBX, and figured I'd give them a go because, hey! They're open on Sundays!

Glad I did, since I'll be heading here for more often now that I have, and not just on Sundays, because the service has been excellent. Granted, the two times I've been in, I've been the only person there, and that has brought with it one-on-one attention and service that has been very welcomed. Good shop-talk from the employees that never is judgmental or jaded, just helpful and willing to give you honest opinions on their own product.

Their selection is good, not great, and the freshness of the hops makes me slightly leery if for no other reason than there never seems to be a ton of traffic, so turnover may be an issue. Still, yeast is always plenty lively, and a decent selection to boot.

I love to patronize businesses that give a crap that they have customers, and HBX has done that very well. If you don't mind spending just a couple bucks more on a total purchase over Steinbart, you may just find a new home for supplies. . . and not just on Sundays.

Just stopped in this afternoon for a packet of yeast. This little shop in No' Po' has friendly and helpful staff, reasonable prices, and apparently a rather large stock of base and specialty grains (as well as an array of supplies for non-beer fermentables). The yeast and hops cooler is right up front in the store, which is helpful if you're in a hurry or just stopping by for a missing bit or piece for a brew day. Best of all, they have weekend hours--for when all of a sudden it looks like a better day to brew than to bike (or for when your Sunday plan is to bottle up a batch, and you've already gotten everything set....and suddenly realized that you're out of crown caps).
