500ml bottle - so, just a 'red beer', then. But growling 'rotbier' is so much more fun! And how Germans sound when ordering some A&W!

This beer pours a clear, medium red-brick amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some beastly crocodile profile lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of semi-sweet, bready and doughy caramel malt, subtle biscuity toffee, a tinge of earthy yeastiness, mild dark orchard fruity notes, and some tame leafy, grassy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, lightly buttered biscuits, indistinct black stone fruit, and more rather understated leafy, weedy, and grassy verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite plain in its wan-seeming frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and more or less smooth, with a small clamminess slowly evolving as things warm up a tad. It finishes well off-dry, the malt really the only game left in town.

Overall, this is a pleasant enough, but at times underwhelming dark European-style lager, with a serious dearth of hop bitterness that might better balance it all. Kind of reminds me of the Canadian Amber Ale (or Lager), which don't exist on this site - innocuous, and often too sweet, which doesn't really make me want to polish the rest of this off, let alone procure another serving.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 3A). Bottle 50 cl @ Kaiserburg Nuremberg. AROMA: malty background with some straw notes. some floral hop notes present. APPEARANCE: ruby color with some orangeish highlights and hazy. white head with poor retention. TASTE: soft malty sweetness with some bready notes. medium bitterness with a semi-dry finish. PALATE: low body with medium-low carbonation. OVERALL: an interesting rotbier.
