This beer is a unique collaboration between two iconic Rhode Island companies. A custom blend of Narragansett’s bittersweet milk Stout with dark, delicious Autocrat Coffee makes for a delightful beer that is more Rhode Island than Roger Williams himself. Since the 1890’s, Narragansett Beer and Autocrat Coffee have been home-grown Rhode Island favorites.

Got in a BIF from ZebraCakez. 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 9/25/2014. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, cream, light char, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and coffee notes; with great strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, cream, light char, and roasted earthiness. Slight roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, cream, light char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good complexity and solid robustness of dark/roasted malt and coffee flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. There is a fair amount of dryness on the finish as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly creamy, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice coffee milk stout. All around good complexity and solid robustness of dark/roasted malt and coffee flavors; and very smooth to drink. This felt more like a dry stout, but was still nicely enjoyable.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear thick jet black in color with a light amount of fine visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and some very faint dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy dark mocha head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of roasted coffee beans and a light to moderate aroma of lightly roasted malts. Hints of milk sugar sweetness.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of lightly roasted malts with a light hint of milk sugar sweetness. That is overtaken by moderate to slightly stronger than moderate flavors of roasted coffee. Light amounts of bitterness in the finish which does not linger for too long.

M: Medium bodied with a moderate to heavy amount of carbonation. Smooth.

O: A very easy to drink and enjoyable coffee milk stout - and one that I had to get because of the nostalgia factor (I lived in Southern NE growing up and drank more than my fair share of Autocrat Coffee Milks). The coffee flavor is strong but still very enjoyable.

Narragansett Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout
16 oz. can, coded "3014 21:45 3"
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More #901, Tampa, FL

I have to admit that I was skeptical about this beer given the Narragansett name, but it totally delivers. It's rich with an authentic coffee flavor, as well as chocolate and caramel; and perfectly balanced without any flavors covering over others, or eventually building to take the lead. A moderate bitterness balances it, and it teeters between sweet and dry, but always with a pleasant roasted edge. Some might argue that there's not enough body or malt to it, but I feel that if it's got the flavor that you're looking for that's enough; it's a trade-off, more body and malt might be more satisfying, but less leaves it more drinkable. It finishes dry, and fairly short, with some coffee and dark chocolate lingering along with some very subtle hops. It's not complex, but it's rich.

16 oz cans in May 2016 and December 2017.
Pours clear very dark reddish-brown with a sizable, frothy tan head. Good retention.
Very promising aroma that's lightly sweet and has good balance between dark roasted grains and fine coffee with hints of chocolate. These linger on in the mildly bitter aftertaste.
Medium+ body and carbonation.

On-tap 1/7/2014 at Doherty’s Ale House, in Warwick, RI served in a tapered mug glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a large beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is all black toasted coffee beans and roasted malts.

T: The taste starts out with a smoky coffee bean flavor that is quickly followed by a hearty roasted malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly smoky.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is very dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, as the name implies it’s a strongly-flavored coffee beer and it’s a very good one.

Good beige head on the initial pour. Leaves some streaky but lasting lace. The brew is deep, dark brown where no light passes.

Definitive coffee (black) aroma. Attractive as it seems freshly ground. No other notable smells.

Imagine a 50-50 split of iced coffee with dark beer and this would be the likely result. There's little else to note--no cream, no hop and very little residual sugar. The body is thin with a decent level of carbonation. A good novelty.

Once more, we have a CAN courtesy of my local, in-person trader, tone77, who CAN show up on my porch whenever it is CANvenient for him. He brings such great beers and is outstanding about returning the empty CANs for further transfer to Jeff Lebo. Viva The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Made On Honor [-] Sold On Merit"; "A Rhode Island Tradition Since 1890";
"Hi-Neighbor!"; "When Autocrat was started in 1895, founder Frank O. Field was drawn to the word Autocrat, one who rules with undisputed sway. It was then that their most delicious flagship product, Autocrat Coffee, got its name. Throughout the 1900s, 'Gansett and Autocrat were the beverages of choice in New England. We present here our collaborative Coffee Milk Stout, a flavorful and smooth dark ale that pays homage to our shared heritage, while celebrating the art of craft brewing. A swallow will tell you!"

A swallow is likewise depicted on the CAN, but I have better things to CANsider, like Crack!ing it open and CANducting a Glug. The former was loud & the latter was inverted, leading to a pseudo-cascade and three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention. I watched in fascination as it slowly fell, leaving wonderful lacing in its wake. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing precisely ZERO light penetration. Nose was not sweet at all! It smelled of coffee, all right - espresso! Rich, smoky, bitter, just the way I like my coffee as a retired sailor. Milk?!? That is if you are having a hot (or warm) mocha milkshake! Me? I'm drinking coffee! Hot & black, just like my women. Ha! Mouthfeel was dense, thick & as if a dollop had been ladled onto my tongue. The taste was very bitter, very much like espresso, with a smoky, coffee-like bite. Milk/Sweet Stout? Hardly. This was more like coffee infused with alcohol, rather than vice versa. Man, it got me to sit up, my heart began racing and my attention was now fully engaged. Phew. It drank much bigger than its ABV would suggest. Finish was dry, bitter and very reminiscent of mess decks coffee. Forget 5-Hour Energy Drink, just have one of these with lunch and see what happens!
