Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is a unique collaboration between two iconic Rhode Island companies. A custom blend of Narragansett’s bittersweet milk Stout with dark, delicious Autocrat Coffee makes for a delightful beer that is more Rhode Island than Roger Williams himself. Since the 1890’s, Narragansett Beer and Autocrat Coffee have been home-grown Rhode Island favorites.

16 oz cans in May 2016 and December 2017.
Pours clear very dark reddish-brown with a sizable, frothy tan head. Good retention.
Very promising aroma that's lightly sweet and has good balance between dark roasted grains and fine coffee with hints of chocolate. These linger on in the mildly bitter aftertaste.
Medium+ body and carbonation.

Once more, we have a CAN courtesy of my local, in-person trader, tone77, who CAN show up on my porch whenever it is CANvenient for him. He brings such great beers and is outstanding about returning the empty CANs for further transfer to Jeff Lebo. Viva The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Made On Honor [-] Sold On Merit"; "A Rhode Island Tradition Since 1890";
"Hi-Neighbor!"; "When Autocrat was started in 1895, founder Frank O. Field was drawn to the word Autocrat, one who rules with undisputed sway. It was then that their most delicious flagship product, Autocrat Coffee, got its name. Throughout the 1900s, 'Gansett and Autocrat were the beverages of choice in New England. We present here our collaborative Coffee Milk Stout, a flavorful and smooth dark ale that pays homage to our shared heritage, while celebrating the art of craft brewing. A swallow will tell you!"

A swallow is likewise depicted on the CAN, but I have better things to CANsider, like Crack!ing it open and CANducting a Glug. The former was loud & the latter was inverted, leading to a pseudo-cascade and three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention. I watched in fascination as it slowly fell, leaving wonderful lacing in its wake. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing precisely ZERO light penetration. Nose was not sweet at all! It smelled of coffee, all right - espresso! Rich, smoky, bitter, just the way I like my coffee as a retired sailor. Milk?!? That is if you are having a hot (or warm) mocha milkshake! Me? I'm drinking coffee! Hot & black, just like my women. Ha! Mouthfeel was dense, thick & as if a dollop had been ladled onto my tongue. The taste was very bitter, very much like espresso, with a smoky, coffee-like bite. Milk/Sweet Stout? Hardly. This was more like coffee infused with alcohol, rather than vice versa. Man, it got me to sit up, my heart began racing and my attention was now fully engaged. Phew. It drank much bigger than its ABV would suggest. Finish was dry, bitter and very reminiscent of mess decks coffee. Forget 5-Hour Energy Drink, just have one of these with lunch and see what happens!

Poured into stout glass. It pours virtually black, with a thick, fluffy, cafe au lait-colored head and thick lacing. The smell features burnt coffee and tobacco smoke, like pouring coffee into an ashtray. The taste is very burnt: burnt coffee grounds, burnt tobacco, and just a hint of burnt caramel. There's nothing sweet about it. It's also fairly metallic. It's rather light for a stout - more like a porter, with moderate carbonation. For a stout, it's ABV is a relatively low 5.3%. For someone who likes really burnt tastes, this stout is perfect. To me, it's rather bland and could use some other tastes.

Pounder can into a pint glass.
A. Pitch black with a two finger foamy tan head thick lacing
S. Aroma Is roasted malt and slight hints of coffee and burnt caramel
T. Creamy and smooth but kinda metallic not enough coffee or sweet malt.
M. Incredibly chalky and kind of bitter dry lingering feel. Goes down easy enough but wash it down with something else.
O. Pretty decent but needs more coffee and sweetness

Jet black with a big fluffy tan head as all stouts should be.

Smells like coffee but not in the way most coffee beers do. This smells like coffee from a coffee maker in the break room. It doesn't have the chocolate or espresso notes that most coffee beers do. This smells like coffee grounds being loaded into my dad's coffee maker. I dig it.

Taste follows the nose in that the taste is heavily coffee-centric. Not getting much in the way of milk or chocolate. Tastes like roasted barley and an Americano. I really like this beer and it's making me rethink the role that Narragansett could play in my beer drinking life.

Mouth feel- creamy, thick, with slight carbonation.

I don't know if my rating is colored by my assumptions about Narragansett but this is a really good coffee stout that brings something unique to the table. T doesn't pack the sweetness of a normal milk stout and the coffee flavor us more Dunks than Starbucks but I really like it.

The smell was immediately familiar but I couldn't place it. Then I tasted it and it became clear. It's that gross smell/taste of pure liquid smoke, like when you spill it on your hand and it stains you for the rest of the day. Liquid smoke isn't all smoke, there are other gross flavors in it. This is that. Gross. Do not want.
