Del's ShandyDel's Shandy
Notes: A thirst quenching Summer classic, Narragansett Del's Shandy is a collaboration between two iconic Rhode Island brands. The first Del's Frozen Lemonade stand opened in RI in 1948 using an old family recipe brought over from Italy. Since then, both 'Gansett and Del's Lemonade have refreshed countless beachgoers around Rhode Island and beyond. The Del's Shandy brings all-natural lemon puree, our award-winning lager, and just a touch of sugar together for a shandy that tastes as refreshingly different as a New England Summer.

16oz can poured into a pint glass.

A: golden colored with a very light haze. Rocky, fine-bubbled white head retains well. Small dots of lacing.

S: Del's frozen lemonade on the nose. Perfect balance of lemony, sweet, and tart. Maybe some subtle grains pulling through.

T: Sugary/tart Del's iced lemonade. Some bready graininess underneath. Maybe a touch of hollow hops. That's about it.

M: Light bodied. Perhaps some wheaty froth? Fine-bubbled, scrubbing carbonation. Very refreshing.

O: This will sell like hotcakes. Narragansett has been very smart with this series of beers. An iconic New England brewery teaming up with other iconic and beloved New England brands. It amplifies the reach and recognition of their brand, especially because they are using soft drinks, which obviously have a broader demographic. Genius. The Autocrat coffee milk stout was a good idea, but this will outsell it by leaps and bounds. The liquid itself is extraordinarily simple, but that's exactly what it should be. It lets the Del's lead and it stays refreshing and crushable. That's all it needed to do; stay true to concept and don't eff it up. This is a gold mine.

People here in RI are going crazy for this, even to the extent of showing off on Facebook about buying cases of it. Once the hype dies down with this one, people will realize this isn't anything special. In fact, I prefer several other shandys (Leinenkugel, Porch Rocker, etc.) to this one and will have trouble finishing the 6-pack I purchased.

It does have a nice Del's aroma, but it's a little too tart for me and does have a bit of that Pledge-like flavor others have mentioned. I thought their Autocrat coffee stout collaboration was damn delicious, but this one misses the mark. I'm curious what their next callaboration will be. My suggestion - Tito's Cantina Mexican Lager.

Pours - Golden yellow thin white head that quickly dissipates, no lacing.

Smell - Lots of lemon and citrus, wheat and hay. Smells alot like lemonade.

Taste - Lemon as expected and citrus, little too sweet. Some wheat.

Taste - There is a slight after taste I dont really like but it is clean and crisp refreshing.

Overall - I am not a huge fan on this it is ok but I can see where this is a refreshing summer beverage.

16 oz can into a teku. Wha, 'Gansett now distributes to Maryland?

Appearance: Pours a clearish golden color. The head is two fingers high and white in shade. Very bubbly with poor retention, it doesn't have the best look, nor does it leave behind much (if any) lacing. (3)

Smell: Well, it's a shandy. To me, the lemonade dominates this - but, it's good lemonade. Maybe I get a touch of malt, but again, this smells more of lemonade than beer. (3)

Taste: Yep, lemonade with a faintly bready finish. It is what it is, y'all. Luckily, the lemonade part is good (read: not artificial or cloying), and the beer part balances with the former nicely. (3.25)

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly, this doesn't feel that cloying or sweet. It is, don't mistake me, it just isn't ridiculous. Carbonation helps it go down easily. (3)

Overall: It's always fun to try a shandy that isn't from Leinenkugel. This won't enter my regular rotation, but I'm damn glad to have tried it. (3)

3.1/5: Like I said: it is what it is

Easy easy drinking! Poured in an iced mug and tossed in some lemon slices. Not bad at all! This feels like summertime at the beach. No after taste and goes down too easy. Got a case for $15 and did not regret it.

Appearance: Yeah it's a Shandy so it looks like a shit pilsner. Half lemonade half beer is the appearance. Surprise!

Smell: like a light beer mixed with dels. Mind you this is different from a German Shandy. Dels has no comparison.

Taste: Ok so here's where I am mildly impressed. It's a Shandy. Yeah.. But it's blatantly dels lemonade in beer. Is the beer stand out. Lol no. It's the dels. It's not sweet by any means. I am actually enjoy this, and I am strictly a big Belgian kind of guy.

MMouthful carbonation is mild of the road. It's not club soda bubbles. But it's not high gravity low. It's sessionable body. Refreshing. A real beach goers body.

Overall: like the can says, sold on merit. There are going to be a lot of fan boys and girls here but at the same time. This is about reviewing a beer based on what it aimed to be. Not based on what you enjoy. You don't down vote a Shandy because it's not a barrel aged stout. This is a spot on dels meets light beer in the glorious amalgamation of exactly that. It's on target. And for that it's earned it's score in my book.

The can artwork is eye catching. This is not okay it is awful and close to undrinkable. This taste like there based beer lager with some lemon added to it. Im sorry but lemon and lagers don't mix well together folks. Anybody that thinks this makes for a pleasant tasting beer is a complete imbecile. Cheers! D
