Narragansett Cream AleNarragansett Cream Ale

Brewed by:
Narragansett Brewing Co.
Rhode Island, United States

Style: American Cream Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
‘Gansett Cream is made with quality ingredients like 2-row pale, Munich, Vienna, and Cara-malt for a creamy head! We used Columbus hops for bittering and a touch of Willamette hops for a slight hop aroma. Bright gold in color and brilliant in clarity, this session ale delivers an extra pop of hop bitterness found only in cream ales of the early 1900′s.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #64 (Apr 2012):

LOOK: Shiny gold, big head

SMELL: Clean, crackers, fresh-cooked cereal, herbal hop, mild nose

TASTE: Fresh, crisp, slick, grainy, cooked grain, hop bitterness, leafy, dried grass, hop oil, herbal; dry, grassy finish

A solid go, this shows more character than most versions that are true to this style. Balance and drinkability seem to be the prime directives here, both of which they nailed.

Appearance: one inch head, high carbonation, gold in color, clear

Smell: sugar and toasted malt

Taste: toasted malt, grain, and citrus hops

Mouthfeel: light bodied, high carbonation, nice mix of sweet and bitter

Overall: A nice and clean lager. Nothing mid blowing and complex, but solid. This is a beer I would not go out of my way for, but I would not turn down either.

Great creamy feel that they were going for. Unfortunately they forgot the rest in the process.

Had one of these out of a tall boy, as is 'Gansett protocol.

A - Light and bubbly like a lager, but with a rich creamy head. Golden with some nice lacing at the top.

S - Very subtle hops and stronger malt, however, with the same tinny finish of 'Gansett's lager.

T - Exactly how it smells - slightly hopped and malty. However, although the start and finish are almost imperceptibly different from the lager, the middle has a sweetness to it.

MF - Light bodied, but creamy in the middle. At the finish though, it fades really empty and has little to offer.

Overall, it is worth drinking if you like the lager and want something just a bit more complex. Other than that, I would pass.

Poured into a shaker pint glass and I don't usually review out of this piece of glassware, but somehow and maybe to me, I feel like the shaker pint glass may not get as much love as it used to, however, I advocate for this piece of glassware for this style, but that is another topic.
The appearance was a nice golden yellow color with a nice transparency about it. Carbonation could be seen rising at a fair pace. Just a cap of a little white foamy head. Barely any lace.
The aroma had a nice blend of sweet corn, grassy hops and biscuit.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side running through all of the prior mentioned aromas. Biscuity to grassy aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was sweet, smooth and creamy having a superb crushability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Finish was semi-creamy.
Overall, a fine cream ale showing it's ability to be as complex as it can be for the style while taking an ale yeast and lagering it. I prefer this beer this time of year.

Pours a slightly toasted straw color with a short wispy white head. The head settles into a sparse cap. Some random carbonation bubbles racing to the top.

The aroma is quite neutral, it doesn't smell like much at all. Good thing is there is no off aromas, but still doesn't smell like anything.

The taste is a of a light dry malt, cracker like. A smidge grassy and peppery from the hops and grainy. Very neutral but again no off flavors. Meh but easy to drink.

The feel is light and crisp. Slight bitterness keeps the grain sweetness in check. Easy drinking.

An american macro without the crap. No gross aftertaste, clean. It is boring.

Poured from the 16 ounce can into a perfect pint glass.

Pours golden light, active bubbles, good head of remaining foam. Chalky malty nose. Smooth lagery beer taste, citrus close. Creamy mouthfeel. Mild mannered, if not a touch sour. Good clean fun, though hardly remarkable.
