750 mL bottle split between two New Belgium snifters. Pours a medium-dark brown and settles pitch black in the glass. About 1/2 a finger of tan foam on top initially, which bubbled down to a spotty lacing after a couple minutes. Very nice nose on this beer. I get a fairly even field of sweet rum, vanilla, baker's chocolate, and molasses. I'm not the world's biggest rum fan, but this smells nice, though maybe a bit thin. Upon tasting, I am immediate met with a huge wall of choclatey, bittersweet rum and oak. Quite boozy and sharp on the palate, although very tasty. I'm not typical a fan of Breckenridge, but this thing definitely isn't lacking in the flavor department. Loads of vanilla shine through on the back end and through the finish, and by the time the aftertaste sets in, you've got a mouthfull of rum-soaked vanilla beans. In terms of feel, overall it's a little thin, but still very pleasant. It thickens up considerably once it meets the palate, but the finish is still a tiny bit underwhelming.

Overall, not bad at all. This beer would do very well with some age on it. As it is, it's still very good, albeit a little unbalanced. The rum in this guy is very strong, as is the vanilla. What's taking a back seat here is the choclatey, roasty malt notes and any coffee that might be present - the main traits I like about imperial porters. And while I do love how vanilla-forward this beer is, the rum refuses to be ignored. I'd love to have another bottle to age for about a year.

Bottle. Aged about 6 months. Pours a dark amber red that's opaque held to the light. Nice rich dark amber red. Full two fingers of brown tan head that lingered for a bit. Smells of dark fruit such as raisins or dates with slight notes of rum and vanilla. Taste is a little odd for a porter. Thin. Doesn't have that mouth feel of an imperial porter. Thinner. Sticky and gummy with sugar from raisins/dates. Hints of rum but not overpowering. Has this odd vinegar kick to it. Not sure I like that part. Little sour. I am use to imperial porters being sweet and boozy. This one hides the ABV well. Drink doesn't really improve over time if you let it sit either. Almost has a tanis like quality to a red wine. Reminds me a lot of bad or cheap Chilean red wine. I don't hate it. Just doesn't taste at all like I expected it to taste.

750ml
Caged/Corked

Poured into a chalice a very nice dark brown color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy one-finger tan head, which leaves some small islands and sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, with some pretty nice chocolate/toffee notes, vanilla, and a very nice touch of rum. The taste is very nice malty, with some chocolate/toffee notes, nice touch of vanilla, very nice rum hints, slight oakyness. Medium body, ABV hidden very well, nice little dry/bitter finish, a pretty complex brew. Overall, this one kinda surprised me, very nice brew. Recommended!

This pours an unappealing barely opaque brown. Thick head that quickly dissipates. Smells more like a quad. Very heavy on the dark fruits. The vanilla is a real nice boost to the character of the aroma. Some nice hints of the barrel. Kind of a dusty note to it. On the taste that run barrel really hits up front. More dark fruits. Even a slight sourness to it. Thinner mouthfeel. Overall, uh... This was an okay beer.

L: dark and opaque. A bit effervescent and when finished pouring had a 1/4" of retention.

N: strong rum, chocolate, vanilla and malt.

T: sweet malt, vanilla, rum, chocolate, syrupy, sugar cookies.

F: very thin almost watery for an imperial Porter in rum barrels.
