Brewed by:
Breckenridge Brewery
Colorado, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
471 is a small batch, limited edition ale that was created by our Brewmaster to separate the weak from the strong. 471 is a double IPA, that combines Pale, Munich, Caramel-30, Carapils and Torrified Wheat malts, with Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Fuggles hops. It has a big sweet mouthfeel, followed by more hoppiness than you've ever had at one time. Enjoy.

Caramel and bitterness blended perfectly. It's a bit sweeter than i usually like my beers, but it was perfectly fitted for this beer. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't crazy sweet as some reviews may have you think. But the sweetness did come through and it was amazing. It came through just as much as the bitterness did and to my surprise made an incredible beer. Color - deep golden.

I went to the Micro Festivus in Roanoke Virginia and hands down this was the best IPA. Perfect balance of malt and hops. Smooth on the tongue and and amazing after taste. If you have not had this you are missing out!

This is as close to perfect as you can get. Light spicy aroma with some good floral and citrus notes in there…who cares. This beer taste amazing. Smooth with a wonderful IPA bite at the end that doesn't overwhelm or is overdone. Very smooth and uber drinkable even with the higher ABV. Thank God, Superman, Captian Cave Man or whomever that Breckenridge made this.

Just to note... I can't get tired of this. On tap, 22oz bomber or 12oz bottle it is outstanding. The intoxicating aroma that is only matched by it's taste make this one #1.

Drank from a bottle poured into a goblet on 9/14/2012

A = Nice orangish color, slightly cloudy. Nice head with medium retention. Good lacing.

S = HOPS...love the smell. Reminds me of freshly crushed hops from the garden. Definitely a good balance with the malts too. Did I say I love the smell?

T = Nice IPA taste. Not as bitter as the Sierra Nevada 2x IPA I reviewed recently. Not sure I'd have any indication that it was 9.2% ABV if I didn't read it on the bottle (might be a good one to give to a friend while I drink something lighter - just to mess with him).

M = Nice creamy mouthfeel. Didn't even have to take another taste just to check. No lingering bitterness either.

O = Me likey. Hate paying $10 for a 4-pack, but you (usually) get what you pay for. Will come back to this one again!

Okay, this beer is now one of my reference IPA's. I would put this up there with any of them... Dogfish 90 minute, Stone IPA, Southern Tier 2X IPA.. etc. but this beer rises above these beers and is getting into Avery's Maharaja territory.. which is lofty company, in my opinion. This is a quality made product. I don't go in for the color and lacing details. It's all about Taste, Taste, Taste. This beer has that in spades.

It has an exceptional flavor range for an IPA. Citrus notes exceptionally well counterbalanced with toffee and caramel. Upfront taste is a bit bitter, after all it is an IPA, then a subtle reveal of all the taste layers of grapefruit and caramel, with a finish of some of the toffee and alcohol beautifully blended. Carbonation and mouth-feel are perfect.

This beer is a winner! Enthusiastically recommended. But hey, I'm just some guy in Ohio.

This is a very well rounded beer. It reminded me of a home brew recipe I once tried called (John 1981). One of my top recommendations since it has the perfect balance of hops (flavor and smell) with the other smooth flavors. Perfect beer for BBQ and pizza.

A lovely copper. crystal clear pour with a rich tan head. Very smooth mouth feel without a heavy alcohol presence in spite of the 9.2% ABV. A rich, hoppy taste and finish that is well balanced with a hint of sweetness. One of my absolute favorites.

A: Medium hazy dark amber with a good bit of head that lingered for a while.

S: So many hops, it's fantastic.

T: Again the hops here are fantastic, with a bit of spices on the sides and surprisingly the finish wasn't very dry at all, it was just very smooth.

M: Medium body, lots of carbonation and a smooth feel.

Overall I really enjoyed this beer. I would love to find some more of this and keep it stocked all the time.

Pours a light coppery color with a small head and great lacing. It smells of citrus and somewhat grapefruit like. Obviously full of hops.

The flavor is quite interesting--I expected something very bitter like a Dogfish Head 90 min, but instead, it is very pleasing to the tongue. I don't think I've ever had an IPA that was balanced this well. In fact, this can hurt you--it tastes of less alcohol than a 5% beer, yet it is 9.2! Wow. It just shows that a good balance makes the best beer. I get a bit of residual bitterness, but nothing like a typical IPA. This is an impressive IPA for sure!
The mouthfeel is pleasant, and the carbonation is slightly low. The drinkability is by far greater than any other IPA I've had to include the last one I brewed.
Seek out to buy this beer.

12oz bottle poured into a Fullers pint glass.

A: Pours a dark orange color with a finger white frothy head. Awesome lacing and lasting retention.

S: Floral hops just jump right out at you. Traces of tropical notes as well with grapefruit at the forefront.

T: Tastes just like it smell and the hops just attack the palate in a great way. Has a nice lasting bitter aftertaste that I just love.

M: Medium bodied with a very nice dry finish.

O: One of my favorite Double IPA's and a constant in my fridge when available in FL.

This beer poured a somewhat cloudy amber orange. The aroma was indicative of a twice hopped (or dry hopped) beer. The taste is slightly bitter but overall sweet and finishes well. This is a very drinkable beer. This beer reminded me very much of Charlie Papazian's John 1981 from his book Microbrewed Adventures.

Poured a beautiful amber-orange color, almost the shade of iced tea that has watered down slightly. Very thin head dissipates leaving very small spots of lace behind.
Aroma-Citrus hops to the max like a Simcoe bomb, piney, fruity. A constant presence that does not let up. Mouthfeel is tart at first with the hops dominating but the sweet pale malt flavor washes in and out, Maris Otter maybe? Then the citrus hops come barreling 'round the corner and hit you again like a grapefruit to the forehead-beautiful. This IPA flat out rules and is a serious delight to my senses. The hops are intense, yet meld with the malt to give just enough body to please. Aroma is still pungent to the last drop. This is hands down one of the best IPA's I've had all year. This and Bear Republic's Racer 5 are at the top of the list. I could quaff this as the alcohol was cleverly hidden and not really detectable on my palate. Excellent brew!

Watch out ladies, 471 double IPA will put hair on your chest. This is the best of the Breckenridge and one of the best domestic IPAs available. Super hoppy (almost as much as Dogfish 90 min). Will cleans the palet of almost anything. You could eat dog doo and drink this and you'd never know it!

A- Very creamy white two finger head that stays strong until half way through. It's still present halfway, but only about 1/4" thick. This beer laces extremely well, one of the best lacing beers I've had. I guess this is expected from all the alpha acid in the hops.

S- Very piney up front followed by earthy and citrus aromas giving way to a slight malt sweetness. You can smell this beer immediately upon opening, even a few feet away.

T- Wow, this beer is delicious. This beer gives you a slight burn to your lips followed by an intense piney hop sensation that fades for a second then hits you again with a very strong hop bitterness. It then fades into a mild citrus and earthy hop bitterness at the end of the sip. You have a very slight citrus hop and sweet malt flavor that lingers to the next sip. I'm surprised how complex the hop signature is and how it fades then hits you then fades while leaving almost no bitter aftertaste. It's begging you for another sip.

M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. The alcohol is entirely masked by the hop presence.

D- Highly drinkable for an IPA. You have a hop flavor that lingers at the end of the sip without the bitterness like most IPAs. It's just begging for another sip.

This is definitely the best Double IPA I've had so far. It has a very complex hop character that transitions beautifully.

Appearance: Golden orange color with two finger head that dissipates quickly. Has a little bit of lacings on the side of glass.

Smell: Strong citrus aroma. Hints of pineapple, grapefruit and bread/caramel malts.

Taste: Upfront it has pineapple and citrus notes. Middle has a little heat that lingers. Finishes with grapefruit/citrus flavors and slight sweet malt flavors.

Mouth feel: Nice carbonation. Smooth, medium body.

Overall: Great IPA. I’m going to try to pick up a few more bombers of this before it runs out at my store. Tasty brew!

Glassware: Bomber poured into snifter

I'm quite stoked with this beer, especially considering how much I dislike the regular line-up of Breckenridge beers. As a matter of fact, it is one of the best IPA's I've had the pleasure of drinking, whereas I've had other Breckenridge beers that were so horrible I didn't even think it was fair to review them.

The beer looks great. The color is beautiful. A great coppery amber color. Excellent clarity, though it seems to lack carbonation and head retention. Lacing is perfect, however.

The smell is awesome. Reminds me a lot of Three Floyd's Dreadnaught with the intense grapefruity hops aroma. Nice sticky sweet malt aroma to back it up, though the balance is spot on.

The taste is a lot like the smell, though a little more balanced than the Dreadnaught. Sweet up front with an intense fruity hops flavor. Excellent balance. The alcohol is completely undetectable. I can drink it like a 6% IPA, despite it being much stronger.

The body is full and sticky sweet. Amazing stuff. I would rate it much higher on the drinkability if it weren't so deceivingly light, thus it is very easy to drink too much too quickly. It hurts the next day.

Appearance - coppery pour, creamy head with a solid coat of lace on the glass.

Aroma - citrusy and piny, thick and fruitful. Smells great.

Taste - just how it smells. Sweet, citrusy, with a mid-palate of concentrated piny hops further intensified by alcohol. Turns bitter on the swallow, grapefruit and dry. Some slight sweetness returns at the finish.

Mouthfeel - heavy, very smooth and coating. Perfect for the style.

Drinkability - potent but tasty. Delicious beer, a high abv, but a special treat now and then.

Hazy golden orange with a short off-white head that dissipates quickly. Moderate carbonation.

Pineapple, papaya, apricot, grapefruit, caramel.

Balanced between the caramel malts and hops. Upfront has an acute pineapple note. Caramel picks up mid-palate along with bready notes, orange, mango, and citrus notes. Finishes with citrus/tropical noes with light notes of pine sap.

Medium bodied, crisp, dry and sticky.

This is a very good DIPA. One of the best that I have had. This beats Dogfish Head 90 Minute. Easy drinking at 9.2%

Serving: Bottle to Sam Adams PP.

Wow! I remember being at a beer festival in September of 2011, and seeing they had this being served. Of course by the time I got to the station, they had run out of it. I was saddened. It wasn't for another 3 months would it be that I finally let this beer flow over my lips. I loved it.

I enjoy this beer cold, in a frosty glass. It has a smooth feel in the mouth, easy to drink and at the end, it reminds you that it is still a kicking IPA. I like IPA's that punch you in the face with hops, and this one does this in a way that I say BRAVO! Very tasty beer.

A- Pours a rich copper with a nice creamy tan head that leaves a syrupy lacing around the rim of a tulip glass. A little cloudy with subtle carbonation.

S- Grapefruit, and orange zest! Lots of tangy hops aroma follow. Just a touch of sweet bready malt surrounded by citrus and piney hops. Lovin' It!!!

T- An explosion of flavor! Fresh squeezed grapefruit... tons of it! The bitter hops and the sweet malt really balance each other out! This is fantastic! I'm picking up so many flavors as it warms up!

M- The balance of bitter/sweet/and citrus is unreal! Like great toasted whole grain bread with orange marmalade... The tongue doesn't get overwhelmed by any one thing... perfect balance!

D- You don't even notice the alcohol... This would go great with sooo many foods! Sweet and sour chicken w/ pork fried rice... BBQ'd citrus shrimp and polenta... or a nice crisp salad with grilled chicken, grapefruit, and feta... easily drinkable... I gotta get more of this for sure!

Appearance: Pours a pale golden honey with a huge foamy white head that sticks around and leaves some great lacing on the pint glass.

Smell: I could smell this brew as soon as I cracked open the bottle. Big flowery, herbal hop aroma. Some malty/nutty notes in the background.

Taste: Huge hop attack right away, very herbal/grassy. Backing that is enough nutty maltiness to keep it relatively balanced. The alcohol comes in big-time at the end, but it works, I like it that way. Caramelly/sugary aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Super-smooth and perfectly carbonated. Not too heavy.

Drinkability: For a near-10% brew, this one sure goes down easy. Great mouthfeel and pleasant aftertaste.

This one comes from Cellar's in Roseville. Thanks for the tip, Christian! I will definitely be buying this one again!

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a dinner glass.

Appearance: Beer is a super-murky deep golden color with a distinct orange tint. Head is very rich, and though it recedes fairly quickly, it leaves a film on the surface of the beer which is silky in nature.

Smell: Rich, sweet frothy malt character up front, accented by pine- and citrus-flavored hops. Almost a vanilla-type smell as well. No detectable esters, VERY well hidden for a 9.2%. Awesome.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Beer is thick on the tongue. As the carbonation expands, there's a beautiful cornucopia of flavor that barrages the tongue. Grassy/citrus hop flavor, a touch of vanilla, toffee-like malt. Aftertaste is surprisingly mellow, and the beer rinses cleanly.

Overall: I paired this beer with spicy Mexican fare. Awesome taste, and very little discernible alcohol. One of the best beers I've tasted.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a pint glass. Minimal white frothy head. Burnt orange in color. Opaque with a multitude of tiny bubbles that look to be suspended in the beer. Very unusual.

Very complex tasting profile. Begins with a creamy mild hop taste that does not begin to reveal the high ABV of this beer. Builds quickly into the double IPA beer that is advertised with a wicked good back of mouth attack. Piney/citrus finish. Unique development of flavors while staying true to its IPA class.

On the take home scale I would say this lives up to the relative high price and ould be an excellent beer to share with someone who likes IPAs.

Excellent IPA! Opened this bottle at about 50 F. Poured a nice, foamy, frothy, fluffy, thick, cream to light tan colored head that quickly setted down a light cover with some islands of thicker suds and some lace. Color is a clear medium amber. Aroma is hops, malt, caramel, fruit, fresh baked rye bread. Flavor is similar with high points for the each of the charactersitics in different parts of the mouth. Body is superb - full yet slightly astringent and has significant alcohol warmth. Finish is like flavor and is long. Session beer, but for being careful as it tastes so good that I want a large draught, but know it'll kick my butt.
