Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
471 is a small batch, limited edition ale that was created by our Brewmaster to separate the weak from the strong. 471 is a double IPA, that combines Pale, Munich, Caramel-30, Carapils and Torrified Wheat malts, with Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Fuggles hops. It has a big sweet mouthfeel, followed by more hoppiness than you've ever had at one time. Enjoy.

Cloudy golden amber with yeast in suspension and a slight white head with some sticky lacing on a tulip glass.

Sweet malt and caramel with floral hops in the background.

Bitter grapefruit dominates from entry long into the finish and sticks with the palate.

Full body with a slick texture and yeasty granules. Carbonation is modest in the dry beer with alcohol slightly less than anticipated.

I had this once previously and thought better of it at that time. However, today, it is just another beer and perhaps past its prime.

A: golden amber with a brief head that left lotsa lace

S: pine and hop

T: clean hops, pine, some citrus - grapefruit in particular

M: crisp, sharp; clean touch of astringent bitterness to clean the palate

O: real good stuff; I have a weak sense of smell, so my biggest determinants of review are taste and feel, and this beer impressed on both accounts; looked like some of the pumpkin ales I had this past fall. Having been loving Shipyard's XXXX Imperial IPA and Dogfish Head's Burton Baton, I was looking for a kindred spirit, and I found it in this beer: not oaky/whiskey like Burton B, and more subdued citrus than the XXXX. Impressed! Cheers!
