471 Small Batch IPA471 Small Batch IPA

Brewed by:
Breckenridge Brewery
Colorado, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
471 is a small batch, limited edition ale that was created by our Brewmaster to separate the weak from the strong. 471 is a double IPA, that combines Pale, Munich, Caramel-30, Carapils and Torrified Wheat malts, with Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Fuggles hops. It has a big sweet mouthfeel, followed by more hoppiness than you've ever had at one time. Enjoy.

A: golden amber with a brief head that left lotsa lace

S: pine and hop

T: clean hops, pine, some citrus - grapefruit in particular

M: crisp, sharp; clean touch of astringent bitterness to clean the palate

O: real good stuff; I have a weak sense of smell, so my biggest determinants of review are taste and feel, and this beer impressed on both accounts; looked like some of the pumpkin ales I had this past fall. Having been loving Shipyard's XXXX Imperial IPA and Dogfish Head's Burton Baton, I was looking for a kindred spirit, and I found it in this beer: not oaky/whiskey like Burton B, and more subdued citrus than the XXXX. Impressed! Cheers!

12oz bottle. Pours a semi-murky brownish orange with a thin head. Lots of lacing. Aroma is of citrus and tropical fruits. Sweet and hoppy. Flavors of citrus, namely orange, and some bitter pine. A bit bready. Taste is sweet with a nice wallop of bitterness. Grapefruit flavor throughout. Resinous and piney towards the end. Dry mouthfeel. Not very boozey tasting for a 9.2 Abv. Overall this is a really good Imperial Ipa that is easy to drink. Worth seeking out.

Appearance: mostly clear amber. A nice stream of small bubbles rising. Very little head?
Smell: citrus and floral hints. Grapefruit. Pretty substantial malt backbone.
Taste: grapefruit up front. Malt comes in, then a bitter aftertaste.
Overall: another good dipa. Not great but tasty.

Breckenridge : 471 IPA

An IPA of sizable strength and fair price. Pours a light golden color with chill haze but otherwise good clarity. Sticky bubbly lace is left behind. Aroma of citrus-y floral hops and mild biscuity/bready malt notes as well.

In the flavor, a fairly easy drinking and mellow profile. Upfront, mild grapefruit, sticky hop resins, and solid bitterness. The malt body has a sugary/honeyed character, and some clean alcoholic esters are there as well. Pretty well balanced, though in the finish 471 leans on the sweet side. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and somewhat smooth. Overall, a pretty solid effort from Breckenridge.

Total Wine & More purchase – Goodyear, AZ
12oz with pint

A: Pours a clear and sort of dull straw amber color with a tight thin off-white cap of foam. Some quick dissipation and just a few splashes of lace.

S: Smells of deep evergreens with a touch of catty herbals. Some runs of bright lemony citrus. Sweet pale malt aromas and a touch of alcohol presence. Fruity notes really assert as the brew warms. Pretty nice nose actually.

T: Tastes of real bright zesty orange flavors. Bitter melon with some grassy herbals. Upper moderate bitterness. Touch of bready cracker perks towards the end and provides a sort of orange-blossom honey sweetness. Little bit of alcohol warmth but otherwise very well masked. Slight metallic notes. Hops are lingering and sticky-icky. This is good. Lots of orange rind character with a decent bready malt influence.

M: Smooth creamy texture at first. Medium body with more of a dry tannic finish to it. Slight oily linger form the hops.

D: Excited to find this one on my AZ trip. Not sure how old the bottle was but a nice DIPA overall with good balance between pale malts and fruity hops. Definite dry hopping here. Lots of orange citrus notes. Alcohol is well hidden. Very drinkable.

Would have again.
