Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
That's what makes our Avalanche amber ale such a treat. We blend pale and caramel malts — and just a kiss of bittering hops — to create a refreshing-but-flavorful, anytime beer. Aromas of pale grains, a semi-sweet middle and a clean-as-Colorado snow finish make this our best-selling beer.

A: Beers pours a very dark and clear orange body with a nice white head. Fair amount of head remains while drinking but almost no lacing.

S: The main smell here is of malt. Beer has a biscuity life smell. Not many other aromas present with the beer; hops nonexistent.

T: Similar to the nose the main taste is of the malt backbone. Lacking much of the usual amber spice profile, however. The tastes seem to have more in common with an average lager than an amber.

M: Beer has a light body but the overall mouthfeel is pretty bland. Beer is watery and thin and lacks much feel.

O: Poor example of the style. Beer seems to relate better to a typical lager.

I can't believe that I've never reviewed this old school beer, first brewed in 1988. No dating on the bottle.

Pours a clear amber, a finger of foam.

The smell has caramel malt, toasted malt with an interesting fruity character.

Caramel malt taste, light fruitiness, toasted malt, very light bitterness to temper the sweetness. Some grainy notes as well.

Medium body with medium carbonation.

Quite the tasty Amber. I should buy it more often.

Great anytime beer. Good smooth taste and not too heavy.

Average goodness. Not as syruppy or offensive as other ambers.

This is an average beer for the style. It pours a cloudy darker orange color, and the head dissipates rather quickly. There is some spotty lacing on the glass.

On tap. Impressed more by its wonderful softness than its flavour. But for malt-heads, this is a must try

Poured from a single-serve into a pub glass at a local bar in Breckenridge, so hopefully a freshie.

Pours somewhat thin and "light" in color for the style. Moderate head, very little lacing. The aromas are proper but muted. Toasted malts, biscuit, and hops can all be perceived, but they are muted. The flavors follow the same profile. There are "proper" toasted malt flavors, and there is a touch of hops to balance the brew, but overall, this is a fairly muted flavor profile. The mouthfeel is neutral---neither crisp nor cloying.

Overall, this is only a "decent" amber. If the only other choices on tap were the usual lineup of macros, it would easily win hands down, but placed alongside other offerings of the style, it's worthy of a solid "average" grade, but not much more. In short, ok, and worth a try, but little more.

Avalanche Ale | Breckenridge Brewery. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, the head is two fingers thick and off-white, with solid lacing, and a deep amber body.

Smells like light apricot with bold grains and full-bodied malts.

I taste a clean and refreshing version of the smell with fully caramelized malts.

Medium mouthfeel with mild carbonation.

I'll go ahead and rate Avalanche Ale | Breckenridge Brewery with a 4.25

From the older can, it pours a clear amber with a modest head, reducing to a thin layer with a robust ring. Some lacing as you enjoy it. Malt in the nose and mouth. Not bad!

Avalanche Ale brewed by Breckenridge Brewery, with an ABV of 4.40% However the bottle says 5.00% ABV . This American Amber/Red Ale pours out a copper color this a nice off white head. I really like the copper color of this brew. There is also a decent amount of lacing to this brew, it sicks to the side of the glass well. The smell is rich with sweetness. You pick up on roasted grians and malts. There are are also some nice milder hops in the smell of this brew. Between the look and smell this is one inviting brew. Now for the taste, it is bold but Smooth with flovors. You pick up on a nice amount of clean Roasted grains and malts. Avalanche Ale, also has a nice mild sweetness to it, this a nice added touch to this brew. There is a lot going on in Avalanche Ale , it has a super nice balance to it. There is nothing overpowering about this brew. The body of this brew is a soild medium. I like how smooth this brew goes down. The mouth feel is Bold, Clean Roasted, Smooth and Refreshing. Overall I'm giving Avalanche Ale , a 4.50 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again givin the chance to. Breckenridge Brewery, did a super nice job with this brew.
