Notes / Commercial Description:
It's a bold, smooth-bodied concoction that oozes dark-roasted coffee aromas and flavors of espresso and semi-sweet chocolate. We round out these heady pleasures with a dose of flaked oatmeal for a creamy body and a semi-dry finish. Unforgettable.

Poured into a tulip glass because it's what I had clean.

Its a nice dark black with a solid tan head. Typical stout. I don't get a ton of smell from it but my neighbor was smoking a lot across from me so take the smell with a grain of salt as I couldnt smell much of it even with the tulip glass.

As for the body; it feels heavy, but too carbonated for such a thick mouthfeel. Maybe its because I just got through a nitro kick but its not as smooth as I hoped.

Taste. Here is the real kicker; it wasn't very sweet. It had a lot of roast flavour and a strong bitter finish. But I feel like the sweet oatmeal was lost behind all of the roast. Overall I probably wouldn't buy this again. Drinkable but there is much better out there!

A- dark brown near black, 2 finger fluffy, float like head, great retent, thin film lacing

S- sweet, oats, lightly roasted, chocolate

T- lightly roasted dark chocolate flavors throughout, nutty, bitter burnt malt finish w/ a touch of sweetness from the oats, flavor hits you all at first, then slowly unrolls

M- light body, smooth, somewhat creamy, carbonation action at finish, lingering after

D- drinkable and flavorful, complex oatmeal stout, well worth a try, best of all, its sessionable

Poured into a St. Arnold's tasting glass thanks to texasclimber for sharing this one.

Appearance: Pours a jet black with reddish hues when held up to the light. Topped off by a fluffy off white head that fades into a ring around the glass.

Aroma: Roasted notes with coffee and chocolate.

Taste: Chocolate dominates the flavors but is complimented with hints of coffee and roasted grain, essentially the same as the aroma.

Mouthfeel: Fully and creamy body with low to medium carbonation and a sweet finish.

Overall: It wasn't bad, I've had better oatmeal stouts, but it was enjoyable. I don't think I would seek it out.

look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Opaque black with a tan head that fizzled away rather quickly but leaves some lacing.

Aroma: Like most american stouts of lower abv it gives off a sweet aroma without being too robust. Some hints of coffee and just a smooth smell overall.

Taste: There's not a whole lot going on here but what is there is good. The oatmeal has definitely done it's job in making this a smooth brew. Light bitterness of black coffee in the aftertaste and a sort of bland malt-forward stout taste fills the rest of the flavor profile. It's a very simple flavor but enjoyable with a nice creamy quality.

Mouthfeel: Gave this a vigorous pour so it's super smooth and highly drinkable. Light side of medium bodied.

Final Thoughts: If this was on nitro-tap I'd prefer it to a Guinness just for the oatmeal quality. While it's not the best of the style it's definitely a good beer. I applaud any beer that can achieve this level of enjoyment while retaining an abv under 5%.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout.

A: Dark brown/black with two-finger, tan, creamy head that lasted a few minutes. Nice lacing.

S: Chocolate and coffee. Roasted malt. Not that strong.

T: Moderate sweetness and moderate bitterness. Roasted espresso and chocolate notes. Hint of hops too.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Smooth but not too creamy.

O: The taste and mouthfeel were a bit of a letdown, but this isn't a bad Oatmeal stout. I did like the Rogue much more.

I poured this into my tulip glass. There was minimal head on this very dark body. You won't be able to see any light through this one.

Off the top of this beer I get a healthy dose of coffee and tobacco. I also get a decent burnt smell from the roast in the grain.

The flavor falls off pretty quickly. It tastes like a very simple cup of coffee. I don't get anything else other than that. On the end you get that bitterness that a cup of coffee would bring.

This is a decent oatmeal stout. It is really like coffee with alcohol in the flavoring. It is less like beer, and more like the cold coffee.

12 oz bottle pours our a deep black color. A good 3 finger head. It smelled of coffee. The taste had hints of coffee, malt and naturally a little oatmeal taste. It had a very dry mouthfeel. It was fairly heavy but drinkable. I had several over the weekend and enjoyed them all.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass

A: Very dark, opaque brown, bordering on black with the faintest of red tinge around the edges. There is a tan, foamy head of two fingers which dissipates quickly and leaves some relatively heavy lacing.

S: Smells darks and malty, with roasted coffee and chocolate flavors.

T: The taste of dark chocolate is prominent. Coffee and an earthy flavor constitute the rest of the flavor, with a mild but bitter aftertaste.

M: Creamy and smooth but a little watery.

O: Mediocre. Drinkable but there are much better stouts out there.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into my pint glass. This beer pours a very dark brown color with a brown head about 1/3 inch when poured. Eventually settles to a nice medium sized ring and decent surface coating of foam. Good lacing. Aromas of sweet, roasted malt, coffee and oatmeal, along with some bittering hops and also a hint of vanilla. Roasted coffee and oats along with the sweet malt and vanilla flavors are all present upfront, followed by a bit of bitter chocolate and a hop presence. Nice balance of flavors. Has a crisp, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. easy to drink in the way good beer is meant to be. Not the best oatmeal stout I have ever had, but not shabby at all either.

I reviewed this brew a couple of months ago but did not review it on BA. Review is from notes!

Reviewed 6-11-10
Reviewed cold from a bottle to a glass

A - 1 finger of foam which dissipated quick to a decent lacing ring. Poured a dark brew, couldn't tell if there was any carbonation

S - Sweet malts, caramel, oatmeal and vanilla and dark chocolate

T/M - Medium bodied brew with dark malts, oatmeal, hop bitterness at finish and hints of vanilla

D - Pretty drinkable oatmeal stout, medium bodied, nice hop bitterness at the end but smoothed over pretty easy. A brew I would drink again and recommend it!
